Twa Corbies

Summary:

Peregrine meets someone new at the Tower.

Notes:

For Day 11 of the 2023 July Watson's Woes Promptfest: Brothers.

Work Text:

The white thing looked like a small bone. Eager, Peregrine leaned forward to snap it up.

'Don't eat those, duck hawk. They're poison."

The one-winged falcon stopped and looked over at his friend.

The Tower raven cocked his head toward a squad of tourists. "Look at their mouths."

Another lesson. Peregrine saw several visitors holding the same small white things in their mouths; a mist billowed from them.

A different voice behind them, deeper. "Humans burn a leaf for the smell of the smoke, Falcon. They live by their noses and mouths as many non-birds do."

It was another Tower raven, bigger than the other, with a great shaggy beard under his bill. He continued, addressing the other raven. "Do you see the fellow in the red shirt?"

"The one from Nevada?"

"New Mexico, my boy. The blue stone around his neck."

"He is travelling with his wife and child."

"Children, children!" Just then a screaming sticky child ran to the man, who held out a soft toy rabbit which the boy clutched. The woman beside him held an infant. "The toy was too big for the baby."

Peregrine squawked in amazement.

The two ravens faced the raptor.

Peregrine remembered something Raven had told him the day they met.

Both ravens hackled in agreement when Peregrine said, "You must be brothers."
