Work Text:

Humans were something that Mahito took great interest in. He enjoyed reading about them, watching them, and experimenting with them regularly and often he used this information to compare them with curses. He had yet to find, in his opinion, any real way that humans were better than curses. It did strike him a little, finding similarities between them, though he supposed Jogo must have been right when he said curses were just the natural evolution to humans.

As part of Mahito’s people watching he occasionally found himself at a small park near the building that the curses used to house their hideout. As much as he enjoyed being at the artificial beach, he sometimes needed a break from Jogo’s temperamental nature. Today was one of those days.

Mahito had found himself perched atop a large metal contraption that seemed like a crumpled up building. He vaguely remembered Geto telling him that it was a ‘jungle gym,’ though there wasn’t anything quite jungle about it. As the curse sat he noticed that amongst all the families and kids playing, was a person just handing out flyers. Almost all of the families had taken one, which made Mahito curious. What kind of secrets did this person have?

Jumping down off of the jungle gym, Mahito headed over toward the woman. She didn’t seem to notice him at all, so there wasn’t anything special about her.

Fortunately she was so occupied by the family she was speaking to that she didn’t notice Mahito slipping a paper from the stack she carried with her. Walking over to a shaded area he sat down to read the paper.

FIREWORKS! Covered the top of the flyer, which definitely interested Mahito. Tomorrow night there would be fireworks at this park, he’d read about them before and been curious so he was already set on trying to go see them. Maybe Geto would know the best way to watch the fireworks, as he didn’t particularly want to just be in some crowded place with humans all around if his goal wasn’t to watch them.

The sun was close to setting as Mahito made his way back to the park he had visited the previous day, however, this time he was not alone. Geto walked next to him, leading the way as he tended to do whenever they went anywhere together.

It didn’t take much convincing on Mahito’s part to get Geto to come along with him, the man seemed interested as soon as Mahito brought it up. He even offered to take the curse to a special spot to watch the fireworks that he promised would likely have the least humans as possible.

They turned suddenly, right before the park and headed up an outdoor staircase cut into the side of a larger than normal looking hill. It didn’t take them very long to reach the top but the night was fast approaching around them. Geto ushered Mahito over to a cliff-like edge of the hill, where they both sat down near a bush.

The view was amazing, overlooking the park and the surrounding city along with the spillway that led to Mahito’s own hideout. It was a sight Mahito hadn’t seen before, so he appreciated being shown.

“Now we wait, it shouldn’t be much longer now,” Geto said quietly, not wanting to speak too loudly when he knew his companion couldn’t be seen by the few couples that chose this spot as well.

Mahito looked around impatiently, he really wanted to see the fireworks. As he looked around though he noticed that the only people that had also chosen this hill to watch were couples, he supposed that wasn’t abnormal, but he was curious.

“Geto why aren’t there many people here? Are humans so stupid that they don’t understand when they’ve created a view as nice as this one?” Mahito asked, as if it had to be some reason like that. He was glad there wasn’t much of a crowd, but it was odd to him.

Geto laughed to himself softly, the curse was more perceptive than he gave him credit for.

“Fireworks are for everyone, yes, but secluded places like this are where couples come to enjoy the show together, a nice date for summer lovers. A place to sneak away from prying eyes around them to have a moment together,” Geto explained, a small smile on his face as he spoke. His eyes no longer fixed on the skyline waiting for the fireworks but settled on the patchwork curse next to him.

Once again Mahito had found himself on a date with Geto. For a moment Mahito thought he should have been annoyed by the prospect, but he did enjoy Geto and while they weren’t a human couple, they were lovers. Though he supposed this time it was him who invited the man out instead of the other way around. The thought was amusing to him in a way, a curse and a human man on a date, hidden amongst the other human couples.

Mahito met Geto’s eyes, he opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by a loud popping sound in front of them. The fireworks had started, Mahito quickly turned his attention away from the smiling man next to him and looked out over the park.

After a few more seconds he watched as streaks of light filled they sky, popping and cracking in shimmering displays of color. It was much different than he had expected, no real fire, and yet the sight did have the curses full attention.

He was so distracted by the sight that he failed to notice Geto hadn’t taken his eyes off of him. Instead of watching the display directly, the man had chosen to take in the colors as they reflected off of Mahito’s patchwork face. Shining against the look of wonder on the cursed face.

What a beautiful sight, the two of them simultaneously thought.

Notes:

Hello! Another Mahito Month prompt, a little shorter than the others. This one I thought was too cheesy, but I do like it. Same name on tumblr, kenjakusbrain on twitter <3 please comment/kudos with your thoughts!
