Work Text:
Y/N hated Peter B. Parker of Earth-616B. She hated his carefree and unserious nature, even if they were looking danger in the eye. On the missions she had the displeasure of working with him, he’d effortlessly and endlessly aggravate her.
Peter also hated Y/N. He viewed her as too serious, always acting as if they were going to die in two seconds if things didn’t go exactly to plan.
However, Y/N would rather deal with an annoyance for a few hours every now and again than complain to Miguel about it. He already had enough on his plate, he didn’t need to worry himself over two co-workers who couldn’t get along.
Y/N’s downfall stemmed from one of her soft spots: children.
“Y/N!” She was walking alone through a corridor when she heard her name being called from behind her, accompanied with hurried footsteps. She exhaled, recognising Peter’s voice in a second.
“What?” Y/N turned to him, and raised an eyebrow at his expression. She’d never seen him look so excited around her.
“MJ’s pregnant! I’m gonna be a dad!” He cheered, throwing his arms around her neck and pulling her close. She stumbled, her eyes widening at the news and the sudden embrace. Her arms cautiously rose to rest on his back, returning the hug with less enthusiasm.
“Congratulations, Peter.” She spoke softly, a smile breaking out on her face. Even if they didn’t like each other, Y/N truly felt happy for him.
After that day, their passing glares turned into smiles. Backhanded statements turned into questions and answers about how MJ and the baby were doing. Their detestment for each other turned into an unlikely friendship.
Miguel couldn’t complain, he could now send the two on missions together without fearing that only one would return.
Their bond only grew upon the birth of May ‘Mayday’ Parker.
Peter once again ran up to Y/N, waving his phone madly in the air. Y/N barely had time to react before his arm was slung around her shoulder, pulling her close so she could see each picture Peter had taken of his newborn baby.
She gasped, looking at each picture with a child-like amazement glittering in her eyes. “Oh, Peter! She’s beautiful!” Y/N gushed over the pictures alongside Peter.
“Once they’re out of the hospital, you should come visit May and MJ! She already knows a lot about you, and would love to meet you!”
“If MJ’s alright with it, I’d love to!” Y/N agreed without hesitation, smiling widely up at him. Within the hour, it was arranged- she’d visit their dimension the next week.
Y/N arrived at their house with a basketful of gifts for both baby and mother. Peter led her up to the nursery where MJ was holding May. She looked tired, but happy. Y/N and MJ easily introduced themselves, and became fast friends.
“Do you want to hold her?” MJ asked, and Y/N nodded enthusiastically. In minutes, she was grinning down at the redhead baby. She took no notice of Peter taking a countless amount of pictures.
Eventually, Y/N needed to leave. “If you need anything , I’m just a phone call and a portal away!” She reassured with a smile, waving as she left the room. Once she was safely back in her dimension, Y/N opened her phone to see a load of photos sent from Peter. With permission, she had a new lock screen.
Over the months, Y/N was used as a babysitter every few weeks. For the most part, it was so that Peter could settle an argument with MJ. Sometimes, she’d be left with the baby without a word of warning. A small nursery had been set up for May’s spontaneous stays, and Y/N made sure to keep everything fully stocked.
MJ had begun to drift apart from her family, spending less and less time with her daughter and husband. More than once, May had been dropped off so Peter could go looking for her.
This instance wasn’t any different.
It was close to midnight as Y/N laid awake in bed, listening to the soothing sound of rain hitting her bedroom window. Just as she was about to fall into unconsciousness, she was startled wide awake by knocking on her front door.
She groaned in annoyance, attempting to block the noise with a pillow over her ears. It didn’t work.
After a few minutes of listening to the persistent knocking, she sighed and clambered out of bed. She shrugged on a dressing gown over her pyjamas before trudging down the stairs, rubbing her eyes.
“Alright, alright, I’m coming!” She called to the door, hoping to end the knocking. Thankfully, it worked. She opened the door and stopped short upon seeing Peter and May. He was holding his coat over her in a way that protected her from the rain while he got soaked.
“Y/N…” Peter said her name with such sadness that she was rendered speechless, and could only assume that MJ had disappeared again. Y/N quickly checked both of their wrists to be sure they had their watches on.
“Do you need me to look after her?” He nodded his head in defeat, handing May over. Y/N quickly bought her inside so she wouldn’t get wet. Peter pulled on the wet green coat, offering no comfort from the relentless rain.
“I’ll be back for her in the morning.” Her heart broke at the exhaustion in his voice, and she nodded.
“Let me know when you’re home.” She spoke softly, frowning as she held May tight against her body. “Come on, let’s get you to sleep.” Y/N smiled at the child, walking back up the stairs as the portal Peter created illuminated the street in an orange glow.
It was four hours later when Y/N was woken again - this time because of a phone call. She rushed to answer it, hoping May wouldn’t wake up. “Peter? Is everything okay?”
“Can I come over?” was Peter’s wavering reply. He was outside in minutes. Y/N, expecting him this time, waited by the open door. He looked so tired as he walked forward into her embrace.
She walked him to the living room once the door was closed. “Talk to me, Pete.” She kept her voice calm and quiet, hoping to smooth his emotional turmoil as she held his hands.
“She’s gone. Left for good.” Peter’s voice kept breaking as he spoke. “I found her in a club on top of another man, then she started screaming as soon as she saw me.” The first tear fell, and after that they were unstoppable.
Y/N moved closer to wrap her arms tightly around his neck. He sobbed into her shoulder, shaking in her embrace as he continued to explain.
He spoke about how she called him a bad husband and father yet still gave him full custody of May, about how she admitted she’d been cheating for the better part of two months, and how he’d need to find a new place to live.
However, he did leave out some details.
Such as how MJ said he should just run away with Y/N if he was so miserable.
“I can’t raise May alone, Y/N.” He fiddled with his wedding ring he’d just taken off, trying to ignore the world. Y/N’s hold on Peter only tightened.
“I promise, as long as I’m alive you’ll never be alone. I’ll help you with everything, we’ll give May the best life imaginable.” She spoke confidently, leaving no room for doubt. He clung to her like a lifeline, chanting ‘thank you’ over and over through the tears still streaming down his face.
As she promised, Y/N was there for Peter and May. The birthdays, Christmases, school events, everything. She was right by their side.
“Ma!” Y/N smiled widely as she turned around upon hearing May running from behind her. She caught her daughter in her arms and twirled her around a few times, making her giggle madly. “Can we see uncle Miggy?”
“Of course we can, sweetheart!” Y/N walked her towards Miguel’s office, and set her on the floor once they were in his hallway. As May ran towards the office, Y/N yelped as she was pulled by the waist into her husband’s arms.
“Pete, you scared me!” She laughed out as Peter spun her around to face him before peppering kisses on her face.
“Hey princess, how was your day?” He spoke quietly into her ear.
“It was good. I missed you, though.” Y/N smiled as she kissed both of Peter’s cheeks before his lips.
Let’s just say they weren’t allowed on missions together again.
