Work Text:

Sam had been sitting in the living room, a basket of dirty laundry sitting beside him, when he was alerted by his phone of someone at the door. He looked down and frowned when he saw that it was his neighbor, the little boy called Peter. Sam’s known the boy since he was born. He was close friends with his parents. However, Peter looks scared, and that’s what gets Sam moving.

Sam stands up from his spot on the couch, and quickly heads towards the door. He opens the door, and he looks down at Peter with a worried look on his face. “Peter? Sweetie, what are you doing here?”

Peter looks up at Sam with tears in his eyes. “I was sent home from school, Mr. Barnes!”

Sam frowns. “Did they tell you why? Why didn’t you go straight home?”

Peter sniffs, and Sam just instantly wants to pull the boy into his arms, protect him with his entire being. “Dad and Papa aren’t home. They’re working, and I don’t have keys to my door!”

“Okay, okay. It’s alright, sweetheart. Come inside,” Sam says, urging the boy inside. He glances around, before shutting the door and locking it. “Come to the living room. Are you thirsty?”

“M- May I have some water?” Peter asks, looking over at Sam nervously.

“Don’t be nervous around me, Peter. Of course you can have some water,” Sam says, before heading to the kitchen. He pulls out  a small water bottle for Peter. He walks back into the living room to find the young boy sitting on the couch already. Sam walks over and hands him the water bottle.

“Thank you,” Peter says, taking the water bottle from Peter.

“Alright, Peter. You just stay here and watch TV for a little bit. You can watch whatever you’d like to. Then, I’m going to call the school and find out why they sent you home so early like this, and then I’m going to call your parents and let them know you’re at my house. Okay?” Sam tells him.

“Okay. Thank you Mr. Barnes,” Peter says, and takes the remote when Sam hands it to him.

“Peter, please. You’ve known me your whole life now. You don’t have to call me Mr. Barnes. Sam is fine,” Sam says, chuckling softly. He heads back to the kitchen and grabs the home phone.

Sam calls the school instantly, wanting to know answers.

“Midtown High School, how may I help you?”

“Hi, my name is Sam Barnes. Listen, I’m calling on behalf of Peter Parker’s parents. I’d like to know why you sent him home so early. It’s only twelve in the afternoon. He should still be in school,”

“We can’t disclose that information to anyone but his parents,” the woman says.

Sam scoffs. “You send him and he’s forced to come to my house because his parents aren’t home,” he argues. “You damn well will tell me why you sent this child home. I’ll be calling his parents as soon as you tell me the reason. The fact that you even sent him home before telling his parents is astounding.”

“Mr. Barnes-”

“Tell me now,” Sam demands. “Or I will be getting  the police involved.”

The woman lets out a heavy sigh. “We believe that Peter is presenting. He… caused a bit of a ruckus with some of the alpha’s during class. We thought it’d be safer if he was sent home,”

“And you didn’t think to tell his parents this information?” Sam asks angrily.

“We hadn’t gotten that far yet. We were more concerned with Peter’s safety. It was clear he was presenting as an omega, and presenting as a male omega in a school full of alpha’s is not safe!”

“Bullshit. You should have informed his parents first before anything,” Sam snaps, before hanging up. He takes a deep breath before going to his contacts and finding Tony, one of Peter’s dads, number.

“Make this quick. I’m busy,”

“Peter was sent home early, Tony. The school said he’s presenting,”

“What?” Tony shouts. “And why the hell was I not informed of this information?”

“Exactly what I asked, and they came up with a lame ass excuse. I mean, yes, Peter’s safety is important, but they sent him home knowing that he was presenting. Tony, I have Peter with me. He’s an omega,”

“Holy shit. Holy shit,” Tony breathes. “I’m canceling my plans for the rest of the day. Sam-”

“Tony, don’t worry about anything, please. Peter can stay with me until you come home. I’ve been through a heat before. I’ll be able to help him through it until you’re with him,” Sam assures him. “Shit, I’ve gotta call Bucky. Having an Alpha around isn’t going to help with Peter’s heat.”

