Chapter Text
Castiel was in the park, sitting on the grass, watching Demon running around freely. His dog was happy, tail wagging fastly, and barking at the birds that crossed its path.
The original plan had been to take a quick walk but the weather had been too nice, sunny but with a bit of cold wind, just how Castiel liked it.
He had been in a good mood, the start of summer was getting to him, so he’d decided to let Demon play, and let his mind wander around.
Castiel had never been optimistic, he’d never really had a reason to be. For once though, things were looking good and he was almost… Excited? He’d registered for college, which was something he had not planned to do but Lysander’s departure to his parent’s farm had changed his perspective. After a few long talks with his best-friend, he had decided to major in music.
Lysander had also introduced him to a few of his friends. Zack, Leo, and Gabin were talented, fun. They worked well together whenever they jammed so Castiel had talked them into forming a band. Crowstorm. It was different from his duo with Lysander but he liked the dynamic they had.
Then, there was Candy, of course. With the holidays, they were finally able to spend some quality time together, and Castiel was looking forward to all the things they would get to do.
They had just celebrated their six months anniversary and Castiel was pretty sure that he was in love with her.
He had known for a while, given what he’d accepted to do for her, given how jealous he became whenever boys tended to flirt with her, given how worried and scared he was whenever she was doing something that could potentially put her in danger. He had ignored it though, not wanting to jump to conclusions, afraid to say the words even if he’d written songs after songs for her. The words were always coming to him so easily when it came to her.
He was in love and he wasn’t even afraid anymore.
Demon came back to him, panting, pulling him out of his thoughts. He got up, shaking his head fondly. He had gotten the message : it was time to go back home. He put back the leash on Demon, which immediately made him think about Candy, and the pink leash she’d bought him. It made him smile, really, only she could get ideas like that and be able to get away with it.
When he reached his apartment building, he typed in the code to open the door.
He was surprised when Demon started running up the stairs and he rushed to follow his dog.
Once they reached his floor, he was struggling to breathe, and ready to yell at his dog.
He stopped dead on his track, a hand on his knee, trying to catch his breath. Demon was already cuddling with Candy, who was sitting on the stairs.
“Little girl?”
She was petting Demon slowly and looked up when she heard his voice. He immediately noticed her red eyes.
“Hey,” she whispered, her voice so small it scared him.
“What’s going on?” He asked “Are you hurt? What happened?”
“We need to talk,” she said. “Can we go in?”
He swallowed. We need to talk. These words were never good, were they? His heart started beating faster and his hand was shaking as he put his key in the lock.
Together, they walked into his parent’s apartment. Demon went to the kitchen to get some water while Candy and Castiel were going to the living room.
“Do you want something to drink?” He asked.
“No,” she said, shaking her head. “Come sit next to me, please.” He obeyed. He found that his mouth was dry. “My dad got transferred,” she explained. “We’re moving.”
“When?”
“End of summer.”
“Oh.”
She grabbed his hand while his thoughts started going everywhere. Moving. What did it mean? Did it mean that they would break up? Was he really about to lose her because of the distance?
“I tried to… I got mad. I don’t want to leave. I got into a fight with my parents so… I just grabbed a bag and came up here,” she said.
“You’re always welcome here, you know that.”
She squeezed his hand and kissed his cheek softly.
“I know,” she whispered. “Thank you.”
“What does it mean for us? You moving?” He asked.
“I don’t know. I want us to stay together,” she admitted. “I guess it will depend on you.”
“That’s what I want too, I love you too much to let distance break us off.”
He quickly looked away and refrained from cursing out loud. He had not told her yet, at least not directly, and this had to be the worst way possible to do it.
She put a hand on his cheek and made him look at her.
“I love you too, Cas,” She said softly. “And if it’s any consolation, I already knew.”
“How?”
“Come on, the song you wrote me pretty much said it, didn’t it?”
“I guess it did,” he smirked. “Have you told your parents you’re here?”
“No,” she muttered. “I guess they know.”
“Okay. How about this? Pick a movie you want to watch, I’ll call your mom to let her know you’re staying here, and then we’ll cuddle.”
“Such a rebel,” she teased.
“I don’t want you to get grounded. Not now,” Castiel explained. “Plus, we might need your parents’ approval in the future so I’d rather stay in their good book.”
“Fine, you win. Do I get to pick any movie?”
“Any movie you want.”
“So you won’t complain even if I pick a rom-com?”
“I’ll watch it, I never said I wouldn’t complain though,” he winked.
He kissed her lips quickly and got up. His hands were slightly shaking. He took a deep breath to calm himself. They would be okay. He would not lose her. They could do this. They would do this. Right? Right.
Once he got to the kitchen, he pulled out his phone from his pocket, and dialed Lucia’s number.
“Castiel,” she said on the other side of the line, her voice betraying her panic. “I was about to call you. Have you seen Candy?”
“Hi, Lucia. Yes, that’s why I’m calling. She’s with me.”
“Thank God,” Lucia sighed. “I guessed as much but I was worried.”
“I understand. Look, she’s… I think she needs some time, she’ll probably stay here tonight.”
“Of course… Castiel? Can you tell her… Tell her she can take her time, all we ask is that she lets us know when she’s ready to come back home, okay?”
“Will do. Have a good evening.”
“You too.”
He hung up and smiled as he felt some of the tension leaving his body. It was funny, in a way, to realize that only a few months ago, her parents had done everything in their power to prevent them from being together, grounding her for sneaking out, and now here Castiel was, calling her mom and simply announcing that she was staying the night, not even asking for permission, and it was fine.
Castiel had managed to get them to trust him. Who would have thought, really?
He walked back to the living room and groaned when he realized she had, in fact, picked a rom-com for them to watch.
Demon was on the couch with Candy, his head and front paws on her thighs as she scratched him behind the ears.
He joined them and sat next to her.
“You did say I could pick the movie,” she smiled.
“Did you really have to pick that?” He complained.
“Yes, now stop talking and cuddle me.”
“Fine.”
She pressed play and he put his arm around her shoulders, bringing her to him. Demon whined when he felt her move but after some rearrangement, they found a comfortable position and the dog settled down.
Castiel tried not to think about the fact that he would miss her when she’d leave. They still had a bit of time and he was set on enjoying every single moment with her.
They would be fine, he reminded himself. They could do this.
