Work Text:

As the vibrant fireworks burst in the night sky above the stadium, painting it with a brilliant array of colors, the atmosphere in the Dodgers' dugout was electric. The team had just secured a thrilling victory against the Baltimore Orioles, and being that it was the 4th of July, 2016, stadium guests were being treated to a dazzling display of patriotic pyrotechnics—but of course, the players were welcome to enjoy them, too. Now, with their eyes fixed on the spectacle, the Dodgers basked in the glory of their achievement.

Amidst the exhilaration, Clayton Kershaw and Joc Pederson noticed a subtle change in Chris Taylor's demeanor. The spectrum of colors cascading above—shades of red, white, and especially blue—reflected in Chris's wide, blue eyes, and judging by the look in them, he seemed a bit more introspective than usual. They glanced at each other, concern etched on their faces.

Kersh, ever the empathetic leader, spoke up. "Hey, Chris, you seem a little lost in thought. Is everything alright?"

Noticing their focus on him, Chris met his teammates' eyes. He took a deep breath, then returned his gaze to the fireworks. "Yeah, I'm fine, guys. It's just... these fireworks bring back memories. Memories of past Independence Days spent with my family."

Curiosity piqued, Joc leaned forward. "Tell us more, Chris. What were those celebrations like?"

A wistful smile tugged at the corners of Chris's lips as he reminisced. "You see, Fourth of July was always a massive celebration for my family. It was like our own version of Christmas in the middle of summer. We would gather at my grandparents' house, fire up the grill, play games out in the yard, and enjoy each other's company under the open sky. Those days were pure magic."

Kersh and Joc exchanged knowing glances, realizing that Chris's nostalgic yearning had brought forth a longing for family traditions. They empathized with his longing, having built their own bonds within the close-knit Dodgers team.

Kersh placed a hand on Chris's shoulder, his voice warm and reassuring. "We get it, Chris. Family traditions hold a special place in our hearts. But you're part of our Dodger family now, and we're here for you."

Joc nodded, his voice filled with genuine camaraderie. "Absolutely, Chris. We may not be your blood family, but we're your baseball family. And we can create our own traditions, right here, right now."

Chris's eyes met theirs, gratitude shimmering within them. He realized he had found a second family, a support system he could lean on during both victories and nostalgic moments. The Dodgers had embraced him wholeheartedly since his arrival that season, and now they were extending their unity beyond the field.

As the fireworks continued to paint the sky with dazzling colors, Chris felt a renewed sense of belonging. He realized that the bond he had formed with Kersh, Joc, Kiké, and the rest of the team could transcend the game of baseball. They would forge their own traditions, celebrate victories, and find solace in each other's presence.

With a resolute smile, Chris turned back to his teammates, his eyes alight with newfound determination. "You're right, guys. We have our own family right here. Let's make new memories together, Dodger-style, and cherish them for years to come."

As the fireworks illuminated the night sky with vibrant bursts of color on July 4, 2023, the Dodgers celebrated another triumphant victory. The energy in the dugout was contagious, and the players were reveling in the festive atmosphere. Amidst the celebration, Clayton Kershaw and Chris Taylor couldn't help but notice a hint of wistfulness in rookie James Outman's eyes.

Sitting closer to James, Chris leaned over and asked, "Hey, James, you seem a little lost in thought. Is everything alright?"

James blinked, momentarily taken aback. He admired Chris and Kersh, looking up to them as seasoned veterans on the team. After a brief pause, he nodded and replied, "Yeah, I'm fine. Just feeling a bit nostalgic for old times with my family on the Fourth of July."

Chris smiled. He turned to Kersh, their eyes meeting, and they shared a knowing look. Talk about deja vu.

The memories of the conversation they had all those seasons ago—they couldn't even remember how many years it was—came flooding back, echoing in their minds.

Kersh's voice held a comforting tone as he spoke, "We understand, James. Family traditions and memories can have a powerful effect on us, especially on days like today. It's important to cherish those moments."

Chris chimed in, his blue eyes shining with empathy. "Absolutely. We all have our own stories and connections to this holiday. But remember, you're part of our Dodger family now. We're here for you, just like we were for each other."

James felt a surge of warmth as their words sank in. He was new to the team, a rookie navigating the exhilarating world of Major League Baseball. But in that moment, he realized he had joined a team that not only played together but also cared deeply for one another.

A grateful smile spread across James' face, his eyes reflecting a newfound sense of belonging. "Thank you, guys. I appreciate it. It means a lot to have this support and camaraderie."

The three players sat in the dugout, their gaze fixed upon the radiant fireworks display, as memories of the past intertwined with the present. Chris and Kersh marveled at the synchronicity of the moment, recognizing the beautiful cycle of camaraderie and support that had been passed down through the years.

As the fireworks continued to light up the sky, James felt a renewed sense of connection, knowing that he was not alone. He had found a second family within the Dodgers, a team that embraced him wholeheartedly and offered unwavering support.

In that shared moment, under the brilliant display of red, white, and blue, the Dodgers exemplified the true spirit of unity and friendship. They had come together, just as they had in years past, to create their own tapestry of memories and traditions.

As the echoes of fireworks filled the air, the Dodgers knew that this was more than just a game. They were a family, bound by shared experiences, and ready to continue their journey together.
