Work Text:
A hand slammed down on the table she was working at, causing Marinette to jump out of her skin. Her head shot up to meet a pair of brilliantly blue ones.
“Sorry that was aggressive. This seat taken?”
Marinette blinked dumbly up at them, brain not able to process the words thrown at her temporarily.
“Uh… yes… Yes! Sorry. Yes it is open. All yours, yep. Not that I saved it for you of course! But it just happened to be open and you can sit there if you’d like.”
Marinette directed a nervous smile at the gorgeous blond in front of her, hoping her word vomit wouldn’t throw her off and scare her away.
“Awesome!” She said, sitting down in front of her.
It had quite the opposite effect it seemed. Her kind smile grew bigger and she seemed more drawn in. Marinette was told that her shy blabbering could be charming to some people. She had never believed that.
“I’m Stephanie. But you can call me Steph,” she introduced herself, holding her hand out.
Marinette shook her hand, a bit surprised by the strength of her grip but returned it in equal, a boost of confidence bursting in her chest at the way the other woman’s smile grew.
“Marinette. But you can call me yours… I MEAN YEW! LIKE THE FLOWER?” Marinette bullshitted, trying to quickly scramble back, “I mean no one ever calls me that but you’re hot… SPECIAL! Special. And we might not be on a first name basis or actually maybe I’ll shut up and throw myself off the Eiffel Tower.”
She hid her face in her hands and wished the floor would swallow her like krill for a whale. She couldn’t live anymore. This was a stranger for goodness sake!
But once again she was surprised. Instead of being weirded out and quickly high tailing it out of here or even slapping her, she laughed. And it was such a gorgeous sound.
Marinette peaked through her fingers at the pretty woman before her, she had her hand covering her mouth so her giggles would be stifled a bit, not that it was doing much to stop it. Tears had gathered in the corner of her eyes and when she opened them, the sapphires shined with such mirth and joy that her lungs ran out of air and she found herself so drawn in, more so than she’d ever felt in her life.
“Well… now I don’t feel so bad for this,” she said once her laughter had died down.
Marinette tilted her head confused, “for sitting with me? There’s nothing to feel bad about…”
Marinette didn’t get to finish her sentence because slender fingers had slid into hers, entwining them with ease and she leant across the table and pressed her lips ever so gently to hers. Marinette’s eyes widened and her entire body went stiff.
She was kissing her.
She was kissing her!!!
What was she supposed to do? She just met this person? Should she push her off? Kiss her back? Report her?
“Relax love, go with it please. For me?” She whispered on her lips.
Marinette gulped and hesitantly took initiative this time, gaining more confidence as it went on until she had to pull away or else she’d end up in a full on make out session with a woman she just met in the middle of a coffee shop.
“I’m sorry!” She immediately blurted.
Steph quirked her brow at her, a goofy smile adorned her face, “for?”
“Kissing you.”
“Why should you be?” She asked, seemingly genuine as she let her hand rise and thumb trace her bottom lip, slightly leant over the table to reach so it further accentuated where she refused to let her eyes drift down to.
“Because…”
“ I kissed you. And for one, I’m not sorry about it,” she punctuated it with a wink.
Marinette felt like she was punched in the gut as all her air abandoned her high and dry and her face exploded in red. Was she flirting with her?!?! Marinette opened her mouth to respond but couldn’t get any words out, ending up looking like a fish out of water.
“I think you’re pretty hot yourself, don't worry. I actually came over to ask if you wanted to be my pretend girlfriend for the day…”
“YES!” Marinette excitedly yelled far too loud, attracting the eyes of the patrons around them. She embarrassedly smiled at them, apologizing softly.
Steph looked at her amused, “you didn’t even let me finish.”
“Sorry! Sorry! Continue please.”
Steph stood up and held out a hand for her. Marinette took it, letting the other woman pull her up from her seat and…
“Holy Batman you are tall,” slipped out of her mouth.
She chuckled, slapping a few bills down on the table and hooking their arms together, leading her out.
