Work Text:

Day 1 - Soulmates / Symbolism

Mizuki was confused, to say the least.

I mean, after that whole ordeal with Mafuyu in that… ‘SEKAI’ (Mizuki was still processing that bit.) The last thing they should be worried was about why in hell’s name flowers stopped sprouting from their body. Well… Not that they were complaining, it meant less of a mess to clean up.

Mizuki spun around in ther chair, biting their lip.

Kalmias. They meant; “perseverance” Mizuki didn’t know anyone who liked kalmias… Though they did know someone who fit that description. They shook their head, brushing it off and trying to retrace back to when their flowers stopped growing.

…Probably the day after they first arrived in SEKAI. “Don’t tell me Kanade, Mafuyu or Ena is my soulmate…” They groaned. They weren’t exactly opposed to either of the three being their soulmate but for them, it felt too soon to meet the one whom they were fated too. Way too soon.

Mizuki did enjoy reading shoujo manga from time to time but they never really thought about their own love life until now. And they’d rather not think about it for a while. They’d miss the tingling sensation they’d feel whenever a flower was about to sprout, though no more flowers meant no more messes to clean up and it was certainly less inconvenient, they still couldn’t help but panic a bit at the thought that “oh my soulmate is someone I’ve known for two years and I just met them in person like two days ago!”

Mizuki stared at the kalmias in the basket on their desk; “Welp, no use agonizing over this… I’ll try and forget about it, I guess - I have an MV to work on!” Mizuki said aloud to themself, spinning their char back to face their desk to get back to work.

Ena. Was. Panicking. She had finally fully processed that “ohmygodimetmysoulmateinaworldcreatedbyhatsunemikuandyuki’sfeelings.”

…Yeah so it definitely wasn’t coherent in the slightest. But Ena, being Ena - was pacing back and forth in her room trying to figure this out.

Balsams - “Impatient for Love” Didn’t help her much. Why was she agonizing over what the flower meant anyways? It’s not like it was important for this since it was just someone’s favourite flower.

…And that someone was Kanade, Mafuyu or Mizuki. Yeah, no way in hell it was Mizuki. They were annoying, and stubborn and loud but they were the first person to really see and appreciate her art— Ena wasn’t opposed to it being Kanade but she viewed the girl more as a sister than anything.

…Ena would kill herself if Mafuyu was her soulmate.

Okay that was a bit of a stretch but Ena hated Mafuyu (no she didn’t), she’d rather the girl not be her soulmate. Besides… Mafuyu definitely wasn’t ready for any kind of relationship.

She heard a “ding!” from her phone, snapping her out of her panic, she immediately went to check it, expecting either a comment about her latest selfie or maybe, just maybe, someone saw her art—

amia!!🎀:

Oh. It was just Mizuki. Ena deflated.

amia!!🎀:

Ena smiled to herself. As annoying as Mizuki was they were kind too.

amia!!🎀:
don’t be late~!

Ena’s smile grew slightly as she set her phone down on her desk and went to her closet to pick out clothes. Something made her want to look good, or at least presentable. It’s not like the two were doing anything fancy - it was probably because this was Ena’s first time really meeting Mizuki in person since they went to that family diner with Kanade and Mafuyu.

Finally finding and changing into clothes that weren’t her pajamas, Ena grabbed her phone off her desk and headed out of her room and out of her house, eager to meet up with Mizuki.

“Hihi, Ena~! Yooo, you sure dressed to impress!”

“Hey! These are casual clothes! I could say the same about you!”

“Hmm? Guess I did… Though this isn’t anything too fancy!”

“Yeah, my clothes aren’t too fancy either.” Ena crossed her arms, rolling her eyes. To think she was excited for this… She’d momentarily forgotten how insufferable Mizuki was, it seems.

“Let’s go? Light’s gonna turn green any second!”

“Sure. Lead the way, Mizuki.” Mizuki nodded, weaving through the sea of people, gesturing for Ena to follow them.

Making conversation with Mizuki was surprisingly easy, given that they'd only just officially met in person recently. They were easy to talk to as the two shared the same interests and there wasn't any awkward tension at all.

"Tadaaa~! Here!"

"Oh, didn't this mall open up recently?"

"Yup! It's pretty new!" The two enter the mall, beginning to walk around and look at the varieties of stores.

"Ahhh, blue or pink, whaddya think, Ena??"

"I think you should hurry up! I have things I want to look at too."

"Jeez, so mean!! And to think I was gonna pay for some of the things you wanted!"

"You were? Or are you just saying that to trick me!?"

"Nono, I'm serious Enanan~! Hehe~"

"Oh… thank you. Anyways, why don't you just get both?" Ena feels warmth spread through her chest.

"Y'know what? Sure…" They take both skirts and put them into their back, walking over to the front counter to pay for their things, Ena followed after, carrying her own bag of clothing.

"There's a flower shop I wanted to go to, actually."

"Flowers? You gonna get a bouquet? Is it for a special someone~?"

"No! I just want to pick out a couple flowers is all!"

"Right, right, suuure~!"

"You're so insufferable! They aren't for anyone!"

"Woah, so prickly Ena!"

"Shut up! And to think I was excited for this! Hmph." Ena had a headache. Though she tilted her head as Mizuki's expression changed to one of slight surprise.

"You were excited?"

"Duh, no shit. Of course I was! You're fun to talk to 'n' stuff. Besides, I like shopping."

"I am? Hehe, so Ena secretly is a softy~!"

"What the hell!? I was complimenting you! You—"

"So lead the way to the flower shop~!"

