For Project Sekai Fiction Summer Scramble 2023

To Neneko, I'm honestly just as surprised as you are that I happened to be your gifter. Nonetheless, I do hope you enjoy this fluff of EmuNene. Romance is not my strong point and I think it shows here >﹏<

But anyways, I need to go get some rest now (I may have written most of this last minute oops)

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Being an Ootori, a family with a whole corporation under their name, had many benefits. One was the obvious wealth for having such a big corporation, which would also have the benefits to living in a higher social class, and all of the other fancy stuff.

However, all of those benefits don't even come close to one benefit that Nene had in mind. Ootori Nene (formerly Kusanagi) was getting ready for the day, looking through her planner. Being a main musical actress of Phoenix Wonderland sure gave her a quite packed schedule. Rehearsals, photo shoots, shows, show offers, advertising campaigns, recording sessions, interviews…

Boy, she has a lot on her plate this time. She already feels herself being overwhelmed. Yes, she’s been doing this for a few years now, but she can’t help but feel overwhelmed sometimes with her busy schedule.

She can’t really handle the stress by herself that well either. Normally in times like these, she would start gaming away. Though these days, due to how busy she is now, she has no room to really fit games into her schedule anymore. The entertainment industry sure knows no boundaries with its endless schedules…

“Good morning Nene-chan!”

And almost instantly, her feelings of anxiety dissipated, upon hearing the voice of a certain pinkette entering the room. “Oh, good morning, Emu,” she replied.

Ootori Emu is Nene’s beautiful wife. She is the current president of Phoenix Wonderland, working not only to maintain the park and keep it open but to also retain the image that her grandfather always wanted it to be.

Emu sits herself next to Nene, quick to start eating today’s breakfast. Judging by her slight rush and her later than usual start, she’s probably running a little late this morning. It’d be best to try to not disturb her as much as possible…

“Don’t you think today is so wonderhoy?”

“…Huh?” the Songstress replied at the unexpected comment.

“The birds chirping outside, all the flowers blooming, the buzzing bees greeting the flowers ‘Good morning!’ and the flowers greeting back…” the pinkette continued on.

And now, she’s rambling on about the joyful world around her. It may seem childish, especially considering how it doesn’t fully make sense along with her use of onomatopoeia, but it’s one of Emu’s best qualities. The way her pink eyes sparkled as she rambled. The cute squeakiness in her voice. Her childlike wonder and imagination to find positivity even when it’s hard to find, and finding solutions to make everyone happy.

After all, she is hyper positive. The childish energy she radiates, wanting to make everyone around her smile and make everything bright and happy. It’s the very quality that made Nene fall for her all those years ago. And to think that despite working in the world of business, she’s still shining and resonating with that same cute and lovable energy…

“…And then, there’s also you, Nene-chan!”

Nene was caught by surprise hearing herself amidst the rambling. “Eh?”

“Nene-chan, you’re my super-duper-sparkly-warkly-jiggly-wiggly-huzzah-ful wife! You always make me feel so warm and fuzzy inside even when I’m down. Your smile brightens everything around you. And hearing your singing makes my heart go thumpa thumpa all across my chest.”

The pinkette suddenly lunged from her seat, tackling Nene into a tight, but warm hug. A hug Nene knows she can feel safe in, with her cute, lovely wife.

“Neeeeneeee-chaaaaan!” Nene’s heart definitely skipped a beat right there. “You are the most wonderhoy wife I could ever had! I love you soooo much!”

“Y-You really can’t express that enough?” the actress remarked lightheartedly. Not like she really minds it that much.

It’s not the first time this has happened, as Emu had more… violent? No, brighter outbursts than this before. Nene savors the moment though as these kinds of moments happen rather occasionally.

Eventually, Emu releases the hug and sits back down in her seat. By now, she’s finished her breakfast, so it doesn’t really make sense what she’s waiting for now. Isn’t she running a little late today?

“So, are you leaving now?” Nene asks.

“Hweh?” the pinkette tilts her head.

“You came out ready a little late, didn’t you? Aren’t you going to be late to work if you don’t leave now?” Nene elaborated.

“Oh, no! I have more time today! Please don’t worry!” Emu answered.

“Also, I was walking around the garden earlier. I was looking around, checking up on our flowers. While I was looking through the flowers…”

Emu pulled out a flower from the pocket of her suit. The flower had long, white and violet petals stemming from its dark purple center.

She then held the flower up in front of Nene. As Nene inspected it a little closer, she felt some kind of aura coming from it. One that felt like warm affection with an indescribable sweetness added to it.

“I found this one that I wanted to show you! I could hear your singing from it!” the pinkette adds.

Nene giggles a little in response to that comment. She thinks a little more about the aura of the flower. It was delightful, but there was something else to it. It felt almost similar to the brightness Emu emits. All the love they shared with each other, constantly picking each other back up, the fun they had hanging out and messing around before…

Emu’s presence is always delightful. She’s like a sunshine that brings light to everything, and the rays take the place of her cuteness, childishness, prettiness, and of course, her big smile. A gift that just keeps on giving in their relationship.

“Nene-chan, what do you think?” Emu inquires.

The songstress starts her answer by standing up from her seat.

“Emu.” This time, it was Nene’s turn to be giving the hug.

She pulls her wife up close to a tight embrace. Face buried into her shoulder, she feels that warmth once again as she holds Emu in her arms close. She absolutely loves this.

“I love you,” she whispers.

“I love you too, Nene-chan,” Emu replies as she reciprocates the embrace.

They stood there for a few more moments before they finally released the embrace. Nene takes a good glance at Emu’s face. Her smile, bright pink eyes behind half rim glasses, long silky pink hair, and her suit as well. Who would’ve known Emu looked so good in suits? Not the Nene several years ago.

“Well, ready to go to work? We can go together!”

Oh right, they still have to get to work. And to go together? Emu really is the gift that just keeps on giving, isn’t she?

“Oh, sure. Let’s get going,” the songstress answers.

They share a quick kiss with each other before they start making their way to Phoenix Wonderland, where they work to achieve their goal of making everyone smile.

To think that Nene was dreading a little at first in the start of her day before Emu showed up to brighten her day. Living with Emu is definitely the best benefit to living the life of an Ootori.

Sure she had a higher social class, a whole corporation belonging to their family, and the benefit of working for the good of her family’s business as they continue to support her in her present and future activities. However, none of those combined could even compare to living with the brightest sunshine that is named Ootori Emu.

And btw if you were curious, the flower I described in the fic is a cineraria.
