Meeting a Nuisance

Summary:

Chuuya and Chiharu meet Dazai, a member of the port mafia who is a bit odd.

Work Text:

Chuuya and Chiharu were fifteen when they got home from school to an odd sight. A teen about their age was chatting with their parents. Verlaine looked annoyed, while Rimbaud was explaining something to the brunette. Neither boy had been told they’d be having company that evening, so it was a bit unexpected.

Feeling a bit awkward, Chuuya decided to but into the conversation, “Um, who’s the kid?”

“Huh? I’m not a kid, I’m probably older than you! Plus, I could ask you the same question,” the boy snapped.

“Please, don’t fight. Chuuya, Chiharu, this is Dazai, he works with Verlaine and myself. Also, Dazai, you are younger than him, by several months,” Rimbaud hoped that his interruption would keep them from tearing each other apart.

Chiharu peeked over his brother’s shoulder, “Why is he here?”

Dazai decided to answer the question himself, “I am going on a mission with these two this weekend, which is all sorts of classified information. So, you can’t know about it.”

“He’ll be staying for supper, just so we can discuss some specifics. If you want, you two can eat in the living room or your bedroom, as long as the plates come back to the sink later,” Rimbaud wanted to avoid the chaos of having his youngest coworker interact with his kids.

“Hmm… you two looks really similar, are you twins?” Dazai asked, staring intently at the pair of redheads.

Chuuya was a second away from picking a fight, but was holding back, “Yes, why do you even care?”

He hummed, thinking about his answer, “Because you are odd, I mean, twins getting raised by mafia executives? It’s weird.”

That was enough to annoy Chuuya, as he kicked a chair, and was about to use his ability to launch it at Dazai. Until Verlaine stepped towards him, and pulled both twins out of the room. They didn’t know the person they were interacting with well, and it wasn’t a good idea to start a fight.

“Chuuya, you can’t fight him. He’s in a higher position in the mafia than me and Arthur. That kid is the boss’s right hand, and could try and drag you both into the mafia if he finds out about what you can do. Just try to ignore him, and he’ll be gone soon,” Verlaine explained, crouched down, so they would block Dazai’s sight.

Knowing him, he could read lips from any distance. The warning processed in both teens differently, with Chuuya gritting his teeth, and balling his hands into fists. While Chiharu shrunk in on himself, looking nervous, and a bit scared of Dazai.

“Just stay in your room, and Arthur or myself will bring your supper up in a bit,” he patted them both on the shoulders, before reentering the kitchen.

Dazai turned his head curiously as Verlaine came back, “I’m surprised you two are raising kids. Mafia executives, with kids who could easily be held hostage and used against you.”

Rimbaud got upset at that, “They are smart, and know to be careful. We only joined the mafia to have money for them anyway. Those two deserve the best, and we’re going to ensure that they have that.”

“Damn, it sounds almost like they weren’t something planned. Like you just took them in because you felt like you had to.” He smirked as he inferred part of why they had the twins.

“They didn’t have parents, so we took on the roles. There is nothing more to this for you to read into, and we would appreciate it if you kept their existence to yourself,” Verlaine was close to threatening the teen, and only held back since he was a superior to them.

The brunette looked pleased with himself, “I’ll keep this to myself, but I do expect something out of this. Whenever I decide what I want, you better let me have it.”

Both adults gave in, “Of course, as long as they’re safe, we’ll give you what you want.”

“Great, now that that is settled, let’s have something to eat and go over these plans. We’ve got lots to do, and not much time to do it. I’ve got to be back before eight tonight, since I still have plenty of paperwork to finish in preparation,” Dazai kept a cheerful tone going, despite how he dreaded his paperwork.

Upstairs, the twin redheads were trying to wrap their heads around the odd teen they’d just met. Chuuya still had a strong urge to fight him, and send him flying across the room, but knew he wouldn’t be allowed to. So he sat with Chiharu on the lower bunk, and silently fumed.

“He doesn’t seem that bad…” Chiharu tried to attempt conversation, knowing that his brother already had decided to hate Dazai.

“He’s dangerous, and I won’t let him put you in danger. Our parents clearly don’t trust him either, which means we shouldn’t hope he’s a nice guy,” Chuuya shut him down quickly, thinking the worst of Dazai.

Not sure how to get his brother to not pick a fight with the younger boy, he just fiddled with his stuffed animal. It was an orange cat, which was his favourite animal. Chuuya always argued with him, and said dogs were better, but he would just stick his tongue out and declare cats better. Sending all the stuffed animals in their rooms flying at him.

They both ended up sitting in silence until Verlaine came in with supper, and set it on the desk that they reluctantly shared. Getting up, they both sat in the chairs that were usually pushed into the desk. The blonde disappeared back downstairs, leaving them to eat, or in Chuuya’s case, push the food around the plate.

He was too frustrated to eat, and didn’t understand how his brother was so calm about everything. Chiharu was mostly unaffected by meeting Dazai, and had just seen him as another strange teenager, and not a threat. It baffled Chuuya, who was certain the brunette would be someone he’d have to defend his brother from someday.
