Eliza lay on her couch, miserable and in a bunch of pain, while a show blared in the background. She had been brought to tears earlier with the utter intensity of her cramps, making her twist and turn in her bed, but they eventually faded, to her relief. She had then left her bedroom in order to watch said show - something Alex recommended, Umbrella something - but the cramps started again. They were thankfully not with the same strength, but still enough to make her writhe around on her couch, barely hearing the kid holding a glass eyeball threaten some man. That’s when she had pulled out her phone and texted Alex.
She now lay on the couch, not wanting to get up and grab pills for the pain, since she had found a position that eased the pain of her cramps. And, she was enjoying watching the junkie - Kristoff, something Amish - threaten the same man - Landon, Lester, Lincoln… she forgot his name.
Eliza heard a knock at her door, and, with much hesitation, got up to get it. The only reason she really did in the first place was because she knew her safe haven was waiting on the other side of that door. With chocolate, hopefully. Who came to her place listening to The Smiths on the subway and drumming his fingers against the poles.
She opened the door to see Alexander, wearing some hoodie he’s probably been living and doing nothing but writing in for three days at most, holding a Shoppers bag and still looking down at his phone, listening to music - she already knew what it was without hearing the notes of ‘Barbarism Begins At Home’ - and typing rapidly. He obviously hadn’t noticed she had opened the door, trapped in his own little world of words and sentences and paragraphs upon paragraphs. She gave him a kiss on the top of his head, and, upon noticing her, his face lit up and he went in for a huge hug. She reciprocated, giving him little kisses on his cheek where she felt the telltale signs he hadn’t shaved.
His lack of self-care was concerning. But, what could she do? She’s already tried, millions of times, to break him out of the self neglecting habit, but to no avail.
“Hi, baby. I’ve missed you,” Eliza said, squeezing Alex as she was wrapped in his arms. He hummed in agreement.
“You have no idea how much I’ve missed you, Bets,” he replied, his sentence muffled from his face being buried in her hair.
She loved her boyfriend to the moon and back.
—-----
They lay on her couch, Eliza laying on Alexander’s lap, a heating pad on her stomach and a box of chocolate resting beside her. A bag of chips sat by her head, where Alex was eating them from (after Eliza scolded him on his weight and asked him to eat something) and watching his show intently, occasionally explaining what was happening and who everyone was when she was confused and asked. Of course she was confused - there was a kid with a number for a name. With Alex there, though, it was much easier to understand the show.
All of a sudden, a thought hit her. A terrible, horrible reminder. She groaned audibly, and Alexander looked down at her questionably.
“What happened, love? Is the show really that bad?” He asked jokingly, a chuckle following. Eliza shook her head, and put her hands over her face.
“No, of course not, it’s just- ugh, I promised a friend of mine I would watch her kids while her and her husband went out, and I don’t have the energy to do that. And, look at the house, it’s a mess , and-”
“Shh, don’t worry, Bets,” Alexander said, shushing her and carding his fingers through her splayed out hair on his legs, “I’ll clean and take care of the little ankle-biters for you.”
“Wh- really?” She asked, in disbelief and utter love for her boyfriend. Her ex wouldn’t even dream of doing something this nice. He waved a hand at her, scoffing.
“Pssh, please. For sure! How hard can it be to take care of a few little kids? Easy peasy!” He said, all too nonchalant to be talking about taking care of kids. “How many?”
“Five.”
“Oh. that- that’s child’s play! I can do that .”
“You know, it’s not as easy as you’re making it out to be,” Eliza said, a hand on his lap.
“Yeah, yeah, I realize the challenge I’ve taken on, now,” he replied, a little fearful. He took her hand and rubbed his thumb up and down it. “But,” he kissed her first knuckle, “anything for you, my dear Bets. Just, make sure you’re getting rest, and if you need anything , come and ask, okay? Besides, I’m experienced in the children field. When are the little tormentors coming?”
She laughed at the name he gave them. “Well, there’s three girls and two boys. Jane - curly haired blonde girl, should be wearing a ponytail, six years old. Amelia - curly haired brunette and unicorn bows, she’s four. Violet - she’s a wavy-haired brunette with glasses, she’s seven. Michael and Ricky, brunet and blond haired boys, they’re twins and they’re nine. Michael is more outgoing than Ricky, though. They’re coming around four.” He nodded, taking in the information, and snickered at a name.
