It was hot and yet Miku’s already warm body felt the need to warm her cheeks more.
Miku frowned; was homeostasis (that was the word, right? Biology was never her good subject) even real? She made a mental note to debate Gumi about its real-ness.
Despite the hellish weather, however, that wasn’t the main concern; the main concern was the boy sitting next to her making her stomach tie up in knots.
Also it didn’t help that she was riding the tallest roller coaster in the theme park with him.
“We got this! Let’s prove to them that we can beat this roller coaster” said Kaito. He offered his hand for a high five. Miku tapped his hand with hers, her smile unsteady from all her trembling. He smiled back at her, his smile an otherworldly, dazzling experience, and her cheeks began to reach egg-frying temperatures.
Miku leaned back on her seat as the roller coaster attendant checked each row’s lap bar. Stupid Rin, stupid Teto - why did they taunt her and Kaito about their fear of roller coasters? Of course, she knew why, but she didn’t think they’d try to use her fear against her. She was going to get them after this - well, if she survived this. At least Kaito chose a row in the middle, thank goodness for that, thought Miku.
Suddenly the train jolted before moving forward slowly and smoothly. Oh god, Miku thought, this was really happening, this is really happening.
“Hey, are you okay?” said Kaito.
“Y-yeah-h,” stuttered Miku in fear of her impending doom, “I’m n-not sc-scared at all.”
“It’s okay. Here, you can hold my hand.” He interlocked his fingers in hers, and her heart began to beat even harder - if not the roller coaster, maybe she would die from her own heart.
As they began to ascend, Miku gripped Kaito’s hand tight and closed her eyes, hoping the act would make everything less terrifying.
Suddenly the train abruptly stopped. Miku opened her eyes to see that they were almost at the top. Her phone rang, and she reached for it.
“Hello?”
“Girl, I told you not to bring your phone with you! Anyways, I may have knocked out the person in charge of running the roller coaster and jammed the stop button.”
“What?”
“Hey let go of me! Sorry, got to go! This is your chance! Go for it Miku! Get your hands off of me, I can expl-”
God damn it Teto.
“Was that Teto? What was she calling about?” Kaito asked.
“No idea.” Miku unfortunately did have an idea, and she didn’t always have an idea on what was going on with anything or anyone. What was the saying Rin was always saying? Blissful dumbness? Ignoring is bliss? Oh, whatever.
“I don’t think this is part of the ride,” said Kaito.
“It’s not,” someone behind said, “I’ve been on this ten times today, and it does not stall at all. I’m guessing someone’s going to get us, but it might take hours.”
A kid started to cry in front of them.
“Sweetie, it’s going to be fine,” the mom said.
“No it’s not! W-we’re going to die here!”
“Hey!” Miku said.
The mom and the kid stared at her.
“You know, whenever I get scared, I always sing this song.”
“What’s a stupid song going to do?”
“Exactly! It’s so stupid you forget why you’re scared.”
She started singing Ievan Polkka, euniciating each syllable clearly despite it being in a foreign language. When she was finished, she looked at the kid expectantly.
“Now I want you to try!”
The kid stuttered and stumbled through it, though surprisingly the kid reached the end.
“There you go! Together now!”
Miku and the kid started to sing together. Then Kaito joined in and another and another until everyone was singing, some even clapping along.
“Let’s see if we can sing it faster!”
Miku went faster each time - it only seemed like 5 minutes until they heard someone call to their attention.
“Ok! We will start rescue operations now. Please wait until we dismiss your row to climb down the stairs.”
Everyone cheered.
“That was incredible," said Kaito.
Miku’s heart stopped.
“R-really? You think so? It’s nothing really, my aunt used to sing it to me whenever there were thunderstorms. It made me want to become a singer, to make people feel like they were less alone.”
“It was my grandfather for me. I used to be scared of the dark as a kid, so every night he would sing me 'Fireflies' until I fell asleep.”
Miku perked up, reveling in the bliss of her crush opening up to her.
Then Miku noticed something peculiar. “Are you still holding my hand?”
“That obvious huh?”
“What’s obvious?”
“Oh! It's uh - I'll just say it! I like you.”
“Oh. I like you too.” Now Miku's cheeks were as hot as the sun's core.
"Okay lovebirds. You can continue this shit once you get down," one of the rescue operation guys said.
Blushing, Miku and Kaito got out of the roller coaster and into the world, never letting go of each other.
The End.
