Lockdown Wars

Jack threw a ball against the side of the house. It bounced of the side and jumped back into his open hand. An irritated groan came from besides him. A guilty expression came over his face. His fiancée was working next to him and he knew she liked quiet while she worked. She gave him ‘the look’ he knew all too well. It meant that he needed to leave her in peace while she worked. Sighing, he gathered up his ball and headed down the hallway. This lockdown was going to bore him to death sooner or later.

“What’s wrong Jack?” a bubbly voice interrupted his frustration. When he turned, he found himself looking at his future sister-in-law.

“Oh, nothing Anna,” he sighed heavily to emphasise that it was clearly not nothing. “Elsa just is too busy to hang out with me.”

Anna folded her arms with an amused look on her face. “She just been promoted Jack, of course she is going to be busy.” A mischievous look appeared on her face – one that is usually followed by mayhem and madness. “However, she has been working very hard. Maybe she needs to be reminded that it’s time for a bit of fun?”

“Yes! They didn’t call me The Guardian of Fun in university for nothing!”

“How about a wager my friend? A series of pranking wars with Elsa as our main target! If you beat me, I will help you convince Elsa to have the bridal party skate down the aisle at the wedding.”

Jack got a daring glint in his eyes. “I’m listening.”

But,” Anna put great emphasis on the word, “if I win, you have to watch that sappy romance movie with us on movie night.”

A horrified look came over his face. He gulped. Was it worth it?

“Okay,” he said firmly. “You have a deal.”

“Yay!” Anna clapped her hands. “Okay, I’ll go first.”

Anna thought hard on what she could do. There was just so many things she could do and she needed it to be a winner. A smile came over her face when she had a brilliant idea. She poked her head into Elsa’s office with Jack right behind her. Her sister was typing on her laptop as she worked from several files on her messy desk. To do the prank she had in mind, Elsa needed to get away from her desk. There had to be something she could do. Another brilliant idea came to her mind. Seriously, she was on a roll here.

She motioned for Jack to follow her to the kitchen where she opened a special cupboard. Inside there were dozens of chocolate treats that she had accumulated over her time in lockdown. She gathered up a few of them, shut the cupboard and walked by Elsa’s office. A sly grin was forming on her face.

“Chocolate time,” Anna sung very loudly as she passed Elsa’s door. To emphasis the fact that she has chocolate, she opened one of the chocolate bars and took huge bite. “Yum, chocolate! I love you so much!”

She paused just out of sight of Elsa’s door and listened carefully. There was a pause as the tapping at the keyboard stopped. There was the sound of a chair being pushed away from a desk. Elsa then appeared in the hallway and walked towards the kitchen with a hungry look on her face. Excellent the plan worked! It was time to make her move.

Darting quickly into the office, Anna typed in Elsa’s password – seriously, she couldn’t believe that Elsa still hasn’t realised that she knows it – and opened up her office emails. Fiddling with the settings for a moment, giggling while she did it, she quickly put everything back to where everything was before escaping back into the hallway. Jack was giving her a bemused expression but Anna pressed her finger to her lips and threw him into the next room so they could hide. Elsa would be coming back at any moment anyway.

Elsa made her way back to her office, feeling a little bit happier now. Anna kept a large stash of chocolate in the kitchen and she wouldn’t mind sharing with her favourite sister. She may have helped herself to a few little chocolate bars but nothing else. It was Anna’s fault anyway. There had been no craving until she mentioned she had chocolate. Yes, Elsa thought, the blame is on her younger sister not her.

Once, she was back in her office, she sat back at her desk. Time to pick back up from where she left off. Now, if she remembered correctly, she was working on the Zuka file – a case of stalking – when she got that chocolate craving. Opening the file again, she carefully read it before she continued onwards.

She opened her emails to compile an email to her boss. Carefully, she started writing a very professional email. The case they had were shaky at best and highly circumstantial. It may be hard to get a conviction on the evidence they had. They needed more to go ahead with trial and she just wasn’t sure that they could. After hitting send, she gathered up her things to start on the Smith case – a case of a knifing in the local park. After working through that case for a while, she heard the ping of her emails. Opening them, she saw that it was her boss returning her email.

The email was one very short sentence. It simply read “Elsa are you feeling okay?” Confused, she went back to her email that she sent. In her mind, it was a very plain and simple email that didn’t leave anything to misinterpretation. Maybe her boss thought her idea to get more evidence was a stupid one? However, when she read the email, she noticed something odd. Instead of her usual signature at the bottom of the page that simply read ‘Elsa Winters – Assistant District Attorney, Burgess’ but now it read something different.

It was the entirely the Star Wars monologue from the first movie.

Anna Bjorgman, what did you do!” she yelled at the top of her lungs.

“Okay that was good,” Jack said wiping the tears from his eyes. “Guess I am up now.”

He gave a long hard thought of what he could do when it came to him. They were on the other side of the house as they had run to escape Elsa’s wrath at discovering what Anna had done. An idea popped into his head. Grabbing his cell phone out of his jeans’ pockets, he dialled Elsa’s number. She answered with a sigh and another irritated groan. Jack quickly put it on speaker and motioned for Anna not to say a word.

Jack, I am literally a five-minute walk away, what do you need?

“Elsa, it is an emergency! I can’t find my up sexy.”

What’s up sexy?

“Nothing much, how about yourself?”

There was a pause from the other end. Jack could imagine his fiancée hitting her head against her desk.

I am going to kill you Jack.”

