Chapter 1: Farewell, My Turnabout ~ Bad End

Chapter Text

It was the trial, State V. Matt Engarde, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Firstly, Maya Fey, Phoenix’s assistant, was kidnapped in exchange for Matt Engarde’s not-guilty verdict. Secondly, a known assassin can, and probably will, kill Maya if he doesn’t get that not-guilty verdict. Thridy, all the evidence points to Matt being the true culprit, heck, he admitted it himself! Thankfully, it’s recess time, thirty minutes, to be exact. Gumshoe told Wright that De Killer, the assassin, left evidence that is the only ray of hope in this situation. However, Gumshoe seems to have gone too fast on the road, and crashed. Thankfully, Franziska von Karma, youngest daughter of Manfred von Karma, planted a tracker on Gumshoe’s person. All he can hope is that Gumshoe is relatively unscathed, and can hand the evidence over.

“Edgeworth…”, Phoenix said, clutching his left elbow with his right hand

“What is it?”, Edgeworth asked, obviously pressing for more details.

“I don’t have the right to judge anyone again…”, Phoenix’s eyes seemingly affixed to the ground. Edgeworth simply stayed silent. “ I know my client is guilty. But what I'm doing now... I'm pinning the guilt onto someone totally innocent, and using the evidence to do so... ... It might be my turn to say, ‘Defense Attorney Phoenix Wright chooses death’...”

“Wright.” Edgeworth said sternly, “It doesn’t suit someone like you to cry useless tears,” Phoenix wanted to cry ‘ Objection! I’m not crying!’, but now is not the time. “ Whether you did your job well or not…” Edgeworth extended a hand, taking Phoenix’s hand in his, “That can only be seen after the verdict has been decided.”

Unfortunately, the bailiff’s raspy voice, ragged from years of yelling, cut the intimate moment between ‘friends’, most likely for the handwriting analysis of Celeste Inpax’s suicide letter. For the remaining time in recess, Phoenix stays balled up on the black-leather couch in the defendants chambers, trying to not cry for the rest of the time.
