Doctor Robotnik's greatest victory was the death of Sonic the Hedgehog.
The end of an era, the end of a life, the start of something new. It was all something Tails would- couldn't see. He shut his eyes tight and believed that as long as he couldn't see those lifeless eyes staring back, he was fine. But the image invaded his mind endlessly, it stayed and stayed and at some point Tails was convinced the blood was on his hands. His fault.
Tails sat on the floor of his workshop. Amy had just left, she came and went, to take care of him. He never allowed her into his workshop though, he couldn't bare to see the horror that would cross her face if she saw what he was making.
It wasn't that bad, he convinced himself, it was just a small project. It was just to bring someone back he had lost too soon.
The metalic version of Sonic stared back at him. Waiting for activation, for Tails to flip the switch and let life flow into the robot's wires. His computer was open beside him, calucating each and every trait Tails had programmed into the robot. Each memory that Tails had poured in as many details as he could. From the day they met, to what he knew from before they even met. To every adventure. He poured everything into the robot. That shell of Sonic.
He knew it wouldn't be Sonic. It wouldn't be him, it would try, it would fail, but Tails- Tails needed the comfort of it just *trying*. He needed his brother. He needed the one person in his life who had always lifted him up and believed in him.
His fingers traced over the small switch. Just staring for a moment. Trying to just. Believe. He flipped it, the whole workshop sprung to life. Gears moved, a beeping constant started, and Tails sat there on the floor. Watching his workshop come to life and breathe.
The eyes flashed on the robot. A voice, metalic but familiar. "Tails?"
Tails smiled. Tears falling from his eyes. "Hey, Sonic."
