No Buts

Summary:

A short comfort fic of reader helping Miles come out to her family as trans

(Not really an X miles fic but can be read as that)

Work Text:

Miles’s hand was shaking where you held it tight. Her whole body was like a live wire, twisted and hung tight yet still managing to wobble and twitch around. Her body was coated in sweat, her powerfully expressive eyes were wide and already tearing up.

Before either of you could knock on the door, you took your free hand and cupped her face, making her look at you. No words needed to be said as she took in how calm and collected you were, the exact opiate of herself. She copied you as you took a deep breath in, holding it for several seconds before releasing in a blowing motion. You gave his cheek one final squeeze before dropping your hand and gesturing to the door with your head.

Shakily, she put in her key and entered.

The pu had yet to meet Rio or Jefferson, but you had heard so much about them it felt like you’d known them your whole life. Both parents were home, cleaning up their dinner together.

Rio’s voice carried through the hallway as she walked down to greet her son, “Miles, bebé! I didn’t know you were coming by-oh! Hello! Who might you be?”

At his wife’s words, Jefferson came out as well, towelling his hands off with a tea towel.

You smiled at both of them, waving to them both as you took your shoes off to leave at the door, “Hello Mrs Morales! I apologise for showing up unannounced like this! Hello to you too Mr Morales!”

Rip looked both surprised and overjoyed at your words, not-so subtly whispering to her husband about how you didn’t use first names. “You’re fine! You’re fine! Any friend of Miles is a friend of ours. Unless you’re more than friends…?”

Miles blushed bright at this and groaned in annoyance, “stop saying that!”

Jefferson laughs at his ‘sons’ pouting, “haha! She means no harm. What brings you two by anyhow? We just finished dinner but we might have some leftovers?”

Miles promptly froze at this, the usual joy of seeing her parents pausing her panic long enough for her to forget why you were both there. You knew this would be hard, it was something you went through yourself, but Miles family loved him more than they loved anything, most likely including each other. You knew she would be okay, had checked up through some semi illegal background checking to see they both accepted queer people even if they were much more low key about it all. That was most likely due to them not being queer themselves though, but once they knew they had a daughter…

You got the first bullet for Miles, “Actually, Miles has something to talk to you two about. Miles is a bit nervous, so I’m here to help give a little push and support so it’s easier. Could we maybe sit down?”

“Of course!”

Both parents spoke at the same time as they led you into the living room. You knew they were worried for their baby, the distance she had put between them had to be scaring them at this point. It was heartwarming to see how happy they were to have their child wanting to speak with them again.

They sat down on one couch while you and Miles sat on the opening one, Miles once again jittery as she fiddled with her baggy jumper. She was refusing to look at them, instead looking down as tears already began to build up and pour over.

Rio noticed instantly, “Miles, what’s going on? Talk to us, honey.”

Jefferson added on quickly, “whatever you have to tell us, we’re here to listen and we’ll love you no matter what.”

You noticed that he was also clearly fighting a more emotional reaction but ignored it out of respect for his privacy.

Miles sniffled as her mum spoke again, “you’ll always be my little man, Miles.”

You looked at him once again and grabbed his hand, chasing him to look at you. You smiled at him and gave a nod, “No ‘buts’.”

She nodded and took a deep breath before shakily starting to talk, “I, um… I don’t. No, no-I. Ah, fuck… I’m not you little… man.”

Another pause.

Both parents were about to speak but another squeeze to her hand gave Miles the strength to continue, “girl. I’m you little girl. As in, I’m not a boy or a guy or whatever! I’m… a… I’m sorry, I’m so sorry! Please don’t hate me!

Now that it was out and that she had started crying, she couldn’t stop. She hunched over shelf and sobbed loudly, asking them to forgive her and promising them they didn’t do anything wrong.

As much as you didn’t want to, you let go of her hand as her parents both rose from their spot. You watched as they both embraced their daughter and squeezed her tight, kissing her hair and whispering sweet nothings such as ‘oh my sweet baby, it’s alright, of course we still love you!’ And ‘I’m so proud of you, we love you so much’.

Miles cling to her parents bodies like he was a drift at sea and they were the lifeboat keeping him afloat.

You left the room as all three Morales’s starting to cry and comfort each other, going to the kitchen and sitting at the counter to give the family space.

After a few minutes you heard laughing coming from the other room, but chose to stay out until they were happy for you to invade in their little moment.

As the three of them came out and into the kitchen, you turned around only to be put in a crushing hug from Jefferson. You were stunned at first but quickly hugged back, smiling softly as you heard his voice full of gratitude speak, “thank you.”

No more words were needed, not as you looked up and saw Rio side-hugging her daughter and smiling at you.

Pulling away you gave them both a big smile, “Nah, I just gave her a push, she's just that good.”

Both laughed at that, voicing agreements.

Opening your arms up, Miles charged at you to give you a hug, knocking you into the counter and causing you both to stumble. You both laughed, hers more sniffly than your own, and separated from one another. “Not to be that guy but… told you so.”

Miles smacked your shoulder teasingly, “yeah, yeah, I know. “No buts” and all that.”

Jefferson laughed, “I think we’re missing something here?”

Realising how odd that may have sounded, you were quick to explain, “When Miles came to be about being trans, I explained how you two love her. She kept saying ‘I know but’ and I kept telling her there are no buts! When you love someone, especially your own child, there are no buts or what ifs to that love. It’s always there. She just needs to remind herself of that every now and again, Mr Morales.”

Rio and Jefferson both perked up at this, both running off a lot of ‘no’s in a they what confused both you and Miles.

Rio pulled you into yet another hug, “for what you did for my baby b-girl, you can call us by our first names whenever you like!”

You couldn’t help the way to teared up and quickly hugged her back even tighter, Jefferson joining you while bringing Miles in too.

As the four of you embraced, Miles felt a weight trickle off her shoulders and melt into the ground. The warmth of her family surrounded her like a shield, keeping all danger and agony out and all the love and hope within. She let her tears fall, her hands stop shaking and peace flood her bones. But before she could collapse and let the mental exhaustion…

“So, any chance you guys thought of a name for me if I was a girl?”
