Work Text:

“We are not naming our daughter Mia,” Ena said firmly. Sitting on the new brown couch, she put her hands on her hips and huffed. Mizuki, who was sitting next to her, groaned with a pout and then leaned onto Ena’s shoulder.

“Pleaaase! It’s such a cute name!” Mizuki whined. Ena whipped her head around.

“There’s no way I’m letting our daughter be named after an anime girl!” she yelled, her face turning redder by the second.

Ena was currently pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl, and she and Mizuki were very excited to become mothers.

For their son, a name had come easily enough. His name would be Hajime, meaning celebration, since they’d wished so hard to bring him into the world. They were stuck on what to name their daughter, though, so they’d been having the same argument for a few days.

“Mia is the best! Don’t you want our daughter to have a respectable name?” Mizuki cried, peering over at Ena.

“What’s respectable about naming a real human being after a fictional character?!” Ena barked back.

“Think of it like this!” Mizuki began, pointing her index finger and wiggling it in Ena’s face. “If I’d never watched Miracle Magic Girl Lala , the algorithm wouldn’t have recommended Kanade’s music, I never would’ve seen your art, and we never would’ve met! The twins exist because of Mia!”

“That is such a stretch!” Ena groaned, grabbing Mizuki’s hand and putting it on her lap. She then scoffed. “For that, we should just name our daughter Kanade!”

“It’d be confusing if we named our daughter Kanade,” Mizuki grumbled, her cheeks all puffed up.

“Why do you even like Mia so much?” Ena asked with a weary sigh. Now she was the one to lean into Mizuki. She looked up at her with curious eyes.

“Well… She was originally an antagonist, but was accepted by the good guys,” Mizuki explained, her voice mellowing out. “Something about that feels… Admirable isn't the right word… I guess it's reassuring? Like, even if the world rejects you, someone will find you and love you.”

She was no longer looking at Ena, but rather gazing off into the distance with a wistful look in her eyes. Ena frowned.

“Mizuki…”

Mizuki turned back to face Ena and gave her a pained smile.

“I guess she’s kinda like me, huh?”

Ena’s eyebrows furrowed, her expression somewhere between shock and sadness.

“You never did anything wrong, Mizuki,” Ena said ruefully. She put a hand on Mizuki’s cheek.

“People used to make me feel that way, though,” Mizuki replied, letting out a wry laugh.

“Well, they don’t matter and, you’re right, now you have me!” Ena refuted with a huff, crossing her arms and pouting. Mizuki laughed again, a chuckle, but this time with joy. Ena smiled softly, then grabbed Mizuki’s hand and put it over her bump.

“Now you have us,” Ena whispered. “Me, Hajime, and… Mia.”

Mizuki immediately perked up.

“You’re letting me name our daughter Mia?!” she squealed excitedly.

“As long as we use the characters for reality and love,” Ena said grumpily, turning her head away pettily.

“Oh? I thought you’d go for beauty and love, not reality,” Mizuki asked, blinking a few times.

“It’s because I love the real you and I want people to love our daughter just the way she is, too,” Ena explained bashfully. “Even if she turns out to be our son or just our child.” She was still facing away, but Mizuki could see that her ears were red.

“Ena…” Mizuki gasped, tears welling up in her eyes. After a moment, she gently shut her agape mouth and softened it into a smile. She then brought her face down to Ena’s bump and nuzzled it.

“Hello, Mia,” Mizuki hummed softly. Just then, she felt something wiggle against her cheek.

“Ah!” Ena suddenly gasped. She stared down at her bump with wide eyes. Mizuki raised an eyebrow.

“What is it?” she asked worriedly.

“Mizuki, you didn’t feel that? One of them kicked!” Ena exclaimed.

Mizuki’s other eyebrow sprung up and her eyes nearly popped out of her head.

“Th-That’s what that was?!” she shouted in awe, looking up at Ena. Ena snorted and then burst into laughter, making Mizuki blush.

“Hey, I didn’t know what it was supposed to feel like!” Mizuki defended herself. She then turned to face Ena’s bump again, making a determined face.

“Whoever kicked, do it again! Kick for Mom!” Mizuki pleaded, caressing Ena’s bump. Ena laughed even harder, throwing her head back. However, neither of them felt another kick.

“C’mon! Hajime!” Mizuki begged, but to no avail. There was nothing.

“Miaaa!” Mizuki tried. At that moment, she felt a small push up.

“Ah! Mizuki, that was another kick!” Ena exclaimed. Mizuki shouted a small “Yes!” and pumped her fist in the air.

“I think she’s happy that she finally has a name,” Ena quipped.

“I’m glad she does, too,” Mizuki sighed with a smile. She looked over at Ena. “Thank you.”

“Of course,” Ena replied, returning the smile.
