Work Text:

A comfortable warmth had spread through Lan Wangji. From the ends of his fingertips, across his palm and along his arm, expanding all the way to his chest and torso. Culminating in the pit of his stomach, where an incessant flurry of butterflies carried on fluttering away.

He was holding Jiang Cheng’s hand.

He’d just had the most fun, incredible and romantic date with his long time crush, now turned—and Wangji still can’t believe it—boyfriend, and they were holding hands as Wangji walked him back to his house.

Wangji sported a content little smile on his lips, while Jiang Cheng’s entire face was alight with a pink flush over his cheeks and a bright smile daring to rival the moon.

“Well, this is me. Wangji…thank you, again” Jiang Cheng sighed, eyes crinkled at the corners as he smiled warmly at Wangji.

“There’s no need for thanks” Wangji reminds him, they’d already talked about this. Wangji had been glad, ecstatic even, that Jiang Cheng had accepted coming out with him tonight. It was honestly a pleasure.

“Of course there is!” Jiang Cheng protested indignantly, “this was the best date I have ever been on…and, no one’s ever taken the time to do all of this for me” he mumbled looking down.

Wangji’s heart clenched. Jiang Cheng deserved nothing but the best and it was preposterous that no one had ever bothered to prepare a nice date for him before.

He was glad, however. In a weird way, because it meant Wangji could do it all. He’d show Jiang Cheng how he was meant to be treated, how he deserved to be treated.

“A shame, really” Wangji said quietly, cupping the side of Jiang Cheng’s face in the palm of his hand. He moved closer into his space, and tilted Jiang Cheng’s face upwards to face him. “A-Cheng deserves nothing but the best”

Wangji watched as Jiang Cheng licked his lips and his eyes widened slightly. Wangji smirked and began to lean in.

The door behind them swung open, startling Jiang Cheng out of Wangji’s hold.

He sighed remorsefully.

“Jie”

“Time to say goodnight, Jiang Cheng”

“I—but, Jie…”. The stern look Jiang Yanli gave her younger brother left no room for argument. Behind her, Wei Wuxian was snickering as he peaked at the couple over his sister’s shoulder. Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes and groaned, stomping his foot childishly.

He looked back at Wangji one last time, an apologetic smile on his face as he waved goodbye and stepped into his house where Wei Wuxian had begun to tease him.

“Good night, Lan Wangji” Yanli said, hands on her hips, and a knowing smirk on her lips.

Wangji bowed, mildly miffed at being interrupted in his last wonderful moments of his and Jiang Cheng’s date. He’d been so close to those plush, soft wonderful looking lips. And the opportunity to finally kiss Jiang Cheng had vanished right before him.

Wangji slammed his head on his steering wheel and sighed.

It was okay, there would be other perfect moments, hopefully, in which he could share his first kiss with Jiang Cheng.

Jiang Cheng and Wangji were both leaning against Jiang Cheng’s locker, discussing a horror movie they’d watched together over video call the previous night.

Jiang Cheng was highly upset that the film had been riddled with jump scares rather than anything else. Those were the worst kind of horror films in his opinion.

“The plot made no sense either? Like…and why kind of ending was that? So they all died, and the witch escaped?”

He ranted, as he stuffed books back into his locker, rummaging though his backpack, making sure he had everything he needed for his following class.

Wangji watched him amused, loving the way he was getting so worked up over this horror film and it’s discrepancies. His little frown pout was so cute, all Wangji could think of was, kiss, kiss, kiss.

He must kiss.

He’d just scooted closer to Jiang Cheng and locked their pinkies together in order to lean in and kiss him when someone slammed Jiang Cheng’s locker door shut.

Startled, both Wangji and Jiang Cheng stepped back, looking at a snickering Wei Wuxian.

“Wei Wuxian!” Jiang Cheng hissed, smacking his brother’s shoulder. “What the hell is wrong with you!”

“I thought you were done and needed help” Wei Wuxian shrugged, “seeing as both your hands seem to be occupied”

Wei Wuxian tilted his head downwards, where one of Jiang Cheng’s hands held on to his backpack, and the other was in Wangji’s hold.

Jiang Cheng rolled his eyes at his brother and pulled Wangji along with him as he started to make his way towards his next class.

“Tch…honestly” Jiang Cheng groaned, “he is a menace to society”

“Mn”. Wangji could not agree more.

Once again, he’d lost the chance to kiss JIang Cheng.