“Does Mike play the drums?” He asked, a smirk on his lips. It took her a second, but when it clicked in, she rolled her eyes and gave him a light slap, all the while he chuckled at his own joke. Then, he got up and made the motions that he wanted to carry her. After she complied, he took her to her bed upstairs, tucked her in and gave her a kiss on the nose.
“Get some rest. You deserve it. I love you too much, Betsey,” he said, giving her one last parting kiss.
“I love you even more, my Hamilton,” she replied. He gave her a smile, then closed the door and went downstairs to start on cleaning.
She rolled over onto her side and smiled at the thought of her lovely boyfriend trying to gain control over five kids. Her eyes felt heavy, and the ache that was so powerful before was now nothing, because someone was there to get her pills when she wasn’t able to.
Eliza’s last thought before sleep consumed her: Her boyfriend was the best man in the whole world.
—------------------
‘Close your eyes and I’ll kiss you
Tomorrow I’ll miss you
Remember I’ll always be true
And then while I’m away, I’ll write home everyday
And I’ll send all my loving to you
I’ll pretend that I’m kissing
The lips I am missing -‘
Knock knock knock!
Alexander slung his headphones around his neck, looking to the direction of the door. He was just finishing up sweeping, and the only thing he would’ve had to do is fix the strewn pillows and blankets from when Eliza was a miserable lump on the couch.
“Just a second!” He called out, before rushing over to the couch and sitting the pillows up, folding the blanket, and taking the chips back to their rightful place in the pantry. He then rushed to the door, before he opened it to a blonde woman who looked to be in her late 20s or early 30s, along with five kids - a brunette girl, a curly-haired brunette little girl, a blond boy, a brunet haired boy, and a curly haired blonde girl. They all stared up at him with an accusatory air to them - except for the blonde curly-haired girl and the boy who he matched as Michael and Jane, who both beamed up at him. The woman frowned at him, seeming confused.
“Hello, sir. Uh- where’s Elizabeth?” She asked kindly.
“Oh, she’s not feeling well today, I’m her boyfriend, Alex. I’m taking over for her today,” he replied with the same tone, gesturing upstairs as he talked about Eliza. The woman nodded her understanding, and she knelt down to give her kids kisses, before she waved her goodbyes to him and got into her car. He waved the kids in the house, to which they shuffled in awkwardly.
“Okay, guys. I see you’ve got bags with you. Did you just want to leave those somewhere?” He asked cheerfully. They nodded, and put them down on a bench Eliza had in the foyer. He beckoned them into the living room, where he then clapped his hands together.
“Okay! What do you guys like? Gimme ideas,” he said. The youngest little girl - Amelia - bounced up to him and tugged at his pants. He knelt down, giving her his attention.
“D’you like to play ‘unicorns’? Or dress up?” She asked hopefully. He smiled and nodded.
“Of course! Are you kidding? Unicorns are the best. And so is dress up! I love those games, thank you.”
“I like video games,” Michael said, and Alex turned his attention to him.
“Yeah? ‘Liza’s got an Xbox, we’ll see what she’s got on there.”
“Ooh, I like video games too!” Jane called, and Ricky nodded his agreement with his brother. The last girl - Violet. She stayed quiet. Alex frowned in her direction.
“You’re Violet, right?” He asked. She nodded silently.
“Violet doesn’t really talk too much. But she likes words - a lot, which is silly ‘cause she never uses them,” Ricky supplied. Alex nodded gratefully to him, before turning back to Violet.
“Alright, words! I like words. I write a lot. You can ask ‘Liza, I’m always basically glued to a computer, typing away - although it is unhealthy, she says,” he said. She nodded, pushing her circular glasses back up her nose. He could tell she was listening, though - he used to be awfully shy himself. He was quiet, but never when it came to his opinions. Or talking about something he loved. “I also wrote a bunch when I was your age. Although, those did get ripped up or lost somewhere - ah, I can’t remember. How about you? Do you write?” He asked again, attempting to prompt her to speak. She shrugged.
“I do, yeah. Just stories to keep to myself, though.”
“That’s fine, I did that too. Oh! Do you like reading?”
“Of course,” she said, a smile on her face.
“Which books? Tell me, I really want to know!” He said, a little too excitedly for an adult, but hey, it’s books. He’s allowed to be excited. She laughed at how happy he sounded.
“Well, I’m reading Pride and Prejudice right now-“
“Are you kidding? I love Pride and Prejudice! Man, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth are adorable together, I’m telling you!” He exclaimed. She nodded enthusiastically.
