Chapter Text
“Kaylub, we’re here, honey!”
I wake up as the truck comes to a stop. It was rough being in the back of the truck, but mom wanted someone to watch the stuff. I hop out of the truck and go over to my mom while stretching out the kinks.
“It must be tiring riding with our things in the moving truck. Well, this is Littleroot Town.” I take a look around at the small town. “How do you like it? This is our new home! It has a quaint feel, but it seems to be an easy place to live, don’t you think? And you get your own room, Kaylub! Let’s go inside.” I followed mom inside where some Vigeroth were busy moving boxes and setting things up.
“See, Kaylub? Isn’t it nice in here, too? The Mover’s Pokemon do all the work of moving us in and cleaning up after. This is so convenient! Your room is upstairs. Go check it out, dear! Dad bought you a new clock to mark our move here.” I head upstairs and look around the spacious room that’s void of life since I had to give away many of my plushies for the move. All the room had was a bed, tv, with my game-cube attached, a desk with my laptop and notebook on it, a chair for the desk, the clock, and a map of our new home.
“Kaylub, how do you like your new room?” I shrug. She looks around. “Good! Everything’s put away neatly! They finished moving everything in downstairs, too. Pokemon movers are so convenient!” She heads downstairs as I look around a bit longer.
“Oh! Kaylub, Kaylub! Quick! Come quickly!” I rushed over to my mom after coming downstairs to see her in front of the tv. “Look! It’s Petalburg gym! Maybe dad will be on!” We both look at the tv to see the interviewer ending the report. “Oh…” mom looks downcasted. “It’s over. I think dad was on, but we must have just missed him. Oh, yes.” She brightens up looking at me. “One of Dad’s friends lives in town. Professor Birch is his name. He lives right next door, so you should go over and introduce yourself.”
“Okay.” I head out and go next door where I knock and a lady answers.
“Oh, hello. And you are?”
“I’m Kaylub, I just moved in next door.”
“Oh, hi! We have a son about the same age as you. Our son was excited about making a new friend. He’s upstairs, I think.” She opens the door wider allowing me to come inside.
I head upstairs, but the son isn’t there, but a pokeball is. I go over to the Pokeball and pick it up.
“Hey!” I turn to see a boy slightly taller than me with black hair wearing a white hat with a green trim. “You… who are you?” Before I have a chance to answer he cuts me off. “Oh, you’re my new neighbor, aren’t you? I didn’t know that you’re a girl. Dad, Prof. Birch, said that our new next-door neighbor is a gym leader’s kid, so I assumed you’d be a guy. My name’s Brendan. So, hi, neighbor!”
“Name’s Kaylub, and I am a guy.” He flushes pink in embarrassment.
“Oh, um…” he looks around for something to save him and notices the Pokeball in my hand. “Hey, Kaylub, don’t you have a Pokemon?” I blink at the change in subject.
“No.”
“Do you want me to go catch you one? You know, to make up for my slip-up?” I think about it, but then Brendan snaps his fingers. “Aw, darn, I forgot…” I tilt my head. “I’m supposed to go help my dad catch some wild Pokemon. Some other time, okay?” He goes over to his computer.
“It’s a date.” I see his ears turn pink as I head down the stairs.
As I leave the house, I hear a scream and rush towards the exit of Littleroot Town. I rush by a little girl and see a man in a lab coat getting chased by a Zigzagoon.
“Hello! You over there! Please! Help! In my bag! There’s a Pokeball!” I go over and pick up a Pokeball sending out Torchic.
I have him Scratch the Zigzagoon as all it does is Growl. After the battle, I return him to the Pokeball as the man in the lab coat comes over.
“Whew… I was in the tall grass studying wild Pokemon when I was jumped. You saved me. Thanks a lot!” I nod.
“Oh?” I tilt my head. “Hi, you’re Kaylub. This is not the place to chat, so come with me to my Pokemon Lab.” I nod and follow him back.
