Work Text:
“hey hey, Apollo look at me, it’s okay, you’re okay now”
We were laying down on grass when I noticed the change in the atmosphere, everything became quiet, even the sound of the wind couldn’t be heard anymore. The birds who were flying around cheerfully moments ago, were gone.
I looked at Apollo, he wasn’t laying down anymore; he was seating and covering his face with his hands, I couldn’t see him but I could hear him whispering something, and his hair… his golden beautiful hair was glowing, flying in every direction, breaking free from whatever forces that were holding them down before.
He was having one of his visions, I remembered our conversation when he explained to me how they worked; so I kept my promise and didn’t get close to him.
/”so you can see the future?”
“yeah, but they’re not always clear, sometimes it just gives me a vague idea of what’s gonna happen next… but sometimes they’re crystal clear;
and they are always definite.”
I got a little closer and cupped his cheeks; “the way you described them… it sounded painful, do they hurt?”
He leaned more into my hand and smiled
“don’t worry about me, love. I am used to them now. Besides, it’s not like I have control over them, so I’ve learned to deal with them on my own.”
He was so close to me, I could see every single one of his golden freckles sitting beautifully on his face. Everything about Apollo was so bright, if you’d asked me no one could’ve been a better sun god.
He radiated life and energy.
His presence so big and bright yet unreachable.
But he was here, smiling at me like there’s nothing more important in the world than us and our moment.
If I hadn’t heard the tragic tales of all the mortals who dared get close to the gods, I could’ve been truly happy.
“Hyacinthus, my love, you can ask me questions instead of pouting like that, I mean it’s cute but we don’t want you drowning in your thoughts, do we?”
“sorry but I just thought; what if someone tries to help and pull you out of that state? What would happen then?”
“well if /someone/ wants to help, they can be there after the prophecy’s over, that would be more than enough. But Hyacinthus you have to promise that you would NEVER EVER touch me or even get close me when I’m having a vision, okay?”
“yes I promise, but why?”
“because people would be able to see the things I’m seeing if they touch me during a vision.
but the mortal mind can not handle it, I don’t want to hurt you Hyacinthus…”/
So I waited and worried and watched.
I watched as his body started to levitate and he faced the sky.
His eyes were glowing. He opened his mouth and I thought he was gonna scream but no sound came out and everything remained silent.
And as sudden as it had all started, it ended too. The air shifted back to normal and the deity collapsed to the ground.
I hurried to him to see if he’s okay, his eyes were open but he wasn’t looking at me, I held his hand to let him know that he’s not alone.
“Apollo… are you alright? It’s over now…”
He tried to stand up but he was still shaking so he just leaned against the nearest tree, he was still avoiding looking at my face.
“it was so clear, Hyacinthus but I- I can’t remember
I felt so lost, so lonely
I just- I need a minute to remember”
I took his hand again and squeezed it a little in reassurance, “it’s okay, you can take your time, I’m here for you”
A few moments passed in silent, he was breathing so heavily
Suddenly he looked at me, eyes blown wide, and started crying.
“I remember now, I- I am so sorry Hyacinthus, I didn’t know…”
He pulled me into a hug, I could feel how fast his heart was beating, I had never seen him this upset.
“I’m here now Apollo, you’re not alone”
I didn’t know what else to say and how to comfort him so I just held him tight and stroked his hair.
I didn’t ask him about his vision, I didn’t need to know
The fates were cruel and all my hopes about them making us an exception were gone now…
Apollo, the god of prophecies and many other things was still crying in my arms, holding me so tight like he never wanted to let go.
“I am so sorry Hyacinthus, please forgive me…”