Elsa hung up the phone just before Jack and Anna burst into laughter.

Anna was walking around the kitchen thinking what to do next. Jack was next to her tapping his fingers against the kitchen bench. Something was tugging at her pants. When she looked down was her husband’s adorable Elkhound. The dog seemed excited to see Anna and she bent down to rub his ears.

“Hello Sven,” she said to him. “Where is you dad? Is he around?”

“He is!” the relaxing voice of her husband came from behind her. Jumping to her feet, she allowed him to wrap his arms around her in a warm hug. His lips brushed against hers. “So, what’s been happening here? Missed anything?”

“Um,” Anna sideways glanced at her future brother-in-law who was determinedly not looking at her. They both knew that what they were doing wouldn’t be endorsed by Kristoff. “Nothing much, just hanging, ya know?”

Kristoff eyed them. “You know I can tell when you’re lying Anna. What are you really doing?”

“Just having a little bit of fun, you know the drill.”

“Do I want to know?”

Anna shook her head and Kristoff rolled his eyes but had a grin on his face. Gathering a glass of water, he headed into the den to watch some rugby.

Anna was still at a loss on what to do next. Her eyes fell onto Sven. Hmm, she thought, maybe he could be of help.

“Come on boy!” she said to him. “Come say hello to Auntie Elsa!”

Anna led Sven down to Elsa’s office. Inside, she could hear voices from within but she didn’t really mind. Opening the door, Sven raced to where Elsa was sitting and started licking her face.

“Ah Sven!” Elsa said when Sven jumped on her lap. “Not now! I’m in a meeting!”

Who is that cutie?” the voice on Elsa’s computer said.

“Say hello Sven,” Anna took Sven’s paw and waved it at the screen. “Say hello to Elsa’s client!”

Sven barked at the screen while Elsa tried to get Sven out of the way so she could see the screen. However, Anna could see that she was really laughing at the whole thing. Sven, meanwhile, was having the time of his life. He loved meeting new people and he was enjoying the attention. His tail was wagging and his eyes were large and full of love in it. Elsa looked halfway between amused and horrified at what was going on. Then again, she had been in the middle of an important meeting with a client.

“Okay, time for Sven to go,” Elsa said waving Sven’s paw at her client. “Say goodbye Sven! Auntie Elsa has to work.”

Sven gave a small bark and then trotted out of the room with Anna not far behind him. Behind her, she could have sworn Elsa had a large grin on her face. Point one to me, Anna thought as she closed the door behind her. No one could resist Sven’s adorable face.

“Time’s ticking Frost,” Anna wagged her finger at him. “Day’s almost over and last time I checked; I am winning.”

“I’m thinking” Jack said, sounding frustrated. “I’m thinking!”

An idea suddenly occurred to him. He raced into his room and quickly turned on his laptop. Anna was right on his heals. She looked curious as to what he was doing. After entering in his password, he looked online for some good pictures before opening a Word document. A plan was unfolding in his mind. When Anna saw what he was doing, a smirk started to form in her lips.

“Genius,” she said.

It was nearing the end of the day and Elsa was starting to get tired but she knew, there was lots more work to do. Reports were needed to be done and there was probably about a few dozen emails she hadn’t even had a chance to answer yet. Focus Elsa, she said as she gazed down at the stack of files on her desk. Sighing, she opened the Stanley file which was a case of a mugging gone wrong. As she looked through it, another sigh escaped it. The words were starting to blur but she forced herself to focus.

They said that law is an open door but right now, it felt like it was closing them. Shaking her head slightly, she went back to her work. Law had been all she wanted to do since she was thirteen, it was really interesting work. It was just the hours that annoyed her especially with her upcoming wedding.

A noise suddenly interrupted her thoughts. Jumping slightly, she looked wildly around for the source of it before she realised it was the printer. Gazing at it, she saw that it was printing something. That’s odd, she thought as she looked at the printer. She didn’t tell it to print anything, did she? A piece of paper was spat out and she read it.

“I live,” she whispered as she gazed at the paper. The words were written all in caps and filled the entire page.

She barely had time to comprehend what it said when the printer started to print other things as well. The next piece of paper had a picture of Nicolas Cage on it, the second had one too as did the third. Soon, she had a stack of papers with just Nicolas Cage’s face on them. Paper was everywhere, each with a different picture of Nicolas Cage on it.

Jack!” she called out. “I know this is you!”

Anna turned on the DVD player and slotted in the movie before jumping onto the couch and snuggling under the blanket next to her older sister. A bowl of popcorn was between them and she stuffed a handful into her mouth.

“I still can’t believe I have to do this,” Jack moaned from the other seat.

“You lost Frost boy,” Anna said, sticking out her tongue. “This is what we agreed on.”

“But it’s so unfair,” he said dragging out the words.

“Deal with it Jack,” Kristoff said, grabbing some popcorn. “This is what you get for making a deal with one of the Winters sisters. You knew the risks going in.”

“You love us though,” Anna battered her eyelashes at her husband who grinned at her.

“I still can’t believe you made a bet about who could annoy me the most,” Elsa said shaking her head. “Like seriously, I had important clients and people in those meetings.”

“You enjoyed it though,” Anna said giving her sister a cheeky grin.

“No, I did not,” Elsa gave a humph but Anna could see that there was a smile in there.

Grinning to herself, she relaxed into the couch to watch the movie with her favourite people. Maybe this lockdown wouldn’t be so bad after all.