"I hate you." (She did not), Ena grumbled to herself about how annoying Mizuki was whilst leading them to the store.

"Yoooo, it smells great in here!"

"Well it is a flower store…"

"Uh-huh! What flowers are ya lookin' for?"

"Balsams." Not like Ena needed them, she had plenty.

"Hey, those are my favourite flowers~! Awh, were you thinking of me~? Weird because you couldn't have known what my favorite flowers were—" Ena flushed.

"I was not!" …Wait. Mizuki's favourite flowers were balsams? Oh fuck. Oh shit. There was NO way that Mizuki was her soulmate! No way at all, nuh-uh! Ena wouldn't accept i—

"Yo, uh… Earth to Enanan~? You there?" They snap their fingers in front of her face.

"Hah? Yeah-! Get your hand out of my face!"

"Sorry, sorry! You just spaced out for a sec and you were staring at me! Am I just that cute~?"

"Can you be quiet for one second?!" Ena groaned, holding her head in her hands. Mizuki is by definition, very cute. Ena would never admit that though. She trailed through the aisles, running her fingers across the pots with Mizuki trailing close behind. Ena walked up to the front counter, drumming her fingers on the wood,

“Can I help you?” The cashier asked.

“Uh… Yeah, I was wondering if you had any balsams here.” The cashier nodded,

“Yeah, we do! Right this way.” He gestured for Ena to follow him, leading her to an aisle at the far end of the store. Ena looked behind her to see if Mizuki was till there but they had disappeared. Ena was about to excuse herself to look for them but she just shrugged it off, opting to find them later. “Here they are!”

“Thank you!” Ena smiled at te cashier as he took out a pair of shears.

“How many do you want?”

“Four maybe?” She responded, playing with the hem of her skirt. He nodded, clipping the stems of four of the flowers and tying them together with a twist tie.

“Here you are.” The cashier held them out to her and Ena nodded, accepting the flowers and thanking him as he headed back to the counter. She turned them over in her hand examining them. Ena, for one, didn’t know why she wanted to buy balsams as she had too many already. She remembered Mizuki mentioning that these flowers were their favourite just moments ago. Ena grimaced, no way would she be fated to Mizuki.

Mizuki trailed through the aisles of the store, scanning for kalmias. They were all Mizuki could think about today. Because being them, and being an overthinker, their mind was still stuck on the whole “flowers are no longer sprouting from my body” thing. It’d be hard to get used to as they’d had it happening for essentially their whole life.

Finally spotting the kalmias, Mizuki called over the cashier to help them pick some out. Choosing to take four. They’d probably add the flowers to the basket they had. They were a very pretty color - their favourite, pink. Ena mentioned getting balsams - their favourite flower. Could Ena be…? No. Mizuki shook their head, taking the flowers from the cashier. It was probably a coincidence. There’s no way Ena was their soulmate.

…Right?

Mizuki headed to the front counter, where Ena was waiting for them, holding four balsams tied together in her hands. “What’d you get?” She asked, graze falling to their hand. Mizuki held the flowers up for Ena to see.

“Kalmias!” Mizuki replied, rocking on their feet. Ena pursed her lips, opening her mouth as if wanting to say something, however she opted to close it again,

“Cool.” Ena responded, turning her gaze away from Mizuki. They raised an eyebrow, tilting their head.

“You okay, Ena?”

“Uh-huh.” She seemed lost in thought. So much so that she didn’t notice that it was their turn in line. Mizuki elbowed Ena (“Ow! Hey!” She’d cried out), gesturing for her to place her flowers on the counter as they fumbled for their wallet, sliding the proper amount of money over to the cashier, as Ena did the same. (Ena had insisted that she pay for her own flowers.)

“Balsams are really pretty~” Mizuki said as the two walked out of the shop.

“Yeah… they are-!” Ena still seemed lost in thought. Mizuki frowned. “I think we could call it a day here?” She suggested.

“Uh-huh… Sure, lets!” Mizuki’s frown only deepened, trying to ignore the small pang of the slightest hurt they felt blossom in their chest.

“Mizuki, this was nice—” Ena starts.

“Ah, hold on…” Mizuki pulls unties the kalmias, taking Ena’s hand and opening her hand and placing three of them in her palm, then they took the fourth one and placed it in Ena’s hair, smiling at her. “My gift… to you! Thanks for this, Enanan~!”

And Ena couldn’t ignore the small tingle she felt when Mizuki placed the flowers in her hands, she touched her hair, a slight smile appearing on her face and the faint pink dusting her cheeks. She sighed fondy, placing the four balsams in Mizuiki’s hand, watching as their eyes widened slightly. “And these are for you.” Ena’s eyes lit up as she saw the pink dusting Mizuki’s cheeks as well.

“Thank you…?” They responded, blinking a bit.

“You said they were your favourite, no? Kalmias are mine so I’m just returning the favor.” Ena closed her hand around the flowers Mizuki had given her, walking up to them and taking her hand, brushing her lips on their knuckles. Yeah, Ena had the slightest gut feeling that she was fated to Mizuki.

Mizuki was too stunned to speak, they opened their mouth and then closed it again as Ena stepped back, finally saying; “Let’s do this again someday….”

“Let’s!” Ena nodded, waving at them as she walked away. Mizuki just stood their frozen for about five minutes before the smiled (a smile that didn’t reach their eyes) to themself, closing their hands around the balsams they were gifted.

Ena would proceed to keep the flower in her hair for the rest of the day before she placed it in a vase with the other three.

While Mizuki placed the flowers Ena had gifted them in a vase next to the kalmias on their desk.

They’d both meet up again like that someday soon.