“Thank you Sam,” Tony sighs in relief. “I’m going to call Steve, and then I’m going to get home as soon as possible. Please, look after my son. He’s so young. He doesn’t know…”

“It’s okay, Tony. I’ve got him. I promise,” Sam says. “Please be careful.” He hangs up on Tony, before heading back into the living room. He frowns when he sees Peter looking just miserable on the couch. Sam takes a deep breath, and he walks closer to Peter. “Pete, your dad will be here soon.”

“I want him now,” Peter whines.

Sam instantly knows that the heat is kicking in, and he feels terrible that he won’t be able to do much for the newly presented omega, other than care for him and make him as comfortable as he can.

“I know, I’m so sorry, sweetheart,” Sam says softly. “Peter, you’re presenting, and you’re going into heat, and it’s not going to be very fun. I’m sorry to tell you this. Come with me. I’m going to try to get you as comfortable as possible until your dad comes, okay?” He gently grabs a hold of Peter and pulls him up from the couch. He picks Peter up easily, and he carries the boy upstairs.

It doesn’t take very long for Peter to start whining, crying about the pain. Sam gives him a wet washcloth, hoping that it’ll help, but it hardly does. All he can really do is say comforting words to Peter.

Twenty minutes pass, and Sam’s too focused on Peter that he doesn’t hear footsteps coming up. Then, the doors open, and Bucky is walking into the bedroom.

“Sam, what the hell is going on here?” Bucky asks, when he sees Peter on their bed, clearly in heat.

Sam gasps, and he looks over at Bucky, eyes widened. “Bucky!” He hisses. He glances at Peter, before standing up. He quickly pushes Bucky out of the bedroom. “What are you doing home so early?”

“I got a frantic text from Steve saying that Peter was presenting!” Bucky shouts. “What-?”

“I’m trying to make him as comfortable as possible. I wasn’t going to let him be in heat on the couch ,” Sam argues. “You can’t be here. Peter-” He glances back when he can hear Peter whining.

“Fuck, I have to-” Bucky tries to push Sam out of the way, but Sam quickly grabs him, pulling him back.

“James Buchanan Barnes, don’t even think about it! You will not go near that boy.”

“You brought that omega into our house when he’s in heat!” Bucky shouts.

“And you should know better than to even try to go near that defenseless young boy, James Barnes. You’re going to have to leave this house until Tony comes to collect Peter. Go,” Sam warns, angrily shoving Bucky towards the stairs.

“And where the hell am I supposed to go?” Bucky demands.

“I don’t care where you go, but you’re not going to be in this house when an omega is in heat,”

“I would never hurt that omega, Sam-”

“I know you wouldn’t, Buck. But, an alpha is unpredictable when a newly presented omega is in heat,” Sam says, before leaning forward and gently kissing Bucky once on the lips, before turning around and making his way back into the bedroom. He shuts the door, and locks it.

It takes Tony and Steve up to an hour to arrive at Sam and Bucky’s house.

When they finally arrive, they find Bucky sitting on the bench on their front porch. Steve walks up to him. “Did Sam seriously kick you out of your own house?”

Bucky looks up at Steve, and he lets out a sigh. “It was for Peter’s safety,”

Tony growls, walking up to him. “You better not have-”

“I didn’t lay a hand on Peter, Tony. My alpha brain almost took over for a second, but Sam stopped me, and then he kicked me out. I can’t blame him,” Bucky says. “He’s upstairs with Peter in our bedroom.”

Tony sighs in relief, and thanks Bucky before rushing into the house.

“You think I should go in there?” Steve asks.

“He’s your kid, Steve. Why wouldn’t you go in there?” Bucky asks, frowning slightly.

“Because I’m an alpha,” Steve argues.

“You and I both know that you wouldn’t dare put harm in Peter’s way,” Bucky says, and he nods towards the house. “Go. I’m sure Tony and Peter will need your support.”

Steve takes a deep breath, slowly nodding in agreement, before rushing into the house.

A moment later, the door is being opened and Steve walks out carrying Peter in his arms. Bucky stands, and he watches with worry as he watches Steve wordlessly carry Peter back to their house, Tony following behind them. Bucky looks over and sighs softly when he sees Sam standing at their door.

