Chapter Text

Luke has been visiting the same Devildom bookstore every week. It was a massive building, so it was no wonder that one day, Luke would discover one of the brothers there.

There stood Leviathan, the third brother and avatar of envy.

“Hey Luke, I didn't expect to see you here,” greeted Levi while holding a metric ton of books and manga. Luke grumbled at his presence, he was never really fond of demons, though, out of all the demons, Leviathan was one of the kinder ones.

“Oh, hello Leviathan…” muttered Luke, curious and slightly worried about Leviathan’s back. “I'm just browsing, but I'm not really finding anything interesting.” Luke pouted, he enjoyed reading, but these last few weeks he's been having trouble finding anything he would enjoy.

Luke could swear he saw Leviathan’s eye light up at this. Leviathan dropped the books he was holding, and gripped Luke’s shoulder, staring straight at him with the most terrifying look.

“Would you like some recommendations?!” Leviathan practically yelled out. Luke was terrified of the way the demon was hyperventilating.

“Yes, but only if you calm down!”

They both sat down at a small table near the windows of the bookstore. Luke could barely see Leviathan since, apparently, Levi brought an entire section of the store to their table.

“So Luke, any genre you like? Children’s? Comedy? Maybe you’ll do something like ‘the journal of a wimpy demon’” Levi pulled out the aforementioned book, it looked very juvenile.

“I’m not a kid!” Luke interrupted.

Leviathan tosses out the book. “All right! Not a fan, I get it. I'm not a big fan of those books, too childish for me-”

Luke stared at Leviathan as in trying to say “Hurry up!”

“R-right, maybe you'll like something like… This!” Leviathan pulled out the dustiest and most dull book Luke has ever seen in his entire life.

“This one’s called ‘Humility and Justice’, Satan is a huge fan of this book. I’ve read the first chapters but I kinda got bored. Not enough action for my taste.” Leviathan struggled to raise the book, it had so many pages, Luke could swear that only someone immortal like Solomon could finish that.

“I’ll… pass…”

Their exchanges went on for hours. Leviathan felt like he had found the final boss of a video game. He had absolutely no idea what Luke wanted. At this point, he should just ask Simeon to write something completely original. That was until he pulled out one specific book.

“Whoa, what’s this one?” Luke questioned as he held up a book he had taken from the pile.

“Oh, that’s actually a favorite of mine. ‘Detective Hera’. It’s about a young girl who becomes a detective. I’ve read all the books, I’ve gone to all the book signings, I’ve even met the author in person! It’s such a good series, it’s a shame that it’s so short. You’ll love it! Though it doesn’t get good until chapter thirty-two-“

Leviathan had realized he was talking to himself, Luke had already left.

Luke laid on his bed, reading chapter to chapter. He couldn’t get enough of it. It was comedic, it was heartwarming, it was tear jerking. Levi was right, the book was amazing. Nothing could peel him away from it. The way Hera wouldn’t give up no matter how tough the case, it was inspiring for Luke. It was exactly what Luke had been wanting.

A knock came from his door.

“We have to head to the house of Lamentation, do you remember? We got invited by MC and the brothers.”

It was Simeon, reminding Luke about the small party they were throwing to celebrate MC’s birthday. And he almost forgot it. He quickly scrambled to the ground and put on his hat and shoes.

The party was very lively. You could tell all the guests were enjoying it. Luke was talking to Solomon near the gift table.

“I have to hand it to Asmo, he does know how to throw a party.” Solomon smiled.

“Oh, what did you get for MC?” Luke questioned

“I made them a batch of cookies!”

“Right…” Luke couldn’t think of a worse gift Solomon could’ve made. He really should’ve just stuck with the easier stuff.

“Oh, by the way, would you like some juice? The brothers helped prepare it. It’s very delicious.” Solomon asked.

“That would be great! Thanks.”

Solomon nodded as he headed to the kitchen.

It wasn’t even two seconds after that interaction when all of the sudden everyone heard a blood curdling scream coming from the kitchen.