“So, Kaylub. I’ve heard so much about you from your father. I’ve heard that you don't have your own Pokemon yet. But the way you battled earlier, you pulled it off with aplomb! I guess you have your father’s blood in your veins after all! Oh, yes. As thanks for rescuing me, I’d like you to have the Pokemon you used earlier.”
“Really?” I look at him in shock. He smiles and nods. “Come on out, Pepper.” He looks up at me as I pick him up with a smile.
“If you work at Pokemon and gain experience, I think you’ll make an extremely good Trainer. My son, Brandon, is also studying Pokemon while helping me out. Don’t you think it might be a good idea to go see him?”
“Do you want me to go see him?” He gives a smile.
“He might be scrambling around in tall grass again somewhere.” I get the hint and head out still holding Pepper.
We go through Route 101 and enter Oldale Town. There’s a Pokecenter and a Pokemart. I can’t go to Route 102 because there’s a guy sketching a rare Pokemon’s footprints which look a lot like his own. I go to Route 103 and see Brandon looking at a patch of tall grass.
“Okay, so it’s this one and that one that live on Route 103…” He turns to me. “Oh, hey!” A faint blush is on his cheek. He then sees Pepper in my arms. “...Oh, Dad gave you a Pokemon. Since we’re here, how about a little battle? I’ll teach you what being a Trainer’s about!” You do recall my dad’s a Gym leader, right?
Pepper jumps out of my arms as Brendan sends out Mudkip. Pepper just uses Scratch as Brendan’s Mudkip uses Tackle. We do win and I hug Pepper.
“Huh, Kaylub, you’re not too shabby.” I look up at him. “I think I get it. I think I know why my dad has his eye out for you now. Look, your Pokemon already likes you, even though you just got it. I get the feeling that you could befriend any Pokemon with ease. We should head back to the Lab.”
“Okay,” He rushes off ahead of me as I follow.
“Oh, hi, Kaylub,” I arrived back at the Lab to see Brandon with his dad. “I heard you beat Brandon on your first try. That’s excellent! Brendon’s been helping with my research for a long time. Brendan has an extensive history as a Trainer already.” He gives me a Pokedex. Brandon gives me Pokeballs.
I head out and head home where mom is waiting.
“Did you introduce yourself to Prof. Birch?” She notices Pepper in my arms. “Oh! What an adorable Pokemon! You got it from Prof. Birch. How nice! You’re your father’s child, all right. You look good together with Pokemon!” She looks away. “To think that you have your very own Pokemon now… Your father will be overjoyed. But please be careful. If anything happens, you can come home. Go on, go get them, honey!” She gives me a hug before I look at Pepper and we head out.
We went to Route 102 where the man figured out that it was his own footsteps he was following.
Passing through we battle 4 trainers before entering Petalburg City. I go to the Pokecenter before heading over to the gym. I enter to see…
“Dad!” I go over to him with a smile.
“Hm. Well, if it isn’t Kaylub!” He looks at me surprised. “So you’re all finished moving in? I’m surprised that you managed to get here by yourself.” He then notices Pepper in my arms. “Oh, I see. You’re with your Pokemon.” He smiles. “Then I guess you’re going to become a trainer like me.” I nod. “That’s great news! I’ll be looking forward to it!” He ruffles my hair with a smile. The door opens as a green haired kid comes in and walks over to us.
“Um… I… I’d like to get a Pokemon, please…” He was slightly taller than me, but was hunched over holding onto his bag as his eyes were glued to the floor.
“Hm? You’re… uh… oh, right. You’re Wally, right?”
“I’m going to go stay with my relatives in Verdanturf Town. I thought I would be lonely by myself, so I wanted to take a Pokemon along. But I’ve never caught a Pokemon before. I don’t know how…”
“Hm. I see.” He looks down at me. “Kaylub, you heard that, right?” I nod. “Go with Wally and make sure he safely catches a Pokemon.”
“Okay.” He nods to me.
