The (Goddamn) Garden of Eden of Death and Rebirth [Art]

Summary:

Together they emerge, until they're sitting in front of the viewport, staring. Taking it in.

It's incredible. This isn't fresh, this is an older fall, this is fully established, an ecosystem in its own right - beds of mussels, their soft tissues pale and hazy like a halo of gossamer fuzz over the greening bones. They're in the middle of the ribcage, maybe - the ribs themselves have fallen away, toppled over by sharks and the general processes of time, and Ray strains himself trying to reconstruct the geography of the fall in his head. He doesn't know where his fucking notebook is and all the cameras are dead, obviously. All he has is his memory.

Work Text:

a watercolour painting of the ocean floor, showing several whale carcasses in various states of decay. They are surrounded by eels, sharks, purple octopuses, and red crabs

an interpretive watercolour painting, done in shades of pale green, of the ocean floor. A pale white shark circles over a whale skeleton. Other whale carcasses are vaguely visible in the distance

Notes:

Trojie is an amazing writer who's written some my favourite fics, so it was an absolute honour to create for them. I had a ton of fun going out of my comfort zone to really capture the scene!

I made the first painting early on in the challenge, before they had even gotten to writing that part of the fic. They basically told me 'elephant graveyard, but whales. whale graveyard' and I was like 'sick. on it boss.' I'm still happy with what I created, but after reading the scene I didn't feel like I had really done it justice, hence the second painting. It's a little more interpretive, a little simpler, and my first time using salt with watercolour in a long time, but I had a ton of fun playing around with it and I feel like it captures the scene just a little better.
