Work Text:
Adrien had been acting strange lately, and Damian felt embarrassed for not realizing the reason earlier.
It all started when Adrien seemed to withdraw, becoming quieter and more reserved, a stark contrast to his usual talkative nature. Damian didn't judge him; after all, his boyfriend had been through a lot in his hometown, and if he needed space, Wayne would give it to him.
However, the distance grew, and Damian became certain that Adrien wasn't being honest about the places he frequented. Sometimes, the blond would spend the entire day away without any explanation.
Confirmation came when Damian found a hidden purchase contract in Agreste's drawers. It was for a house very close to Wayne Manor, where they both currently lived.
It didn't make sense, as the Frenchman seemed very happy living with his family - definitely better than his previous life - and for some reason, he liked all his adoptive siblings. Even Jason.
This could only mean one thing: Adrien was leaving him. The conclusion raised a series of questions in his mind: "Did I do something wrong? When will he tell me? How long has he been thinking about this?"
Damian honestly didn't know how to handle all the emotions in his chest; emotions had never been his strong suit, after all. In the end, he decided to focus on the one he understood: anger.
That was exactly why he stood there, watching the guests dance in the hall, with a somber expression while observing Adrien.
His potential future ex-boyfriend, the ray of sunshine he was, dazzled everyone in the room with his charm and natural charisma. No trace of his recent quietness in sight.
"Dan?" the betraying Agreste called out. "Are you okay?"
"Fine," he replied rudely, already impatient with the situation they were in. Who did Adrien think he was to suddenly pretend that everything was okay?
"Alright..." A glimpse of confusion crossed the Frenchman's face, but then a new smile appeared. "Dance with me" he requested and, without waiting for an answer, pulled the dark-haired boy into the midst of the other couples.
Damian huffed but promptly placed his hands around the boy's waist. The familiar butterflies, which he wished he could crush, fluttered in his stomach.
Wayne had always considered Agreste a terrible liar, but there, with Adrien looking at him with what could have been mistaken for genuine love and devotion, the dark-haired boy realized that the blond could only be a great deceiver.
"Just say it already!" Damian had had enough. He was tired of the situation.
"What...?"
"Oh, please, I know, Agreste! I know exactly what you've been hiding from me!"
Some people turned to the couple, intrigued by the argument that was unfolding between the two young billionaires.
"You know?" Adrien blinked, surprised that his secret had been exposed.
"You should have told me straight away, instead of being so cowardly and-!" Wayne interrupted himself when the music stopped, the lights dimming as a spotlight focused on them.
The dark-haired boy blinked, noticing that it was Alfred who had positioned the projector. His boyfriend, however, didn't seem shaken by the sudden change.
Nothing prepared Damian for seeing him kneel down and take a small box from his pocket.
"Dan... I wanted this moment to be special, wanted you to know how much I value and love you. Even though you found out before it was planned, know that I don't regret it for even a second. Damian, veux-tu m'épouser?"
The dark-haired boy didn't trust his own voice to respond to that, merely flashing a wide smile, a rare sight, and nodding before Adrien placed the ring on his finger and stood up to kiss him.