“I’m sorry,” Sam says, looking up at Bucky.

Bucky frowns, and he walks over to Sam, stepping back into their house. “Sorry for what, babe?”

“I was being snappy with you earlier, and I shoved you…”

“You were protecting a newly presented omega, and I’m so proud of you for that,” Bucky says, gently cupping Sam’s cheeks with his hands. “I’m not mad at you, so don’t think that for a second.”

Sam frowns. “You’re- You’re not going to punish me?”

Bucky can’t help but scoff. “Since when have I ever punished you, Sammy?”

“I just thought… you seemed so upset earlier. I thought…”

“Well, don’t think that ever again,” Bucky warns softly. He reaches over and shuts the door, locking it. “You’re not being punished, and you’re never going to be punished. I’ve never believed in that bullshit. You were doing what any omega would have done to protect a younger omega. I’m proud of you.”

“Do you think he’s going to be okay?” Sam asks worriedly.

“Yes, absolutely. Peter’s going to be just fine. He’s with Steve and Tony. They’re going to take care of him, and he’s even got one of the best omega’s out there to lead him the right way. Besides you, of course,” Bucky assures him. “I’m sure you can go visit Peter once his heat is over.”

“I would really like that,” Sam says, nodding.

Sam tries to busy himself over the week, trying not to think about Peter. But, it’s all he can think about.

So finally, when he calls Tony and asks if he can come over for a visit, Tony says yes instantly. So, Sam bakes Peter’s favorite pie, cherry pie, and he goes over to Steve and Tony’s house with Bucky.

“What’s this?” Tony asks when he opens the door, finding Sam and Bucky standing there, with Sam holding a pie in his hands. “Sam, you really didn’t have to…”

“Peter just finished his first heat. I just thought it’d make him feel better,” Sam says, and he hands over the pie to Tony. “Besides, I think he deserves a nice little treat.”

“He most certainly does. Come inside. I’ll get plates,” Tony says, and urges the two to come inside, before shutting the door. “Peter! Come downstairs. You’ve got visitors!”

“I’m coming!” The young boy shouts from upstairs.

Sam chuckles softly, and then he follows Tony into the kitchen with Bucky. Tony sets the pie on the kitchen island before grabbing some plates and forks.

“Mr. Barnes! Sammy!”

Sam looks over and smiles when he sees Peter, and sees Peter running towards him. Sam bends down, and pulls the young boy in a sweet hug, pleased that the young boy hasn’t been scared off after what he went through when Sam was helping him through his heat. “Hey kiddo. How are you feeling?”

“A lot better. Dad says I can go to school tomorrow,” Peter says with excitement.

“That’s awesome. I’m glad you’re feeling better,” Sam says, and high fives Peter.

“You know, Sam made something for you that’ll make you feel even better,” Bucky says, leaning against the kitchen island, grinning at Peter. “Something I think you’ll like very much.”

Peter gasps, and he looks over at Sam. “What is it?” He bounces excitedly on his feet.

Sam laughs, and stands straight. “How do you feel about some pie, Pete?”

Peter’s eyes widen, and he looks over at his dad. “Dad, are we gonna have some pie?”

“You bet we are. Go sit down at the table, and I’ll bring you some,” Tony says, nodding towards the table, and he grins as he watches Peter hurry over to the table, taking a seat.

“He’s adorable,” Sam says, and he looks over at Tony.

“You know, you’re really good with him. You two are still young. Have you thought about having kids?”

Sam huffs. “You already know I’ve been wanting kids ever since I was presented as an omega. It’s this one-” Sam says, and he turns to point at Bucky. “Who’s a bit more reluctant.”

Bucky scowls. “I don’t think now is the best time to be having this conversation, Sam-” He begins, and he instantly sees the frown forming on Sam’s face. “But… perhaps it’s a conversation we can have later when we’re at home. How’s that sound?”

Sam’s eyes instantly light up, and he walks over to Bucky, kissing him lovingly. Sam can’t help but laugh when he hears Peter complaining in the background about Sam and Mr. Barnes being gross.
