Work Text:
It was a dark, cold and rainy night at the Shinazugawa estate.
Sanemi sat on his porch, waiting for you to come home from your mission. Even a busy man like himself couldn't help, but wait for your return as you were a day late.
You were supposed to be here yesterday already and your tardiness was pissing him off.
He sat there, lost in his own thoughts for a while, just watching the rain pour down from the sky. The sound of slow footsteps caught his attention.
You stood about 5 meters away from the porch, getting drenched in the rain.
Sanemi sits still for a second, thinking of what his next words should be before he gets a better look at your form. You were disheveled, your uniform was slightly tattered, your hair was messy and wet as it fell over your eyes, there was blood dripping down your face and hands.
"What's wrong with you?" Sanemi asks, his question held a mixture of anger and curiosity, maybe a slight hint of worry to it as well.
You parted your lips to speak, but no words came up. The only noise between the two of you was the rain that poured down on your head. The blood dripping from your fingertips was staining the water it hit as you stood there, breathing quite heavily and just looking at Sanemi.
"Are you deaf?" He scolded, growing a bit impatient. He wouldn't usually act out at you, but he was growing impatient of your delay and silence.
You take a shallow breath, doing your hardest not to let your own emotions get the best of you.
"I just wanted to see you one last time." Your voice was quiet, tired. You were obviously exhausted from the mission and having to drag yourself back whilst bleeding out slowly.
There was a short moment of silence between the two of you.
"What are you talking about?" Sanemi asks, his voice was still laced with anger but he was more concerned than angry by now. He knew what you meant by what you said, he just didn't want to believe it to be true.
You don't respond. There's a small assuring smile on your face as you watch him, all your memories together floating to the surface of your mind.
You watch his eyes go wider as he rushes towards you. His tough façade is quickly shattered and replaced by an expression of worry and fear.
He couldn't bear to lose another person he loves. He couldn't bear to lose *you*.
He holds you close to himself, tears starting to cloud his vision.
You return the embrace lightly, not having much strength left in you. Your whole body feels weak, everything hurts, but it's okay because Sanemi's here with you.
"This really is just like I wanted it to happen." You put your head on his shoulder as tears welled up in your own eyes.
You always told yourself that you wouldn't care if you died, that you would accept it. But it was a lot different when you were actually about to as your lover held you close.
A couple of tears roll down your cheeks as you close your eyes, the ringing in your ears getting louder by the second.
"Don't do this to me. Please don't leave me." Sanemi quietly let out a few sobs into your shoulder as your hands fell from his back to your sides. He cried quietly for a minute, the only noises being his sharp breathing and the rain.
He wished he would hear your voice again, even your breathing would be enough. Instead he was met with complete silence. He could feel the beating in your chest come to an end as he held you close.
