Work Text:
The storm continued throughout the following day and well into the afternoon. She sits on the porch swing humming along to the record as it plays through the window. It wasn’t raining as hard as the previous night but just hard enough to lull her into a nap-like state. She often waited on the swing for Eddie to return from work. It was their ritual, if one got home before the other they would wait on the porch for them to get home. Tonight she was enjoying Santo and Johnny. Something about tonight made her decide that the steel guitar was the best sound. To her it went well with the constant patter of the rain on the roof and ground. Her head gently sways to the rhythm of the music as she wonders what they should have for dinner.
“Feels like a stew kind of night.” She knows Eddie will eat anything she cooks. But with the weather how it’s been and how Eddie will probably come home sopping wet again, stew is probably the best choice. She peers at the clock through the window.
‘2:30. Eds will probably be a couple more hours and the stew takes a couple hours to cook. I’ll head in at quarter after and be back out here long before he gets home.’ She smiles at her plan.
When 3:30 rolls around she heads into the house and begins prepping the stew. She hums along to the music as she chops the vegetables. As the render down she begins to slice and sears the meat. She gets everything put together into the big pot on the stove. She sets it to simmer then covers it. She then sets the timer then grabs her book before heading back out to the porch swing to read with her music and the rain to keep her company.
It’s about quarter to 5 when she hears the familiar rumble of Eddie’s music coming up the drive. The stew is simmering nice and slow, she’s almost done with her book; not that it was a long read. His car stops in front of the garage and his music cuts out as the engine turns off.
She smiles and puts down her book as he sprints up the walkway and up the steps out of the rain. She has to cover her book and face as he shakes off the water laughing. “Nice to see you too babe.”
He grins wildly. “It’s good to be home.” He sniffs the air. “I smell stew.”
She shakes her head. “That’s ‘cause it’s cooking. It still has about a half hour. So plenty of time to wash the day off and get into comfortable clothes.”
“Perfect.” He opens the door and bows with a flourish. “After you milady.”
She gets up and curtseys. “Why thank you good sir.” She walks in smiling then squeals when she feels her butt pinched. “Edward.”
He just smiles cheekily. “Couldn’t resist.” He toes off his shoes.
She gently swats his arm. “Go warm up before you get a cold. You know how miserable you get.”
He mock salutes her and impersonates the Ministry of Silly Walks to the bathroom. She shakes her head smiling. She then walks to the record player, removing the vinyl from the spindle. She walks over to the kitchen and grabs bowls and spoons before setting the table. She then gives the stew a stir. When she hears the shower turn off she walks over to the turntable and places the needle down onto the spinning record. She lets more Santo and Johnny fill the house and she walks down the hall to their bedroom. She changes out of her day clothes and into her loungewear. When she heads back to the kitchen she sees Eddie cutting the bread and trying the stew.
“Think it’s done babe.”
She smiles and walks over “Let me try.” She steals the rest of his bread and dips it in the stew eating it in one bite. “Perfect. Can you grab the bowls?”
He silently hands them over then she starts ladling the stew. They take their bowls to the table and sit down to eat. They talk about their day at work over the meal.
After the meal was finished and the dishes were done they get cleaned up for bed in silence. They then crawl into bed and snuggle close soon they turn off the lights and allow the rainstorm to lull them to the sweet Dreamland.
