Kuwabara was… interesting

Summary:

Kurama's thoughts on Kuwabara and how he fits into their group. Set anytime after the Makai tournament.

One-Shot

Notes:

In the same universe as my other fics, Oversight and Thank you, Alpha. Reading those will help you get the context of this one but it can stand alone.

This puts heavy emphasis on Kurama's fox instincts and how leashs (fox groups) work. This uses the more human take on the meaning of Omega.

Unbeta'd, please forgive or point out any mistakes.

Work Text:

Kuwabara was… interesting. When Kurama had first encountered the loud unruly human that held his alpha’s undivided attention he admittedly was a little jealous and on edge. Had it been wrong to appoint himself beta? Was this human Yusuke’s beta? After seeing them interact Kurama had been reassured. Surely, this male was no more than a whiner. A leash member that was too old to be a pup but not dominate enough to amount to anything more than tailing the alpha.

As they continued their journey it was clear that he was not a whiner. Yusuke cared too much, relied on him too much. The kitsune even had to reevaluate his dominance. He wasn’t as dominate as the alpha and surely not as dominate as himself but he had enough that he would push at the right moments. Yet, Yusuke was not threatened and Kuwabara was allowed to claim a female and even make decisions.

He was strong and steady. A presence that was calmed them all and made the leash thrive even with many hot headed and dominate males. He was so loyal and so sincere that Kurama was put at ease. The human would never challenge for dominance. For all his big talk and bravado he knew his place was not to lead. Yet, he often made all the difference in battle and within their group.

The kitsune was confident that Kuwabara was, in fact, an actual omega. Not in the way wolves had their omegas. Low, weak, the last to eat and the last to drink. Rather a confident and capable male that does not seek approval or abide by type of social hierarchy. He had very rarely seen a true omega in a leash before. They were precious and thrived on the function and authority of the leash using it to their advantage.

Kuwabara would have never fit into any normal social group and Kurama was certain that if he and Yusuke had not been so close the human would have ended up a loner. Even his human friends would have eventually left him as their need for an alpha surpassed their devotion for the omega. Kuwabara was too much like a cat. He would have thrived in his loneliness. Maybe not as driven or motivated as he was now that he had a leash to aide him but he would have been fine.

The kitsune envied his human leash-mate. Kuwabara would never have to go through life questioning his dominance and making the wrong decisions over and over as an improper alpha and dreading his loneliness without any leash. He also pitied him because the human would never truly know how wonderful it was to finally find a place in the leash. He would love their group and thrive but he would never need them as much as they needed him. He was forever going to be independent and one step outside of the intimacy a leash shares.

Looking over to the subject of his thoughts, Kurama was pleased. For this unique creature, this independent omega to choose their leash was a great honor. It was rare enough to come across an omega but it was even rarer to find one so integrated into a leash. Kuwabara would spend his human life with a wonderful group of friends and a wife that loved him. If every other person thought of him as an omega leash-mate and his future wife as a vixen then he never needed to know.
