Work Text:

Piko had always been nervous. He got nervous before tests and nervous when a waiter got his order wrong. He was nervous that his hair might not look right before he left for school and got nervous when he had to give a speech. But most of all, he got nervous when he was with Flower.

When Piko was with Flower he got more nervous than he ever was public speaking or before a test. She made him feel a different kind of nervous.

When Piko was with Flower he felt a ‘butterflies in his stomach’ kind of nervous. A nervousness that… wasn’t necessarily unpleasant. He may have felt nervous around her, but it didn’t make him want to avoid her the way he did when he was nervous about anything else. He wanted to hold her close and never let her go.

Piko now had a new list of things that made him nervous. Piko was nervous when Flower smiled at him. When she held his hand. When she asked him to hang out. When he heard her laughter. Piko was nervous when anything had to do with her.

Piko began to get more confident as time progressed. Little steps here and there. He began being the one to invite her to hang out or being the one to shyly reach out his hand and intwine it with hers.

If you asked Piko what moment in time he was most nervous, you might expect him to say that time he had accidentally left his important assignment at home or that time he was forced to give a speech in front of the whole school, but you’d be wrong. The time Piko was most nervous was the day Flower had left a note in his shoe locker and asked him to meet her in the courtyard after school.

The note had been decorated in little hearts and he felt his heart beat out of his chest. He’d been surprised when she wasn’t sitting with their usual friends at lunch, and he hadn’t managed to catch her in the halls either. So, the day rolled on, the nervousness piling up, until finally the last bell rang and Piko could feel his heart pounding in his ears as he packed up his things as slowly as possible.

When he finally came to that corner of the courtyard, she was waiting for him, a big smile on her face, and his heart leapt with nervousness. He almost felt like he was shaking.

While he’d been expecting a confession, he didn’t expect her bashful looks or flushed cheeks as she said it. Flower was never a nervous person, and in that instance she looked even more nervous than he was. When she had finished, he felt all the nervousness of that day melt into determination as he cupped her face and leaned in for a kiss, which she happily returned.

“I’ll take that as a yes.” Flower had said.

He’d nodded.

With Flower by his side, he felt less nervous and more confident in himself. Sure she still made his heart beat in his ears and the butterflies in his belly swirl, but he knew there was no reason to be nervous around her. She loved him, and so did he.
