Work Text:
Momo rolled over, stretching her arms up over her head and her toes down and away from her, feeling the weight of sleep in her bones slowly start to melt away.
“Too early,” her girlfriend grumbled, snuggling deeper into the bed. “Shh.”
“I didn’t say a word!” Momo chuckled back, rolling to snuggle into her lover’s back with a contented sigh. “Besides, it’s after 9am.”
“But we have a day off. Together. Why can’t I sleep in?”
“You can sleep in if you want, Kyoka darling,” Momo hummed, “or we can get out of bed and spend the rest of the day doing all those things that you told me you wanted to be doing last weekend, and the one before that, but couldn't do because we were on work study.”
“Temptress.” Jirou rolled over slowly, looking at Momo with eyes still filled with sleep, leaning forwards to press a kiss to the end of her nose.
“I will do whatever you want today, Kyoka,” Momo smiled. “And if that’s staying in bed all day…well I’m not certain that I would be inclined or able to resist.”
“No,” Jirou said, starting to wake up a little bit more. “No, I want to get off this campus if I can, go out and do something that doesn’t involve watching the boys bicker or staring out of the dorm windows wondering when Mei’s going to blow something up next.”
“Then we need to get up,” Momo pulled Jirou in closer, for a long slow kiss that made them both question that desire. “We can get the train and go for breakfast, then maybe to the record shop?”
“And the tea shop.”
“That would be lovely.”
“You’re lovely.”
With a burst of giggles they pulled themselves out of bed, stretching and shaking away the remaining dregs of sleep, padding towards the bathroom to shower and prepare for the day that they were already planning out in their minds.
They had both known, when they had joined UA to become heroes, that it would be a lot of work. Long hours in class, homework that would take up almost all of their time outside of classes. Sparring and training camps, work study and internships, it all added up to more hours than most of them had in a day, so there were very few days off to be found.
But Momo and Jirou had pushed to ensure that it could happen, just one day that they could spend together doing anything they wanted without villains or schoolwork or anything else hanging over them. It had required a few especially long nights to get ahead on their assignments, but they knew it would be worth it.
They showered together, washing one another’s hair in a routine that they had fallen into almost as soon as they moved into one dorm, gaining special permission from Cementos to take down the wall that used to separate them. They dressed whilst talking about where to have lunch, walking out of the dorms towards the station by 10am with springs in their respective steps, certain that they were going to have a good day.
The first few hours, at least, went as planned.
They went for breakfast in a little french bistro that Momo adored, sipping tea and sharing a platter of pasties whilst the world passed them by. It felt so good to just sit and relax, not having to think about a single thing other than the time that they were passing together. Once they had eaten their fill it was time to move on, walking hand and hand through bustling streets to the record store that Jirou used to visit with her father on the weekends, to look through the new and rare vinyl that they had in stock, catch up on the gossip from the music world, and check in for news from home that her parents might not want to give her. She was glad that the old rocker was a gossip, and always happy to spare a little time for the kid who had ridden on his shoulders for more than a few concerts.
Time passed them by in the easy calm bubble that their day off gifted them, from record shop to tea shop, picking up a new black tea with cranberry and rose that smelled so good Momo was determined not to leave it behind. It was perfect.
Too perfect.
“Help!”
Their heads both snapped up at the same time, the call loud enough that they didn’t need Jirou’s super hearing to know that someone was calling.
“We’re off,” Momo said slowly, we don’t need to-”
“Of course we need to,” Jirou said, rolling her eyes. “Race you to the scene.”
They ran fast, slipping into the headspace of a hero as soon as they heard the call. The woman was only a few streets away, standing in a struggle with a man in a mask who was tugging at her bag.
“Let go, you brute!”
“Hey!” Jirou shouted, “Stop!”
The man and the woman jumped at once, and in the commotion the woman was the first to loosen her grip, giving the man all the time he needed to turn and bolt.
“I’ll cover here, you go after him,” Momo said, approaching the woman with her palms up, showing that she meant no harm, producing a small communications radio from her forearm. “Miss I’m going to radio for backup, but I need you to tell me what happened-”
Jirou didn’t wait long, darting after the man who was making headway through the busy streets, but not fast enough. She was glad that he didn’t have a speed based quirk or she would never have caught up with him, but after a short sprint she was close enough to lash out, sending one of her jacks flying to catch the man in the back of the knee. It wasn’t much, but it was enough to trip him, sending him tumbling down and onto the ground where she could hold him.
“Get off me bitch ,” he hissed, trying to push her away but struggling against the young hero’s strength.
“No can do, you’re not getting away with snatching a bag in broad daylight.”
“How the hell are you so strong? ”
“That’s what you get for messing with a hero,” Jirou smiled, keeping one of her jacks square between his shoulder blades to stop him from moving. “Now why were you trying to take the bag?”
“None of your business.”
She pressed harder. “Wrong answer.”
Unfortunately she didn’t have time for more answers, Momo came walking up behind her with a local policeman by her side, and regardless of how much she wanted to know what was going on she had to do what was right. Had to comply with the rules of the provisional licence she’d earned.
“Well look who it is,” the detective said, kneeling down to put a pair of cuffs around the man’s wrists. Jirou noticed that they weren’t quirk cancelling. “I said I would have to write you up the next time.”
“Get on and do it, then,” the man grumbled into the floor. “Life’s no better out here than in there.”
“Thank you for your service ladies. You’re a credit to UA.”
“All in a day’s work, Officer,” Momo said, giving him a low bow. “Are we free to go on with our afternoon?”
They were, and almost as quickly as the issue had started it was over, they were back to being hand in hand walking through bustling streets as though nothing had ever happened.
“How about,” Jirou said, stopping their walk, “we take the long way home. Walk that mountain trail up to the shrine? It might be a bit more relaxing than waiting to stop another robbery?”
“We could pull together a picnic,” Momo nodded. “Just something small.”
“Perfect.”
With the supplies they needed in a basket that Momo created they were back on the train and heading almost in the direction of home. Up a trail that wound around a mountain, breathing in the clean fresh air, taking in sights that they both wished they could enjoy more often. At a high lookout point Momo made them a hammock, stringing it between two trees so that they could lay with their food, could look at the skies and dream about their future together.
“You know,” Jirou said, leaning into Momo’s shoulder with a smile. “It might not quite have gone to plan-”
Momo leaned back, knowing what her girlfriend was going to say before the words left her lips. “But it was still a pretty perfect day.”
