Solace

Summary:

If Logan hadn't trusted Su Ryeon with the life jacket and tracking device.

Notes:

I know this is like so late because Penthouse literally had it's finale like LAST YEAR, but hear me out I'm late to everything and recently my aunt recommended this drama to me and now I'm invested soooo WOO
Also also I hope I didn't mischaracterize Logan or anything ahaaa, I know he's usually the calm and collected type who usually knows what he's doing (so watching him cry in the finale was heartbreaking) but it's pretty obvious that he's desperate when it comes to protecting the people who are dear to him SO YEAHH

Work Text:

Logan and Eun Byeol watched from afar, as Seo Jin continued to lash out on Su Ryeon, refusing to admit to her wrongdoings. Eun Byeol had already made a police report, and they could only continue to watch in silence as the two took turns to pin each other to the car by the shoulder, arguing. It wasn't long before the police had arrived, and Su Ryeon had broken it to Seo Jin that Eun Byeol had been here all along, listening to every word she had said, every confession she had made, albeit a bit indirectly. Seo Jin looked horrified, as she glanced up to see Eun Byeol, on the verge of a breakdown as Logan tried to calm her. As the police were rapidly approaching the two, Seo Jin turned to Su Ryeon, mumbling something that was near inaudible to the two above.

"If you hadn't came into my life, I would've been happy. Eun Byeol, me... and even Yoon Chul, we would've been happy." Seo Jin snarled at Su Ryeon, who only huffed at the statement.

"Happy?" Su Ryeon smiled in annoyance. "You don't deserve to be happy, and now... You never will be."

"Why you—" Seo Jin grabbed Su Ryeon by the shoulders, before turning to see the police on their way. "This isn't fair, I shouldn't have to die alone." Seo Jin mumbled spitefully, but what she doesn't expect is Su Ryeon seizing her shoulders too.

"That's exactly what I want." Su Ryeon smiles, but there is some insanity behind that smile of hers. It isn't warm or radiant, at all. It looked so wrong, it even shocked Seo Jin, as she had never seen Su Ryeon in this state, but before she could react, Su Ryeon started to tug her nearer to the cliff, and she shrieks in shock. "Seo Jin, please! Don't do this!" That is the last thing Su Ryeon yells before leaning towards the edge, and letting go of Seo Jin's arms. Moments later, she has fallen into the waters below, causing a large splash. Seo Jin eyes the water in terror as she hears Eun Byeol shout from above, patently terrified by the scene. Logan, too, is shocked, and he skids down the cliff he and Eun Byeol were watching the fight on almost immediately, before dashing to the edge of the cliff, where Seo Jin was being taken away by the police.

"Su Ryeon Ssi!" He yells as the police tried to hold him back, but he is quick to shake them off, before leaping off the cliff and into the waters below. He dives straight down with rapid speed, opening his eyes ever so slightly to look around, and he soon spots Su Ryeon, unconscious in the water. He is quick to swim back to the surface, catching a breath before diving back down again. Once he spots her, he swims straight towards her, wrapping his arms around her waist once he reaches her side. 'You can't die here, Su Ryeon Ssi. I would sacrifice everything, if it meant you'd stay safe.' is what Logan repeats in his mind as he starts to kick with all his might, eyeing the dim light that's coming from the surface. They're a long way down, and his legs were already starting to ache, but he couldn't give up, not now, not ever. He had to make sure Su Ryeon made it out alive, no matter what. It took a long while, but after a few minutes, they were back at the surface, Logan gasping for breath the moment he got out of the water. He felt like he was about to pass out, but he continued to swim towards the nearest land he could see, yelling for help as he did. The search party's attention was quickly drawn to the two, and they immediately started to make their way down the cliff. Logan finally reaches land, and he sets Su Ryeon onto the rocky ground before promptly performing CPR. It takes a few minutes for the search party to reach them, but surely enough, when they do, Su Ryeon coughs up loads of water, and relief makes its way onto Logan's face.

—————

Su Ryeon's eyes open ever so slowly as she squints at the bright light illuminating this very room. She rubs her eyes before sitting up, but she pauses when she notices Logan not too far from her, who has fallen asleep on the edge of the bed. She chuckles lightly at the sight, but then Logan shifts, before eventually sitting up and rubbing his eyes too. Once he opens them, he immediately glances her way.

"Su Ryeon Ssi..?" He whispers, and Su Ryeon smiles subtly at him.

"Logan." She says, as Logan continues to stare.

"Thank goodness you're awake," He mumbles after a moment. "Do you have any idea how worried I was...? Why didn't you bring the life jacket and the tracking device? If I hadn't trusted my instincts and jumped down to save you, you would've died, Su Ryeon Ssi!" He sputters out, and the worry is evident in his voice.

"I know." Su Ryeon replies calmly, perhaps a tad too calmly, if Logan's incredulous reply is anything to go by.

"You knew?!" Logan sputters again, before sighing. "Su Ryeon Ssi, what were you thinking?!" Logan flails his arms about, worried.

"I'm sorry." Su Ryeon smiled a sad smile, and her apology only made Logan stare at her. "I really was foolish to have caused you all such great worry." She blames herself.

"Su Ryeon Ssi, for the last time..." Logan trails off, before regaining his composure. "It's not your fault, so will you please... stop blaming yourself...?"

"Oh, but it is." Su Ryeon continues to smile as she says this. "If it weren't for me being so adamant on seeking vengeance, then... Ae Gyo, Yoon Hee, and Yoon Chul... They wouldn't have died." She can feel the tears burning at her eyes as she mentions the three, the three who were by her side, the three who she had killed thanks to her stupid idea of seeking revenge for her fallen daughter, Min Seol-A.

"Su Ryeon Ssi..." Logan mumbles, as tears make their way down his cheeks. "That wasn't your fault, you had no control over it." He tries to assure her, but she only continues to stare blankly at the snow-white blanket before her. "I'm sorry, too."

"What?" Su Ryeon almost immediately mumbles, and Logan sighs. What was he apologizing for?

"I'm sorry... for all I did as... Gu Ho Dong." Logan says under his breath, and Su Ryeon seems to mutter a near inaudible 'Ah'. "I shouldn't have pressured you in that way, I'm sure it made you feel really insecure." Logan reaches out to caress her hand, and she finally stops fiddling with the blanket. "I was just... desperate. So, so... desperate."

"I understand, you were just trying to avenge your sister who's mother didn't even know she existed." Su Ryeon blames herself again. "I should've died there, Logan. I should've died."

"What...?" Logan mutters in disbelief, and Su Ryeon's lips purse.

"How can I possibly live a happy life knowing I killed so many people thanks to my revenge...?" Su Ryeon lets out a huff, and a long silence engulfs the two, before Logan finally decides to break it.

"Do you remember Seol-A's last request for me?" Logan asks, and Su Ryeon almost seems surprised by the sudden question, but she chooses not to respond. "It was to make you happy." Logan smiles subtly, but Su Ryeon continues to avoid eye contact, and so he continues. "I'm sure Seol-A wouldn't like to see her own mother grieving and blaming herself for her death."

"...Right." Su Ryeon mumbles under her breath, but it is audible to Logan.

"If Seol-A wanted me to make you happy, then I will." Logan reaches out to caress her cheeks instead, and Su Ryeon finally turns to face him. "We'll start off fresh from here, alright?"

"...Alright." Su Ryeon chuckles lightly as Logan wipes her tears away, before leaning into his comforting touch. "I love you, Logan. I love so, so much."

"I love you too, Su Ryeon."