The booming bass of the music hurts Wangji’s ears. He can barely make out any faces through the fog and sea of sweaty people.

He should have just stayed home, but Jiang Cheng had asked him to come so nicely, Wangji couldn’t say no.

He was beginning to regret his decision, however.

“Lan Wangji!” Nie Huaisang screams in his ear, hooking his arm over his neck and pulling him down to his stature. “What a nice surprise, thought you were busy studying tonight”

“I’m looking for Jiang Cheng, have you seen him?”  Wangji asks instead, ignoring the little teasing jab.

“Ah, the boyfriend” Huaisang says, waggling his brows. “He was just dancing with Wen Qing a few seconds ago, perhaps he’s still somewhere in the dance floor?”

Wangji nods, and turns to scan the dance floor.

After a few seconds, he does find Jiang Cheng, jumping and dancing, singing along to the music. Wangji smiles despite himself, enjoying the way Jiang Cheng seems to be having a really good time with his friends.

He stands there, debating on wether to go to his boyfriend, or just letting him continue to enjoy himself. Wangji can’t imagine he’d be any good company in this kind of setting anyways.

Jiang Cheng makes the decision for him, though. He looks up just in time to catch Wangji’s eyes, a smile so big lightning up his face, it has Wangji heart stopping.

“You came!”

Jiang Cheng pushes his way out through the crowd on the dance floor and barrels into Wangji. Arms snake around his middle, and Jiang Cheng clings to him, face buried into the crook of his neck.

“You asked me to” Wangji tells him, hugging him back. “Have you been drinking?”

“Just a little” Jing Cheng shrugs, but Wangji has a feeling that that is a lie, considering Jiang Cheng is currently nuzzling his neck and pressing small feathery kisses into Wangji’s sensitive skin.

“Let’s get you some water maybe?”

“But I want to dance” Jing Cheng whines, nose pressed to the underside of Wangji’s chin.

“One song” Wangji tells him.

One song turns into two, then five, until eventually Wangji loses track of the songs, and time. He’d honestly just been content to have Jiang Cheng swaying, dancing and grinding on him.

As shameless as that was, Wangji was merely human and his boyfriend was hot.

“Let’s go upstairs for a breather” Jiang Cheng said as he pulled him towards the stairs of Huaisang’s house. Wangji followed dutifully, and made sure Jiang Cheng didn’t miss a step along the way in his inebriated state.

“Would you like me to get you some water?” Wangji asked, while Jiang Cheng took his hand and walked him over to an empty bed. “Are we allowed to be in here?”

“S’its—this Sang’s guest room” Hiang Cheng assured, “s’okay”

“If you say so”

Jiang Cheng stumbled onto the bed, sat up and patted the spot next to him, making Wangji chuckle. Jiang Cheng was too adorable for his own good sometimes.

Wangji walked over to him, and then got pulled in into a warm embrace, bracketed between Jiang Cheng’s legs. He stood there, with Jiang Cheng’s face pressed into his sternum, arms tight around his waist.

“Wangji…Wangji, Wangji, Wangji” Jiang Cheng chanted, looking up at him with half lidded eyes. “I want—“ hiccup, “I want to kiss you, so, so bad”

“So kiss me” Wangji tells him, smiling down at him. Jiang Cheng takes it as a challenge somehow and pulls Wangji down to sit next to him so that they can be at eye level.

“You’re so beautiful” he mumbles, hand cradling Wangji’s cheek, thumb caressing his face. Anticipation curdles in Wangji’s tummy as he watches Jiang Cheng’s eyes flutter shut, slowly leaning into Wangji’s space.

Wangji closes his eyes and waits for the sweet soft press of lips against his…but it never comes. Instead, there’s a small thump next to him, and when he opens one eye to peek at Jiang Cheng, disappointment washes all over him.

He’s asleep. Jiang Cheng just fell asleep while in the middle of trying to share a kiss. How was that even possible?

Wangji sighs and rearranges Jiang Cheng into a less awkward position on the bed. He lays down beside him and just watches him until sleep catches up to him as well.

Wangji wakes up feeling disoriented. He opens his eyes to unfamiliar surroundings before memories of the previous night catch up to him. He immediately sits up in bed and looks around.

Small rays of light peek through the opening of the blinds, lighting up the room with just enough natural light.

Besides him, Jiang Cheng is still sleeping soundly and Wangji smiles fondly.

