Work Text:

Saki wasn’t sure if this was going to work out the way she wanted it to. Nothing had gone wrong yet, but everything was riding on this moment. She had to get it right.

After all, Emu was counting on her to bring the snacks for their date.

Since it was their first date, both girls wanted to go all out. Emu had planned the location (which was a surprise) and Saki had put herself in charge of snacks (also a surprise). Which is how Saki found herself spending Saturday morning in the kitchen instead of getting ready. Staring down a bowl of batter, a bowl of custard, and the taiyaki pan heating up. Slowly, Saki picked up a spoon and filled one of the molds. She gently tilted the pan, letting the batter fill the entire shape of the fish. Giving it a moment, she then scooped up the cream and added it to the center of the molds before quickly adding another spoonful of batter on top. Closing the pan and locking it, Saki flipped it. After it was safely back on the burner, Saki let herself relax, momentarily wondering why she was stressing out so much over this. It’s taiyaki. As long as she didn’t mix up the salt and sugar, Emu would love it, even if it spilled out of the mold a bit.

Yet the thought of being able to present Emu with perfectly shaped taiyaki and tell her she had done it herself was so enchanting, she could picture it now. Saki would open her small backpack (the one with the Phenny charm Emu had gotten her) and pull out the container full of taiyaki, handing it over for Emu to open. She would watch as Emu opened the container, eyes shining when she saw the taiyaki, still warm and crisp. Saki would offhandedly make a comment about making them from scratch,  it was no big deal really , and Emu would give her that gorgeous smile of hers, the one that rivaled the sun.

Saki was ripped from her thoughts by the scent of smoke. Snapping back to attention, Saki grabbed the oven mitts and pulled the taiyaki pan from the stovetop.

Completely burnt on the bottom.

Well, there was still another hour until the date. Plenty of time to try again.