“They are! I’m almost done and - oh, Jane and Mr Bingley are an adorable couple too! I’m waiting for him to marry her, honestly,” she exclaimed.
They talked about the book for a few seconds more, while the rest of the kids stood, mouths agape, at their sister who almost never talked to strangers, talking to someone she had known for at most, a minute or two. Their conversation died down and Alexander turned to the rest of the kids, while Violet pushed up her glasses.
“Alright, guys,” he called, addressing everyone, “before we start our games, let’s eat first. What’s for dinner today?” He asked. The kids all had one answer: nuggets. He laughed at how in sync the answer was.
“Okay. I’ll go cook ‘em. Someone give me a T.V show,” he said, grabbing the remote and turning it onto the home area, where all of the streaming services were shown.
A bunch of different answers were thrown. But one was way louder than others.
“Let’s watch ‘The Office’!” And that answer made him laugh so hard, he doubled over with guffaws.
“You’re not even old enough to watch that yet!” He said through laughs. Michael laughed along, finding Alexander’s response funny.
“Okay, okay,” Alex said, calming down, “has anyone have any other suggestions?”
“Victorious!” Jane cried. Everyone nodded in agreement, already making themselves comfy on the couch.
“Never heard of that one before. Where do I find that?” He asked. Some of the kids gave him a jokingly incredulous look.
“It’s on Netflix,” Ricky supplied helpfully, once more. Alexander nodded his thanks in his direction, before going to Netflix on Eliza’s T.V, and turning on Victorious. The kids all huddled up together on Eliza’s overly expensive couch that is the comfiest, softest thing he’s ever sat on, while he went to go “cook” the dinner (all he was really doing was heating it up). He fervently searched for the nuggets, knowing they existed - he and Eliza ate a box not even two days ago, but he knew she had more. She had the fun ones - the dino ones. He found them in the bottom cabinet, and went to place them on the tray in order to put them in the oven for them to heat up, before his phone buzzed.
He put the nuggets in quickly, before he checked his phone.

A few hours later, Eliza awoke from a restless nap, full of tossing, turning, and whining to no one over cramps. Suffice to say it was not the best nap she’s ever had. It wasn’t even up on her top five.
After remembering what had happened prior to when she had fallen asleep, she got out of bed, her cramps feeling much better then, and ventured out of her room to the living room downstairs. As she made the journey, she heard the ever present sound of laughter and joy, and some very competitive words coming from a kid or two.
When she reached the bottom, Minecraft was on and she saw Michael almost done on a very masterfully built home, Ricky halfway on a very, very awesome house, Jane was adding finishing touches to this blue castle-looking house, and Alexander - adorned in bows, one of which had a unicorn bow, wearing some very poorly applied eyeshadow and lipstick - building a pretty good house. On his other side, Violet sat and read silently beside him, occasionally talking to him about whatever part of the book she was in, and he stopped what he was doing in order to give her his full attention. Eliza stood staring, amazed at how he had gotten her to talk to him so fast. For Eliza, the third time they came over was when Violet finally started talking to her. In Alex’s lap, playing with dollies, was Amelia. She was making her two dollies talk to each other, and occasionally she’d snuggle herself further into Alexander, while he squeezed his arms around her tighter as well as he could with the remote in his hands.
She was truly amazed at how well he was able to keep the kids in check. She thought he’d get overwhelmed much quicker and give up entirely. And yet - there he was, playing with them and keeping them all happy. He was much better with kids than she would’ve initially thought. She should’ve learned by now, though. Alexander Hamilton was a man full of surprises.
“Hey, guys!” Eliza announced, making herself known to the group. She earned herself waves, and very eager ‘hello’s. Alex looked back, and his face lit up. He placed the controller down, and got up, picking up Amelia and taking her with him. He also attracted Violet, who trailed behind him.
“Hello, Bets. Feeling better?” He asked, giving her a kiss on the head. She nodded, and booped Amelia’s little button nose, to which she scrunched it up and giggled, hiding her face in Alex’s chest. She waved at Violet, who greeted her with a warm smile and a wave back.
“Hey, Violet. How’s your book - wait, I’m assuming you’ve moved onto a new one?” Eliza asked. Violet laughed, and nodded.
“It’s Pride and Prejudice,” Violet responded, before showing her the book, and how the frontside was much thicker than the back.
“So amazing how you can understand that old-timey language. I never got it and, therefore, never cared to try and read older novels.”