As if feeling Wangji’s stare on him, Jiang Cheng begins to stir, slowly waking up until he blinks at Wangji.

It’s a few seconds before recognition settles in, then his eyes widen comically as he scrambles to sit up, looking around in confusion.

“Good morning” Wangji coos, a teasing tone to his words.

Jiang Cheng groans, clearly recalling last night and proceeds to cover his face with his hands.

“Oh my god, I’m so embarrassed” his muffled whines make Wangji laugh and Jiang Cheng removes his hands from his face in order to fix him with a glare. “This is not funny”

“Oh I don’t know, I think it’s kinda funny” Wangji tells him, scooting up closer.

“I can’t believe I passed out in the middle of trying to make out with you” Jiang Cheng grumbles, pressing his face into the comforter of the bed.

“Clearly you hadn’t just drank a little” Wangji teases.

“Shut up” Jiang Cheng tells him, lightly slapping him on the chest, “you hadn’t shown up, I thought—I was disappointed, okay? I mean I knew the chances of you actually showing up were slim, but then three hours passed and you’d yet to show up. I was disappointed, so I started drinking”

“M’sorry” Wangji tells him, pulling at Jiang Cheng and rearranging their bodies to where Jiang Cheng can lay on his chest. He secures his arms around his boyfriend and kisses the top of his head. “I didn’t think I’d be good company, I didn’t want to spoil your fun”

“You are the most fun human being I’ve ever been around” Jiang Cheng mumbles into his chest.

“Really, I figured that be Wei Wuxian”

“No, he’s the most obnoxious human being I’ve ever been around”

Wangji chuckles shaking his head.

“I’ll remember that for next time” Wangji promises. Jiang Cheng looks up at him and beams, to which Wangji smiles. “Will you give me that kiss now?” Wangji asks hopefully.

“Absolutely not, my morning breath must be horrible considering the amounts of alcohol I consumed last night. And I am still much to embarrassed, absolutely not”

Wangji sighs dejectedly but accepts it none the less.

Lan Wangji was tired.

It’d been a full month now since Jiang Cheng had become his boyfriend, and they had yet to share a proper kiss.

Sure Jiang Cheng had kissed his cheek, forehead, and hands on multiple occasions, but Wangji just wanted a taste of those luscious plump lips of his.

They’d been so close to kissing on multiple occasions, but they’d all been ruined one way or another. If it wasn’t that nosy, pesky Wei Wuxian, it was the school bell or a teacher or whatever.

Wangji was growing tired. He really was.

How hard was it to have the perfect opportunity to kiss his own boyfriend?

Pretty fucking hard, apparently.

But Wangji had had enough, and he’d promised himself that no matter what, today was the day he would kiss Jiang Cheng.

Marching with purpose, Wangji made his way across their school campus towards the locker area in which Jiang Cheng’s resided.

Squaring his shoulders as he rounded the corner, he finally made it to Jiang Cheng’s home room hall. He watched as Jiang Cheng stood in front of his locker pulling things out and into his backpack. He walked over to him and without a warming, pressed him against the lockers. Jiang Cheng’s belonging clattered to the ground, but he seemed to not have a single care in the world as he looked into the deep golden pools of honey staring down intensely at him.

“Good morning” Wangji said before leaning down to press his lips to Jiang Cheng’s. Finally, finally he was getting a taste of his A-Cheng’s sweet buttery plush lips and it was better than he’d ever imagined.

Jiang Cheng whined deep in his throat, the rumbling sound a sweet melody to Wangji ears. Hands clutched at Wangji’s shirt as he cradled Jiang Cheng’s face between his palms.

“Good—ah, good morning” Jiang Cheng panted, eyes still closed, fist shut tightly holding onto Wangji’s shirt.

“I’ll see you after class” Wangji mumbled pressing a small chaste kiss to Jiang Cheng’s lips.

Jiang Cheng merely nodded, still not opening his eyes and Wangji smirked. He felt such happy fulfillment that he just had to go back in for a quick second round. This time, Jiang Cheng did snake his arms around Wangji’s neck, and allowed him more than a press of lips.

“I—you, gosh—you’re so” Jiang Cheng groaned when Wangji pulled away with a wet pop. He buried his face into Wangji’s neck and chuckled.

“I’ll get going now, for real. I’ll see you afterwards?”

“Mn”

Jiang Cheng nodded and as Wangji left, all he could think about was the next time he’d be able to kiss Jiang Cheng.
