Work Text:
They say that to know someone's true name is to know their soul. And when you are given that name, you are to hold it near and dear. Like a whisper of a promise, a secret to be kept.
“If you awake to a knife at your neck, if monsters dig their claws into you, if death comes knocking at your door… Call out my name, Adeptus Xiao, and I will be here when you call.”
That's what he told you, and there were times that you needed him to save you from peril. However, there were times when the nights were so cold and lonely that you couldn't help but say—
“Xiao.”
And just like any other time, he would come, in a flash of energy.
Just as he promised.
He would say your name, and your soul would hum.
Because
Just as you held his soul,
He held yours.
Although, sometimes you felt guilty—selfish even.
"Do you find my selfishness annoying, Xiao?" You might have asked, but you weren't truly going to stop (maybe lessen it if he were truly annoyed) because you were human, and it is in your nature to be selfish.
"Of course not. I wouldn't stay if I wasn't okay with it." He answered, as if he were answering a question about the weather. "Just as you are mine, I am yours. This will never change."
