“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?”
“Do you even know how to use a saw?”
“Guys,” Bucky interrupts with a laugh, “trust me. I know what I’m doing.”
“That’s what you said when you tried to give me a fade,” Cass grumbles, rubbing a hand over his too-short hair.
Wincing at the memory of that particular debacle, Bucky sets the bundle of two-by-fours and larger boards on the back porch. He arranges the sawhorses parallel to each other then lays a single two-by-four across them. Reaching for the saw, he catches sight of both boys still standing at the edge of the porch, watching him with varying degrees of doubt.
“Don’t you guys have some video games you should be playing? Some tv shows to watch? It’s gonna be a while. And it’ll probably be boring.”
“No, they do not!” Sarah’s tart voice wafts out of the kitchen window. “You know I don’t want them staring at screens all damn day! Hence the lemonade stand.”
Caught, Bucky rubs the back of his neck and gives the boys a sheepish smile. They stare back at him, unimpressed.
“So, uh, who wants to help me build this lemonade stand?”
“Can I use the saw?!” AJ asks, eyes wide with excitement as he bounces on his toes.
Cass shakes his head wearily and goes to the back door. He mutters, “I’ll get the first aid kit,” as he opens it and slips inside.
