Rusty struggles as memories of his divorce haunt him

Notes:

A good song that I’d argue matches this vibe can be Drift Away Omnichord by Trillian, I Think I Like When It Rains by WILLIS or Dream Girl by Crisaunt

Rusty’s eyes burned as they usually did, the burning rage and depression, the tears he cried deep into the night. He was indescribably sad after his divorce, his lover, or ex-lover, Jack Russel. Jack had divorced Rusty due to growing feelings he had about being known as ‘Rusty’s beloved w̶i̶f̶e̶ husband’, comments he got from people he knew about ‘who was the man?’ or ‘how is it being married to a celebrity?’ made Jack question his individuality until it was too much and he wanted to run from the problem, divorcing Rusty. Rusty, although shocked, only asked if Jack really wanted to. The words “I do” still ringing in Rusty’s ears, he wanted to say no, he still somewhat wished he had, but if it made his beloved happier, he would still do it.

Rusty slowly whipped his eyes, it had been 3 months his it was officiated, Rusty barely did anything by then, he took a break from sports, he wasn’t sure when he’d return, he would be fine if he lost all his money and just lied down homeless, at least then he could run away. In the past 4 days, Rusty had spent looking through their old photos, texts, some of Jack’s old diary entries, just begging for more of Jack. Rusty hadn’t showered in these past 3 months and he knew he reeked.

It has been 3 months since Rusty heard from Jack, it had been 3 months since he saw Jack, but it had been since before they started dating, 16 years ago, back in elementary school, since Rusty wanted Jack, and he wasn’t sure if he’d die before he stopped wishing Jack and him could kiss, cuddle in bed, and do whatever adults did after those stages. Even though Rusty was in his mid twenties, he still never knew what adulting meant, and maybe he’ll never know.

Rusty climbed out of bed, he could feel that he didn’t have the water or energy in him to cry more, he went to the kitchen, seeing his shelf’s of out of date food, some even moulding, he did see bread that looked edible, so he chose toast for breakfast. Grabbing it, he thought of the time him and Jack started dating and tried making bread, messing up, they had lots of time talking while cleaning the flour, milk, and butter that went everywhere in the kitchen, but Rusty still loved the bread, it was theirs, Jack also adored it, and although he’d never tell anyone, he used to specifically tell everyone in his house that it was his bread and only he could eat it. That’s when his parents started putting together the puzzle pieces that Jack wasn’t exactly straight.

Taking the toast out of the toaster, he started walking past his trophies, reminded of sports, he remembered that time Jack surprised Rusty back in highschool, after a big game with his schools Cricket team, Rusty got changed and went out to see Jack with flowers and chocolates. Rusty wasn’t expecting Jack to be there as most of his cricket teammates were assholes who never got adhd and found Jack a weirdo. Rusty smiled thinking of it, until he remembered the divorce. The media had been made aware of their breakup, putting it on as many websites and such as they could, giving homophobes spaces to say it was unnatural, Rusty stopped using the internet after that day, the only thing he used it for was Netflix.

He got his own glass of water and chugged it, his throat feeling better quickly after days of no water. As Rusty was eating his toast, he heard a ring at the doorbell, not sure who it was, he went to his window, it was broken, the memory bringing tears, it was the last cricket round him and Jack played, Rusty loved mixing two of his favourite things, but funny enough, Jack accidentally crashed it through the window, breaking it. Jack said something about cricket not being for him and that maybe he wasn’t manly enough, Rusty wondered if that had something to do with their divorce.

Rusty heard the bell ring again and saw his mum there, she had a worried look on her face, as much as Rusty knew that interaction could help him, he couldn’t move, he didn’t want to. Rusty just slowly watched as she walked off, back into her car before shedding a tear and driving off, Rusty started crying all over again, deciding to go back to his bed and crying himself to sleep for another day.
