Work Text:

The soft scent of jasmine and fresh laundry was a pleasant one as Komaru walked through the hotel halls. She almost forgot how nice hotels felt. The last time she stayed in one the dark, dusty halls and smell of drying blood was hardly enjoyable. It was hard to believe it was only months ago that she and Toko were fighting for their lives. Speaking of the woman, she trailed behind Komaru, shrinked into herself as usual.

"Y'know, the foundation's pretty nice for getting this hotel for us! It looks pretty fancy, too" Komaru said, more to herself than anything.

"Psh- O-of course you would focus on something as dumb as that. I just want to get this dumb thing over with…" Toko replied as pessimistic as ever.

She did have a bit of a point though, the whole reason they were here was to help out her brother and the rest of the future foundation help rebuild the new Hope's Peak Academy. Well, in reality only Toko was asked to help out since Komaru wasn't technically a part of the foundation, but they were a packaged deal.

By the time she snapped out of her thoughts they were at their room's door. Swiping the keycard given to them by the receptionist, she unlocked it and entered the room. Komaru unceremoniously dropped her luggage and flopped onto the bed.

"Ahhh~ Toko, feel the bed, it's so soft!" She happily sighed. She expected the other to start berating her for something like getting her shoes on the bed, or not checking for bedbugs first, but was met by silence surprisingly.

"Toko?" She questioned as she turned to look at her. The woman just stared at the bed, immersed in her thoughts.

"Heyyy- earth to Tokoooo?" She sat up more and waved her hands around, which seemed to get the attention of the other. "You alright?"

"I- I just wasn't expecting there to be u-um…just one bed…" Toko responded nervously

"Oh, yeah, I guess you're right. Is that a problem, though? We've slept in the same bed before"

"Y-yeah- you're right - it's not a big deal"

—--
'It's a huge deal, you idiot!!' Toko's mind yelled, though she wasn't sure if she was calling Komaru or herself an idiot, probably both. Realistically, Komaru was right, they had shared a bed before. But, one:

That was also when the world was pretty much ending. They didn't really have a choice.

And, more importantly, two:

That was before she realized her feelings for Komaru were much more than platonic.

Sharing a bed with a kinda-friend was something she could do, but sharing a bed with the woman you were hopelessly in love with, and had no idea of your feelings, she wasn't sure if she could survive that.

She would consider just getting another room, but the secretary offhandedly mentioned that they were fully booked. And the room was way too small to fit another bed into. She could hypothetically sleep on the floor, but her back would hurt all day tomorrow and that would probably make Komaru more suspicious.

It was clear she had to simply accept her fate and hope things weren't too awkward. But then again, Komaru had some kind of social power that made it almost impossible to be awkward around her. It was admirable, really…

Toko shook her head furiously. She couldn't be thinking about her like that if she was gonna get through this! She could wait to think about how great the woman was when she wasn't just feet away from her, hopefully…

Toko willed her thoughts away as she focused on getting ready for bed along with Komaru.

Komaru let out a yawn as she climbed into the bed and under the covers. Toko reluctantly did the same, keeping her distance from the other.

Komaru flicked off the lamp on the nightstand next to her, getting comfortable under the covers. "Goodnight Toko, sweet dreams" She smiled softly up at her before closing her eyes.

"Goodnight Omaru…" Toko tried to keep her smile out of her voice. She got comfortable and made sure to keep her distance as she closed her eyes, falling into a comfortable sleep.

—---

Toko woke up to the sun in her eyes as she blinked them open. Groaning, she went to turn over, but was stopped by an unexpected force. It's then that she noticed the weight on top of her, and even without her glasses, she could see a familiar dark green head of hair under her chin. She could feel her cheeks warm and body tense. Komaru had a arm thrown onto of her, and their legs were tangled together. Worst of all, Toko could feel the woman's soft breath against her neck. Her body felt like it was on fire. Yeah, she might have survived a killing game and an army of monokuma robots, but she was sure she was gonna die right here.

And to add fuel to the fire, Komaru started to stir. Toko held her breath as the other slowly blinked awake. Maybe if she was still enough she could disappear. But sadly the universe wasn't so kind. Komaru lifted up her head to look at the other.

"Hm~ morning' Toki" Komaru spoke through a yawn.

Toko just stared at the other, frozen. She waited for the other shoe to drop, maybe Komaru would notice their closeness and awkwardly move away and they won't talk about it again, or maybe life would be cruel and Komaru would shove her away in disgust. She knew deep down Komaru wasn't like that, but it never hurt to prepare for the worst.

However, what she didn't prepare for was Komaru, still half asleep, to place a kiss against her jaw. It was light and short, almost missable, yet Toko's world was thrown upside down at the action

"Ugh…don't wanna get up" Komaru groaned as she simply plopped back down onto Toko's shoulder once again, like she didn't just give her a heart attack

"K-Komaru…" Toko finally spoke breathlessly

"Hm? What's up?" She replied casually

"W-what's up!? You j-just kissed me!" Toko finally lost it, yelling out in pure confusion. Why was she acting like she didn't just kiss her?!

"Huh? Wh-" Komaru's voice was laced with confusion before the realization hit her, waking her up in a instant. "...oh."

Toko sputtered "Oh!? What do you mean o-mph!" Her loud questioning was interrupted by lips against hers. Even through her confusion and shock it felt so nice, even if she was too in her head to kiss back before Komaru pulled away.

"That's better" Komaru smiled up at her, blush dusting her cheeks

Meanwhile, Toko's face was bright red and her mouth was parted in shock. She could barely think. Was she dreaming? This didn't seem real.

"W-why did you…"

"What do you mean 'why'? It's cause I like you of course, Toki" Komaru laughed lightly "I was looking for the right time to tell you, but I guess that's not necessary anymore, huh?"

"You - r-really?"

"Yeah, a lot. I have for a while now…" Komaru's expression suddenly dropped "I'm sorry, I should've asked before I kissed you. If you don't feel the same way I understand-"

"N-no!" Toko interrupted "I mean- Yes, I feel the same! I um…like you too, Omaru…" She quietly confessed, avoiding her eyes. "And don't apologize, that kiss was…r-really nice."

"Oh? Are you saying I'm a good kisser?" The other woman teased

"D-dont let it get to your head! In fact, forget I ever said anything-"

"Aww, cmon!" Komaru pouted "With that attitude maybe I won't kiss you ever again"

"..."

"...I take it back."

"Ha! I knew it! I'm so great of a kisser you can't stand not kissing me~"

"Shut up, Omaru"

Toko placed a hand to the other woman's cheek as she leaned in, finally having a proper kiss. Toko was used to writing passionate kisses in her books, but they paled in comparison to this. Months of uncertainty were lifted off her shoulders, and the feeling of butterflies in her stomach was addicting. The thought of lips pressing together being able to change someone's life seemed laughable, but Toko felt like a new person. A person who loved and was loved.

She isn't sure how long they spent in each other's arms, and she honestly doesn't care. She would've happily stayed like that for eternity if Komaru didn't realize they were late to help out Makoto and the others, the whole reason they were here to begin with, and forced her out of bed.

Toko ignored the knowing smile on Makoto's face when they arrived, hands intertwined.
