Sigh. Here we go...
As they went from ride to ride, Kaveh had started to regret the decision he'd made several days ago.
There's no turning back, is there?
Just how could he have the heart to reject Ajax when Ajax asked him to 'hang out' with big doe eyes? Well. On the positive side, this counts as a date, sort of... While comforting himself about the height of the next ride Ajax had pointed out, he'd lost Ajax again. Looking around, he figured Ajax would be just wondering about. Finally, he spotted that messy bright orange hair in the crowd, it wasn't so hard. Just as he was about to call out Ajax's name, it was almost as if he was swept off his feet.
Ajax seems to be watching an amusement park worker make rolled ice cream. And, well, Kaveh was watching Ajax.
That’s when Kaveh started studying Ajax the way an artist would study another artist’s work. As the ‘date’ went on, Kaveh noticed the way Ajax’s eyes would glimmer everytime he was excited about something, the way Ajax’s lips wouldn’t get dry no matter how harsh the ride was, the way Ajax’s hair rests so perfectly and pleasantly after a tough ride.
“What’s wrong? You’ve been so quiet today…” Ajax had asked, but Kaveh was just so lost in the way his lips moved when he spoke. “Kaveh??”
Startled, Kaveh was at a loss for words over everything about Ajax, “Oh, yes? Sorry…”
The ray of sunshine laughs, and Kaveh regrets ever regretting agreeing to this ‘hang out’, “it’s fine, you just looked so… Lost.”
Lost in the way you laugh so differently, unlike other people laughing, you laugh with a little chuckle, you laugh with graciousness.
“Ah… Did I? Sorry, again… I didn’t mean to upset you or anything like that,” and so Kaveh responds, pretending like he’s so sane and normal when it comes to Ajax.
And, oh, that smile. It makes Kaveh feel like his only purpose of existence is so that smile always remains on Ajax’s bewitching cute little face.
“Well, I was just saying that it’s getting dark,” Ajax was like a painting someone spent years perfecting. Every brushstroke led to that soft shade of blue, the color of his eyes. And if Kaveh knew the painter, he would thank them over and over again. Or, perhaps, Ajax was like a story someone spent years writing. Every word made up the oh so soft and tender rosy light pink, the color that flushes into his cheeks when he gets embarrassed. Maybe, Ajax was like a song someone put their entire heart into singing. Every note resulted in the way Ajax’s hair falls into places like dominoes, the way it’s messy, but tidy in a way Kaveh wished he could study. “Kaveh? Um, I was saying… We should probably do one more ride and go home after that, is that okay with you?”
Kaveh wanted to say no. It’s not okay, he wanted to stay with Ajax, forever and ever.
“That’s alright! Let’s go, then,” Kaveh wished he had more time, more time to study Ajax the way a writer would admire great pieces of literature. “But, Ajax, please no more scary rides…”
It hurt Kaveh to see that smile disappear, but he has to admit, that playful frown doesn’t look bad on Ajax either.
“Aww, I’d wanted to go on that one with three loops…” just as Kaveh was about to take it back, Ajax spoke again. “But it’s okay, I also wanted to go to that one with the dinosaurs, it looked nice!”
So they head off to said dinosaur ride, Kaveh sighed of relief once finding out it wasn’t a very harsh ride.
The ride starts off nicely, although there’s some harsh movements in the ride, Kaveh and Ajax sit next to each other. Just as Kaveh was going to say something, the ride turns, half throwing Kaveh onto Ajax. Which wasn't really a bad thing, since Ajax doesn’t seem to complain. Although… Ajax seems to be quite nervous. Perhaps it was because it’s dark, Ajax had mentioned once before that he was scared of the dark. Kaveh didn’t know how he remembered that, but this could be an opportunity, right?!
So, naturally, Kaveh took that opportunity.
He grabs Ajax’s hand hard, muttering a little ‘it’s going to be okay’, even then Ajax seems to be a little afraid. Ajax sits upright, with a tight expression on face. Kaveh found this action to be particularly interesting. He didn't expect Ajax to act like this when he is nervous, although this is quite sweet too.
And it happened again. Ajax was anxiously watching the ride. And, you guessed it, Kaveh was watching Ajax.
Then, it was dark. Really dark. So dark, that Ajax held onto Kaveh’s hand harder than before. Just as he was about to ask what’s wrong, he heard a tiny shriek coming from next to him. Originally, he was concerned. But then Ajax just cuddled up next to him, of course Kaveh wouldn’t mind that, almost as if he was trying to hide from whatever is going on.
Wait, what’s going on?
Kaveh looked around, spotting giant spiders on the ceiling.
He swallowed back a laugh of pure admiration, and held Ajax closer.
Getting off the ride, Kaveh held a hand out to Ajax. Ajax took his hand, and Kaveh just couldn’t hold back the laughter anymore.
But not laughter in the mocking sense, laughter in the loving sense.
“Oh, c’mon now. Don’t laugh…” Ajax frowned. And Kaveh was reminded again, of just how ethereal Ajax was. “I’m scared of spiders, blah blah blah, not that big of a deal…”
“No no, it’s not that,” Kaveh wiped at the tears in the corner of his eyes that had subconsciously formed while he laughed. “It was so silly… You’re so silly. Pfft, you’re afraid of something for once.”
That’s when Kaveh realized.
No matter how perfect Ajax might be, there’s always flaws.
Other people would call them flaws.
Kaveh would call them, well, more reasons to love Ajax.
