Work Text:

It was rainy that day roughly 20 years ago. Bruce remembered it being pretty hectic, Dick could not for the life of him sit still in the waiting room despite Alfred's many attempts to keep him calm and entertained. It was just them three, aside from the wide eyed cold patients who kept their distance but were no doubt having all kinds of theories about what the Billionaire was doing in the hospital.

The reason was pretty simple, even though for the playboy it was probably unheard of. He rubbed his temples, the buzz of the lights overhead were giving him a headache, and the anxiety of all this made him physically ill.

So it was such a relief when a nurse ,who was understandably perplexed, called. "Wayne?" He nearly shot up out of his seat, straightening out his suit blazer. He had been called in the middle of a meeting so he was a bit overdressed for this.

Silently, Alfred and Dick followed behind. one relieved and the other curious about what they were going to see. The three were led down halls, passing by droves of injured or sick patient rooms, before clearing past the doors of an isolated wing.

where everything was much quieter. Soon the nurse stopped in front of this room with a window that gave view to several rows of bassinets. The Nurse Gestured through the window, making Bruce near the glass. He was hesitant, scared even. Of what exactly he didn't know. That feeling of dread melted away along with the cold shell of his heart as he spotted a small pink bundle nestled in a bassinet Labeled "Wayne" in cursive.

His hands came up to the glass as a small smile broke out onto his face. Alfred watched him move with a fondness a father has when his son experiences a thing like this. Dick was already squinting through the glass, as if doing that would make his view of the baby any better.

"We do still need a name, sir"
Bruce is pulled from his trance by the voice of the nurse, who now was holding a birth certificate along with other documents that seemed only to be half filled out.

"Ah right, thank you" He takes the clipboard. His mind was cloudy as he thought carefully about this. It seemed that no matter what name he thought of it didn't feel good enough for the newborn just beyond the glass. His thoughts were interrupted by Alfred clearing his throat.

"May I… make a suggestion, Master Bruce?"

Bruce looked at him curiously, nodding for him to speak. "What did you have In mind, alfred?"

"Jade." Alfred said simply like the name just appeared in his mind automatically.

"Jade…"

"Yes. A precious stone, also known in a spiritual sense to mean kindness, gentleness and love."

"That's…" Bruce turned to the nursery again, his heart warming when spotting his child. His baby. "That's perfect."

He wasted no time signing the papers on the clipboard, handing them to the nurse who scurried away to file them. leaving the waynes alone with the nursery once again.

Bruce spoke up, barely above a whisper as if not to disturb the nursery, despite the impossibility.

"Welcome to the world… Jade Wayne."
