the best medicine

Summary:

Kronii has a headache today.

Work Text:

“Mom!” Amelia calls out as she walks into the dark room, climbing up the side of the bed and patting her mom’s hip. “We’re going now! Mama said to say bye!”

Kronii weakly turns over, barely straining her eyes open to look at her kid. “Alright,” She groans out, closing her eyes shut again before reopening them. “Have fun at school, okay?”

Amelia tilts her head. “Everything okay, mom?”

“Mhm-” Kronii winces. “Just tired.”

“Oh, okay…” The daughter whispers quietly as she carefully gets down from the bed. “Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite!”

Kronii laughs at that, and pulls her hand out of the blanket to give a wave to Amelia as she leaves the room, closing the door behind her.

She winces again as she closes her eyes, turning her face into the pillow and pressing against it. Her head was throbbing with pain, her entire body sending warnings to her brain if she dared to move.

So she doesn’t move, and instead, she goes back to sleep.

“Did you say bye to mom?” Fauna asks as Amelia hops in the backseat so her mother could buckle her up.

“Yep!” Amelia nods. “She said she was going back to sleep.”

“She is?” Fauna hums to herself. Usually, Kronii would get up after they left to start getting ready for work now that everyone was out of the house. Fauna tries to think to herself, wondering if maybe Kronii had a day off, but usually she went to work on the weekdays so she could hang out with the family.

“Mhm. She looked tired. Could barely keep her eyes open. Was she up past her bedtime?”

“Um…” Trying to recall last night, Fauna couldn’t think of anything out of the ordinary. Rather, Kronii had actually fallen asleep before her, which was rare but not enough to cause concern. Maybe she’s sick? Can’t be, usually she shows symptoms early…

“Mama?”

Fauna smiles. “I’m not too sure, sweetheart. Let’s just focus on getting you to school for now, okay?”

“Okay!”

Fauna enters the house quietly, setting the keys on the counter before making her way to the bedroom.

The door creaks open, and she sees Kronii lying face down into the pillows, seemingly hiding herself.

“Kronii?” Fauna whispers, and Kronii grumbles, turning her head and looking at Fauna with one strained eye.

“Can you close the curtain?” She winces, turning her face back into the pillow.

Wordlessly, Fauna strides to the curtain, doing her best to keep quiet. It still isn’t that dark, but she hopes it’s better as she moves to sit on the edge of the bed, comfortingly rubbing Kronii’s back.

“Everything okay?”

“Headache.” Kronii muffles. “Sorry.”

“Don’t be sorry,” Fauna leans down, kissing the tip of Kronii’s ear. Kronii turns her head, offering a weak smile. “Did you already call out of work?”

“No… I can still go, I just need a bit longer-”

“You’re not going.” Fauna huffs, grabbing Kronii’s phone from the nightstand. “I’ll call for you.”

“Fauna…”

Fauna looks over at her wife, adamant on not letting Kronii go when she’s in this state.

“Okay…” Kronii resides, letting her face fall back into the pillow.

“Kronii~” Fauna sings, and Kronii grumbles as she wakes up, trying to dig her face back into a pillow, but all she gets is a collarbone that giggles from her antics.

She ends up opening her eyes, finding herself in the crook of Fauna’s neck, with one of her wife’s arms wrapped around her, Kronii’s own arms hugging Fauna like a pillow.

“Sorry to wake you, love, but I have to go pick up Ame and get food now.”

“Wh…” Kronii grunts as she untangles herself. “It’s already… huh?”

“Oh, wow, you must’ve been really dazed.”

She sucks a piece of food out of her teeth. “When did… When did I eat…??”

“A couple of hours ago? I woke you up to eat, and then we cuddled as you went back to sleep.”

Kronii furrows her eyebrows. “I thought that was a dream.”

“Aw,” Fauna giggles, sitting up and pressing a kiss to Kronii’s brow. “You dream about me? How obsessed.”

“We’re literally married.”

“Ah yes, how could I forget? Especially after you-”

Kronii groans loudly, turning over in the bed to face away. “Don’t say it.”

Fauna laughs again as she stands, before leaning down to give a quick kiss to Kronii’s shoulder. “I’ll be back soon, okay?”

“You have to be quiet, okay, Ame? Kronii isn’t feeling too good.”

“Okay, mama.” Amelia hums, taking off her backpack to go put it into her room.

However, curiosity gets the better of her, and she only sets down her backpack in the entrance to her bedroom, before turning around and heading to her parents room again.

Carefully, she opens the door, and sneaks in, all the way up to the bed.

She huffs as she jumps onto it, climbing up the side and almost falling, if it wouldn't be for the hands that caught her and lifted her up.

Kronii sets her daughter down on her stomach as she slouches against the headboard. “Hey, Kiddo. How was school?”

“It was okay.” Amelia shrugs. “Mama said to be quiet today because you feel bad.”

“Mhm,” Kronii drawls, closing her eyes as she adjusts to be laying down on her back again. “My head hurts really bad.”

“Oh…” Amelia hums in response, laying down atop her mom as well. “Did you have too much candy?”

Her mom laughs, but she sounds tired. “No… This just happens sometimes. I don’t think I can explain it right now, I’m sorry.”

“That’s okay, mom.” The small kid curls up and starts to close her eyes. “You can just get better and tell me later.”

“Alright, remind me in case I forget?”

Kronii opens her eyes again, only to smile when she hears the soft snoring of her daughter already asleep.

Her eyes flicker to the bedroom door as it opens, revealing Fauna looking slightly surprised.

“Oh, I was wondering where she went.”

Offering a small smile on the way, Fauna heads over to Kronii’s side, lifting her arm to let Kronii shift into her side again, trying not to wake their daughter.

“I thought I was supposed to be the one taking a nap.”

“If you want, I can take her back to her room and we can leave you be.”

“Nah,” Kronii turns her head, pressing a small kiss to Fauna’s cheek as she settles in again, the pain only becoming a distant memory. “This is the best medicine.”
