Work Text:

Tony woke up in a cold sweat.

Fuck.

He looked over at his alarm clock sitting on his nightstand, seeing that it was almost midnight.

Why would he wake up in the middle of the night like he just did?

He wasn’t sure why, but he was overcome with a random urge.

He wanted to bake a cake .

Tony made his way out of his bed, trying not to disturb Pepper. He wouldn’t want her to wake up at midnight like he did.

He made his way to the mansion’s kitchen in order to ease his urge. It was quite funny, because he had actually never baked before, so this would likely end up disastrous. Despite that, he knew some of the important ingredients of a cake, so it would probably not be that bad.

Once he arrived at the kitchen, he grabbed the flour, eggs, butter, sugar, and milk. He at least knew you needed those basic ingredients to make a cake. He also decided to grab some lemon extract for some extra flavor.

Now it was time for the fun part: putting together the cake.

Tony first put together the flour, sugar, and butter. He tried mixing it together, however the butter was solid, so obviously he wouldn’t be able to mix it with the flour and sugar.

He realized he had a problem and his solution was to melt the butter in the microwave. So, he took the butter out of the mixing bowl and put it into a microwave-safe cup and put it into the microwave for 20 seconds. Thankfully, once it was done in the microwave it was liquified enough to mix in.

Once his solid mix was created, he made his liquid mix with the milk, eggs, and lemon extract. He was sure he was doing the right thing, but it smelled awful.

After he mixed the liquid ingredients, he combined the solid and wet mixes together. It looked alright, but now he was starting to doubt himself. What if the cake turned out terribly?

He put his worries aside and put the batter into a pan and put the pan into the oven. For a moment, he wondered how long he should bake the cake. He decided that 30 minutes should be enough.

While the cake was baking, Tony started to feel lightheaded in the kitchen, so he decided to sit in the living room and wait for the cake to finish baking. It was probably the heat of the oven that got to him that made him lightheaded.

He then realized that he was drifting off to sleep again.

Wait, what about the cake?

When Tony woke up, he realized that Pepper was standing right in front of his spot on the couch where he was sitting.

“Tony, why did you bake a cake?” she asked.

“I don’t know, I just felt the urge to.”

“Are you low?”

Fuck. Tony didn’t even think to check his blood sugar. He probably was low.

He shrugged and Pepper sighed. Tony went to the bedroom and grabbed his glucometer to check his sugar. He put a test strip into the machine and pricked his finger with the needle and put his finger onto the strip. The glucometer beeped and showed the results.

49 mg/dL.

Oops. He was super low. It was probably because he forgot to eat a snack before he went to bed. Pepper’s probably pissed right now.

He came to the kitchen where his silly cake was waiting for him on the counter. Pepper was waiting for him there too.

“How low were you?” Pepper asked.

“49.”

“You forgot to eat a snack, didn’t you?”

Tony nodded, and Pepper sighed again.

“Maybe that’s why you had the urge to make the cake,” she suggested.

“Yeah, probably.”

Pepper cut both of them a piece of the cake and Tony tried it.

“Yup, I can’t bake a cake.”

“Tony, it can’t be that bad,” Pepper replied

Pepper then tried her piece of cake.

“Oh my goodness, how much lemon extract did you put in here?”

“Just about half a bottle, why?”

“You’re only supposed to put a bit in there!”

“Well, how was I supposed to know?”

Pepper sighed again.

“I’m going to teach you how to bake a cake, Tony.”

Notes:

Fun fact I actually spilled a whole bottle of lemon extract in my kitchen once when I was 10 so that's why I added the lemon extract thing.