“I’ve only heard one person ever say that.”
They looked at each other and said ‘Nightwing’ at the same time, breaking out in giggles.
They left and walked down the sidewalk. Marinette wasn’t quite sure where they were headed but she followed along anyhow, content to spend more time with her and listen to the chatter on her brother who actually also used that phrase because he thought he was iconic.
“So, you want to be my fake girlfriend for the day?”
“I would love to,” Marinette said shyly.
Stephanie bumped their hips together, making Marinette look up at her so she could smile sweetly at her before pressing a kiss to her forehead.
“Good. I’ll pick you up at 8:00 pm sharp, Parisian girl. Dress nice, I’m taking us somewhere uptown.”
“Why do you need a fake date though if you don’t mind me asking?” While Marinette was over the moon to be able to go on a date with this drop dead gorgeous woman, fake or not, she couldn’t help but be curious why exactly.
“My brother is going to be there and I told him I have a hot girlfriend. He didn’t believe me so I have to prove it. The only issue is, I didn’t have a hot girlfriend.”
“Didn’t?”
Stephanie smirked at her, looking down at her from the corner of her eye, “you catch on quick lovely. I was hoping that this… arrangement could become a little more permanent .”
“You want to pretend to be dating me longer?”
Steph slipped out her arm from where it was hooked in hers put it around her shoulder pulling her in so they were pressed together. Marinette couldn’t help but blush at the contact.
“No I don’t.”
And suddenly it was like a bucket of ice had been dumped on her head. Rejected. Of course. She couldn’t help how her shoulder deflated and her heart sank.
“Hey,” she stopped them both, moving to the side of the sidewalk, no one in Gotham partially cared though, easily walking around them. The blond girl put a hand on Marinette’s shoulder, the other under her chin to have her look up at her, “I don’t want to pretend to be your girlfriend after tonight because I was hoping that maybe if you enjoy the time we have together… you might be willing to try a date or two more- real ones- and perhaps actually become my girlfriend?”
Marinette beamed up at her, her heart blooming and before she could think about it, surged forward and smashed their lips together.
“I’d love to! I’d love to! I’d love to!” She repeated after she pulled away.
Steph smiled dopely down at her, “I’m glad. I am too.”
And suddenly an alarm blared across the street, both women's heads snapping to it just in time to see the building wall being blown up.
“My house is that way,” Marinette quickly pointed with a nervous smile, hoping she had to continue going the opposite way she needed.
She was filled with relief when Steph told her, “yeah I have to continue this way. But get somewhere safe!”
Neither had time to think how odd it was that both were willing to leave each other during a crime scene when the safest bet would be to stay together.
They had a city to save. Again.
Bonus:
Marinette, now as Bombay, took off to the last place she saw Stephanie. Her heart was beating fast. She knew how dangerous Gotham was and suddenly she was filled with self-loathing. How could she leave her alone like that!?!?
She landed in a roll onto the rooftop and carefully approached the edge, looking over it inconspicuously so what looked to be Joker wouldn’t see her. She scanned the area, some victims had already been taken but there was no sign of the blond woman she was just with.
She found herself sighing with relief, despite the situation that was still playing out before her.
She heard the telltale sound of someone landing behind her, her ears shifting towards the noise automatically. She tilted her head to peer at them, only to find herself greeted with the sight of a tall woman with blond hair slightly concealed with a purple hood; a purple cape, gloves, boots, belt, and straps while the face mask and body piece were black and well fitting.
But what got her attention was those gorgeous sapphire eyes peering down at her.
“I don’t think we’ve had the pleasure of meeting yet,” the hero whispered, “I’m Spoiler. Mind if I join you?”
She swallowed hard as she watched her come, not actually waiting for the answer, crouching down next to her to observe the scene as well before returning her gaze to her, holding out a hand.
She took it, shaking it with the same pressure as the other woman had given, earning an appraising look.
“I’m Lady Bombay. But you can call me bae.”