“You have to, they’re so good!” Alex squealed, and Violet nodded in agreement. Eliza laughed at how silly her boyfriend was.
“Alexander is correct, you need to read older novels. If not any other ones, then at least Pride and Prejudice.”
“Got it. Maybe Alex can read it to me, and then translate?” She asked, asking it to Violet’s face, but directing it to Alexander. He gasped, as though it was the biggest honour he could’ve ever been given.
“Really? Of course!” He exclaimed, to which both Violet and Eliza laughed. They then headed back to the couch when Michael and Ricky called out for Alex so that he could continue playing. Eliza headed to the couch, where Jane sat. Jane was the kid she found herself talking to a lot, as she was pretty outgoing and overall very fun to talk to. And Amelia - well, who couldn’t love Amelia? She usually snuggled her while she babbled about unicorns and princesses and what her dollies were doing, and Eliza found it the cutest thing. But since Alex stole her, she was left with no snuggles for today. Michael and Ricky weren’t unkind in the slightest. They weren’t a handful like most of the boys she used to take care of for old friends. They were very calm guys, and they liked Minecraft, which they taught her how to play. It was either Minecraft or Roblox, a game they also taught her how to play (her favourite game was Bloxburg, and they did bully her for that. She explained to them that her favourite game was The Sims 4, and they immediately understood).
So, she sat down beside Jane, and curled her legs beside her while she watched them all play their game, giving commentary and making jokes with them.
———
Eliza lay curled up on her couch, her head in Alexander’s lap with Alex’s hand in her hair, massaging her scalp lightly. They were both making the other listen to their music and favourite artists, alternating who chose the song. So, Mitski played from her HomePod. She hummed along to whatever song played, scrolling through her phone and occasionally talking to Alex about nothing. At that moment, ‘Everyone’ was playing, and Alex really liked Laurel Hell because it gave him an 80s vibe - which, of course, he loved. After Blue Light (her pick) , he had requested a Tears for Fears song - The Way You Are - and he sang along as well as he read an article on his phone. She herself didn’t find the song bad at all. They now sang to Everyone together.
When Lauren came to pick the kids up, they were very reluctant to leave. After figuring out how much Alex had helped by the kids and herself, Lauren had paid Alex as well. His eyes lit up at the fifty dollar bill in his hands, and he thanked her greatly.
Then, of course, Alex gave Elizabeth her bowl of nuggets he had saved her. And Eliza decided to do what she had texted Alex, and they went to listen to music together, starting off strong with Rebel Yell by Billy Idol (Alexander’s choice) and then Thursday Girl by Mitski, which brought them to the present time.
Eliza couldn’t help but say it countless times, over and over and over until the world got tired of hearing it and then some more times. She loved Alexander Hamilton. She loved his face, his sweet little smile when he sees her at any given time, his hair, the way he was so passionate about the things he loved, his beautiful eyes, his voice, his lips, his nose, his everything.
She loved his everything, and she knew that he loved her back just as much, because he would do anything for her - like, watch five rowdy children because she wasn’t able to, or send her letters - rather than texts - every Wednesday when she needed them the most and hadn’t seen him in a while, due to him overworking and staying at his office for way more than was necessary. Or, he’d save up money to buy Eliza a doll she had and loved when she was younger that was discontinued, off of another website for almost 500 dollars - that was way more than he could afford - for her birthday. He cared so much, and he deserved more than the world. And she was so happy that she had him, so happy that he was her boyfriend.
So happy that they stood in her living room, slow dancing to Two Slow Dancers, which then morphed into Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me.
“D’you think we’ll be good parents when we have kids?” Alexander whispered to her. She smiled at the question, and nodded.
“Absolutely. We’ll have seven, and they’ll all love reading, writing and sewing. They’re going to have the best parents. Especially their dad.” Alexander smiled at her words, his grin widening at the last sentence.
It was important to reassure Alexander that he was going to be an amazing dad, and that he wasn’t going to turn into his father. That was his biggest fear when it came to parenting. He wanted to avoid following his father’s footsteps at all cost, and instead show the kids they were loved. The cardinal rule was: don’t walk out.
“Agreed. And they’ll be raised on 80s music, and Mitski. And we can show them The Umbrella Academy,” Alexander said, Morrissey’s lyrics filling Eliza’s living room.
“And we’ll put all of our love into raising them,” she whispered, resting her head on Alex’s shoulder as they swayed to the song.
“That we will,” he agreed.
