Martyn pulled the heavy blanket higher up their necks, pressing himself, if possible, even closer into Ren’s side as he felt the man beside him shiver. The air was chilly outside, this late at night, with nothing above their heads but the deep blue blanket of the night sky and the bright pinpricks of starlight dotting it. The cool stone bricks that built up the castle under their backs did little to keep them warm, even with the blanket that they laid beneath them. A flash of brightness shot across their field of vision. The moon glinted off of Ren’s wide-open eyes as he turned his head slightly toward him to speak.
“Did you see that shooting star?”
Martyn hummed, “You gonna wish on it?”
“Don’t need to,” he replied, a joyous ring to his voice. When Martyn glanced toward him with his eyebrows raised, his eyes were already back on the sky. “I’ve already got all I could wish for. I’ve got you. My very own shooting star.”
Martyn hummed thoughtfully.
“What, not impressed by my exemplary flirting?” Ren asked, giggling.
“I— Well. Shooting star is sweet. But they’re so unpredictable. Don’t know when they’ll be there, and they’re gone before you know it. And they aren’t even really stars. Just burning pieces of falling space trash. There are more beautiful things to be than shooting stars, is what I mean to say. Like a normal star. A real star.” He twisted his head to lock eyes with Ren, who had been listening to him with a look of absolute wonder written across his face. “You’re my star. The constant in my life. Even when I can’t see you, I know you’re there, you’re always there, that I just have to wait until the sun goes down and the world goes dark and you can look down on me and I can look up at you again. Hey– why are you crying?”
“I’m not–” Ren choked on something that very much resembled a sob, “Oh, alright. Yes I am. But can you blame me? That’s the sweetest thing I’ve ever heard from you! From anyone!”
“Awh…” Martyn cooed, rolling onto his knees to lean over Martyn, cupping his face in warm hands. His thumb brushed over tear-stained skin, then closed the distance between them and kissed the wetness from his cheeks. He watched, a satisfied grin turning his lips up, as Ren’s eyes fluttered shut with a shaky exhale. He moved lower, laying gentle kisses onto his jaws, the corner of his mouth, before capturing cold lips in his own. Ren immediately kissed him back, arms untangling from the blanket to wrap around Martyn’s shoulders and pull him closer, the two of them a bubble of warmth in the cool night air.
“Do you really mean it?” Ren asked as he pulled away for a desperate lungful of air.
“Every. Single. Word.” Martyn replied, punctuating each word with another chaste kiss against pliant lips.
Above them, a shooting star flashed across the sky, gone unnoticed. But it didn’t matter. The stars would still be there for them for when they laid back down, somehow even snugger together than before, eyes hazy and lips spit-slick.