“Wally, here, I’ll loan you my Pokemon.” He hands him a Pokeball. Wally gets excited over having a Pokemon. “Hm. I’ll give you a Pokeball, too. Go for it!” He gives him an empty Pokeball as well.
“Oh, wow! Thank you!” Wally then looks at me. “Kaylub… would you really come with me?”
“Yeah, come on.” I smile and take his hand heading us back down to Route 102.
“Kaylub… Pokemon hide in tall grass like this, don’t they?” I nod at him as I let him go once we’re in the tall grass. “Please watch me and see if I can catch one properly.”
“Yeah,” He’s then attacked by a Ralts and I watch him catch the Pokemon.
“I did it… It’s my… my Pokemon!” He looks at me excited as he holds the Ralts Pokeball.
“Yeah, you did it.” He takes my hands with his and smiles at me.
“Kaylub, thank you! Let’s go back to the Gym!” He drags me back with a smile.
“So, did it work out?”
“Thank you, yes, it did. Here’s your Pokemon back.” He hands dad back his pokemon and then looks at me. “Kaylub, thank you for coming along with me.” I blush at his smile. “You two are why I was able to catch my Pokemon. I promise I’ll take really good care of it. Oh! My mom’s waiting for me, so I have to go! Bye, Kaylub!” He then heads off.
“Now…” I look up at my dad to see a knowing look which makes my blush worse. “If you want to become a strong Trainer, here’s my advice. Head for Rustboro City beyond this town. There, you should challenge the Gym Leader, Roxanne. After her, go on to other Pokemon Gyms and defeat their leaders. Collect badges from them, understood?” I nod. “Of course, I’m a Gym Leader, too. We’ll battle one day, Kaylub. But that’s only after you become stronger.”
“I will.” He nods with a smile. I then leave as well.
“Um…” I look down to see a Ralts holding onto my leg. “You were with that boy that caught my brother. Can I go with you?”
“Oh, okay.” I pull out a Pokeball and allow Astro to join the team. I look at Pepper. “Guess we have a new friend.” We exit out the left onto Route 104 and decide to catch a Marill as well.
We battle 3 trainers before entering Petalburg Forest.
We battle a trainer before running into a guy wearing a labcoat.
“Hello, have you seen any Pokemon called Shroomish around here? I really love that Pokemon.”
“I did, actually.” His eyes light up. And he opens his mouth to speak
“I was going to ambush you, but you had to dawdle in Petalburg Woods forever, didn’t you? I got sick of waiting, so here I am!” We look to see a guy in a blue bandana with a blue striped shirt. He rushes over grabbing the shirt of the guy. “You! Devon Researcher! Hand over those papers!” He breaks from his hold and hides behind me.
“You’re a Pokemon Trainer, aren’t you? You’ve got to help me, please!”
“Uh…”
“Hunh? What do you think you’re doing?” The male comes closer looking down at me. His dark eyes glaring deep. “What, you’re going to protect him? No one who crosses Team Aqua gets any mercy, not even a kid! Come on and battle me!” Astro prepares to fight as he sends out a Poochyena.
“Astro, come back.” I switch him out with Blu who takes care of the Poochyena with four Tackles. The male growls as he continues to glare at me.
“You’ve got some nerve meddling with Team Aqua. And, hey, we of Team Aqua are also after something in Rustboro. I’ll let you go today!” He then runs off.
“Whew… that was awfully close! Thanks to you, he didn’t rob me of these important papers. I know, I’ll give you a Great Ball as my thanks!” I take the offered Great Ball. “Didn’t that Team Aqua thug say they were after something in Rustboro, too?” He then runs off as well.
“Well that was interesting.” I looked at Astro who was glaring in the direction that the Aqua guy went in. “You do realize we’re going the same way… right?”
“Yes, but I still don’t like him.” I giggle.
“Let’s get to the Gym.” I get a nod and pick up Astro as we travel along.
We battle one more trainer before leaving the forest. We then travel down the second part of Route 104 battling 5 trainers including a double battle with a set of twins. We entered Rustboro City.
