Work Text:
Kashuu wakes up to Yasusada’s hand hitting his face.
It’s not a surprise, not when he knows well enough how much of an annoying roommate Yasusada is and that they’re sleeping in futons and Yasusada always manages to roll out of his own futon to aggravate him every time. Normally, Kashuu would just kick Yasusada back to his bed and go back to sleep, but the slap on his face was enough to fully wake up Kashuu, and he realises he’s not going back to bed any time soon.
He decides he’s going to kill Yasusada in his sleep.
Kashuu doesn’t get to do so, though, when he notices a shadow pass by their bedroom. A shadow against the dim light at the bottom of their door, and suddenly Kashuu doesn’t really feel like shoving his pillow onto Yasusada’s drooling face. He looks at the window, and he sees that it’s still dark. Very dark.
He leaves the room anyway, and the dim lights of the hallway greet him. Kashuu thinks he’s not that groggy anymore, no, and he’s definitely sure he saw that shadow walk by. He looks at the clock at the end of the hallway. Four A.M., and Kashuu curses at himself.
He should’ve just gone to bed. Instead, Kashuu is out here, curiosity getting the better of him and probably chasing some ghost. He’d say he doesn’t believe in them, but he’s a tsukumogami, a spirit, a ghost, and he’s very much real. Kashuu decides ghosts aren’t real anyway and to jump on whoever’s up at such an hour.
So he goes and follows the dark figure from a distance, sees it stumble on its feet (it’s hilarious), and it goes straight to the kitchen and turns on the light. Kashuu blinks, and he goes straight to the kitchen as well. Upon quietly entering the kitchen, Kashuu’s eyes adjust to the bright light, and he hears water running.
He blinks, and he sees Horikawa leaning onto the sink.
“…Hori-chan?”
That takes Horikawa by surprise, and Kashuu isn't even trying. He visibly flinches, then there’s a bang and a groan, and Kashuu realises the other had probably hit his toe against the cabinet under the sink.
Kashuu tries very hard not to laugh out loud.
“Uggghhh,” Horikawa groans as he kneels down to tend to his hurt toe, leaving the faucet running. Kashuu sees there’s a mug in the sink, overflowing with water, and he thinks Horikawa’s probably trying to get some water to drink.
“Are you okay?” Kashuu helpfully asks as he approaches Horikawa. The wakizashi obviously isn’t in the best condition. His hair is sticking out in all directions, and he doesn’t seem very concerned about the way his yukata is about to hang loose on one shoulder. Horikawa looks like he literally just woke up and went through hell while half-asleep.
It’s cute, Kashuu thinks.
He turns the faucet off, and he helps Horikawa up. “Get a grip,” Kashuu says when he realises Horikawa is being far too heavy to help up. “You just, like, hit your toe. You’re not dying.”
“Ngguhh.”
“Jesus,” Kashuu says, and he’s not even supposed to exert so much strength at lifting Horikawa; the guy’s far shorter and lighter than him. “Why are you even awake at, like, four A.M.? Are you aware of how early it is?”
Horikawa mumbles nonsense in reply.
“This is going nowhere,” Kashuu says, and he puts Horikawa in a chair after managing to get him up. Horikawa in turn, hits his head onto the dinner table, and he doesn’t move.
There’s even, deep breaths, and Kashuu realises he went straight back to sleep.
He decides not to wake him up.
--
It’s around 4:47 A.M. when Horikawa woke up, and he realises, in his horror, he drooled on the dinner table.
He’s not supposed to do that. Hell, he’s not even supposed to wake up so early today. Arriving yesterday after a whole day expedition, he decided he’s going to skip waking up early today and sleep through the morning. Horikawa knows everyone is capable enough to make their own breakfast even without him or Mitsutada. He doesn’t remember getting up. He definitely doesn’t remember going to the kitchen and falling asleep on the table. And drooling on it.
Well, Horikawa did it, anyway, and he’s already here and awake. Might as well make breakfast for everyone.
He stands up, and he just notices a mug with a saucer and a note over it. Horikawa takes off the saucer, and he sees there’s coffee in the mug. Horikawa blinks, and he takes the note off the saucer and reads it.
“its probably cold already by the time you read this, so just heat it in the microwave when you wake up! take care of yourself more~ ❤️”
Ah.
He knows this handwriting.
When Mitsutada and Hasebe arrive in the kitchen, Horikawa is mostly done with breakfast, and they see that he’s in an incredibly good mood. They don’t fail to notice that Horikawa hasn’t shaved yet, though, or changed his clothes, for that matter, and they kick him out of the kitchen.
