Work Text:

In hindsight, Hanzo and Cassidy should have seen the rain coming.

It had been cloudy all day at the Watchpoint, a rarity in the summer months, which almost always preludes rainfall. Despite this, the couple was adamant on spending the day outside. The cowboy had just spent the last three weeks in the med-bay due to a particularly nasty stab wound when a Talon agent got the jump on him, Hanzo staying glued to his husband's side the whole time. Kumo, their little bundle of fluff, stayed curled up on the foot of the bed for the most part with the dragons curled on top of her. Other agents took turns taking her outside for walks and to play, but she was quick to whine so she could go back inside, sensing one of her fathers was in pain.

Now that Cassidy was all healed, the two men wanted to spend an afternoon getting some fresh air. The cowboy prepared a nice picnic for them as a thank you for taking care of him and they set up outside one of the hangars. The two ate leaned up against each other, laughing at the dragons stealing most of the fruit salad and Kumo begging for half of Hanzo's sandwich. After lunch was eaten, the couple took to throwing a ball for the three kids, Soba and Udon joining in mainly to make their adopted sister happy, not really caring for the actual ball. They had gotten in a decent amount of fetch time before the first drops of rain started fall. Both Hanzo and Cassidy looked up as the first drops hit them, then turned to each other.

"Guess that's our cue to head in." Cole smiled at his husband, throwing his serape over his shoulders to shield his darling from the rain.

"I suppose so." Hanzo smiled back and pulled the serape closer around himself.

Just as the two were about to stand and pack everything away, they were tackled by their not-quite-a -baby-anymore samoyed. The couple fell over on their back as Kumo dropped the ball and yipped excitedly, the rain exciting her. She quickly grabbed Cassidy's hat from where it fell and ran, baiting her American father into chasing her. Hanzo laughed as his husband ran after her, quickly packing their things into the bag they brought out with them. Meanwhile the dragons were hopping around each other, heads tilted up to enjoy the rain.

The archer quickly finished packing their things and went over to help his beloved with their thieving daughter. Luckily for the cowboy, their little fluff ball barked happily seeing her other father coming to join them, dropping the hat in the process. Cassidy quickly retrieved his hat and scooped up the little bandit, showering her in kisses.

"Are you causing trouble my little cloud?" Hanzo laughed as he reached the two joining in on the puppy kisses.

"More like a rain cloud right now. Her fur's gettin' soaked." The gunslinger chuckled as he set Kumo down and she quickly ran over to her brothers hopping around with them. He then turned to his husband and reached out for his hand. "Ready to head in, pumpkin?"

The dragon smiled and nodded in response, the two then setting off towards the compound. Cassidy picked up their bag as they passed it and Hanzo whistled for their children to join them, Soba and Udon hitching a ride on Kumo's back.

The couple went about putting away their picnic supplies and drying off their soaked pup. Between the two of them, they managed to dry her off rather quickly despite her being 80 percent fluff. Luckily, they didn't have to worry about the dragons given the spirits could just dry themselves. Kumo seemed to have tired herself out from all the playtime she had and quickly hopped up into bed to take a nap, whining for her fathers to join her. Both men laughed and quickly set about changing into comfier clothes and removing prosthetics, set on enjoying the rest of the rainy day cuddled up in bed.

As the two men settled into bed, they decided to put on a movie. Hanzo gave into his cowboy's puppy-dog eyes to watch The Magnificent Seven for the 300th time. No matter how many times they watch it, the archer will still say the original is better but he'll indulge Cassidy since it makes him so happy. The little family got comfy, Cassidy propped up on pillows with Hanzo laying back on his chest. Kumo settled on his Japanese father's lap, Soba and Udon curling up in her fluffy back. They asked Athena to dim the main lights, the room being lit only by the TV and comforting blue glow from the dragons.

"You know," Cassidy started in a low voice. "In all our time together, I don't think we've ever had a rainy day as nice as this."

Hanzo hummed in response, reflecting on the past rain days spent together. They were nice, don't get him wrong, but perhaps it was the addition of their little cloud that made this one extra special. The archer voiced this thought to his husband and the man seemed to agree.

"Although," Hanzo continued to share his thoughts. "Any rainy day with you would be exceedingly better than the ones I've had in the past."

This was a truth Cassidy learned in their early months of dating. The first time it rained while both were on base, the cowboy suggested a similar idea of just being cuddled up together and relaxing. 'Typical rainy day activities,' Cassidy had said. Hanzo confessed he was unfamiliar with the concept. Growing up, the Shimada heir was expected to continue his rigorous training in all conditions. Normally, this would be practical for soldiers to train in harsher conditions. However, it's not so practical for a six year old to be practicing kendo skills in the pouring rain.

Upon learning this, Cassidy vowed to make every rainy day for Hanzo enjoyable from then on. Growing up in the desert, the cowboy didn't experience a lot of rain. When it did, it was usual a sign to just do nothing but relax all day. It was the same thing in Deadlock, given he was one of the bosses and could do whatever he pleased. With Blackwatch it was different. Reyes was ruthless in his training regimes and made them run laps in all types of weather. However, he did have a heart occasionally and would grant a day off on some stormy days.

This one, however, was way better than any of the previous for Cassidy. Now, the gunslinger had a gorgeous husband and three cute critters to spend them with.

"Always doing my best to make you happy as can be darlin'. Love you, Hanny." Cole pressed a kiss to the top of Hanzo's head and the archer smiled.

"Love you too, anata." Hanzo titled his head back to kiss his husbands cheek and settled back against his chest.

The two of them resumed watching the movie in comfortable silence, Hanzo using one hand to pet his little cloud and the other to hold Cassidy's arm around him. This was not a bad way to spend a rainy day.
