I said I’m about to go to war, and I don’t know if I’ll see you again

Summary:

A rather short story going into more detail about what I think Link had felt when he had gotten all of the dragon’s tears. I do hope you enjoy! <3

Chapter Text

It happened again.

He had lost everything once more.

The first time he had lost everything, he had woken up with no memory of it. He had woken up to a life already laid out on a script. He had a sword placed in hand, clothes thrown at him, and was told “Go get started,” like it was some small mission. But it wasn’t. He woke up and was expected to save an entire kingdom, defeat entire armies, battle what hasn’t been battled before, and didn’t say a word.

He got memories back, glimpses of who he was before, and who he had been before. Almost every single friend he had made passed away at a snap of a finger. Except for one, and she has been fighting the entire time he has been sleeping.

She fought while he was losing himself in his slumber. As he got his full memories back, he realized something he hadn’t when he had woken up: He was already dead.

His body may have been alive, but his will? His heart? The man he used to be? Gone, just with the rest of them.

But then he realized he still had someone he loved, someone who was still alive that he could still care for and protect.

This drove him to save the one thing he had left, the one person who he could still call his home, his friend, the one person he could still create new memories with and move forward once again.

And just like that, down went Calamity Ganon, and Zelda came back.

She was safe, he was safe, and they both were happy.

Until they weren’t.

Again and again, cycle after cycle, life after life, he loses everything, again and again and again and again.

Zelda was gone, his life was stripped from him once more, and he couldn’t recognize himself in his own reflection.

Things were great, normal, happy, and peaceful, but that changed.

That same man he got back was once again gone, the man who had the only person who could hold his heart with him, who could help him with his pain, who he could hug at night as they both cried from their losses, from their lives being taken away, was gone.

He stared at himself in the water, gazing over his own face. He tried and tried to find something, anything that he could hold onto, something from himself that he had left.

But nothing was found.

The water he looked into stilled after the droplet went in. Oh. Right. This was a tear from a dragon.

But it wasn’t just a dragon. That was everything he had lost again.

The one person he had left was gone.

He looked away from the puddle the dragon’s tear had made and up into the dimly light sky. And there she was. Sailing away through the breezes amongst the land, up in the sky where the clouds hung heavily with more tears to join the one already laid out in front of him.

The light dragon soared away. Silent Princesses sprouted from the ground, surrounding the so-called hero.

Hero. That’s what he was. But was he really?

Heroes could hold onto the people they loved, could defeat any evil and live out their lives peacefully, just like his stories he had read had said. But he could not.

The light dragon wasn’t the only one who wept along with the clouds that night.

He had looked up, towards the last thing he had, and wept. He wept and wept until he couldn’t anymore, watching and saying goodbye to the last thing he had.

The hero was gone, and only a man with an already written fate stood there.
