Chapter Text
During what should have been a normal and completely uneventful political mission, there was an assassination attempt against Obi-wan's life. He didn’t have any of his troopers with him, not even Commander Cody who rarely left his side. Thankfully he did have Anakin and Captain Rex with him during said mission, so when the assassin shot barely missed Obi-wan's head, he had someone to pursue the target.
Anakin didn’t miss a beat and immediately ran in the direction of the shot, Rex followed quickly after. Obi-wan was physically fine, other than a new scar on his cheek from the missed blaster shot. But he was mentally scattered. Sure, he gets shot at a lot, he is a war general after all. But this trip had been peaceful and almost easy the entire week that the trio had been there. He wasn’t aware of when he let his guard down, and that’s all it took. A small second of calm was enough time for an enemy to take him down. He wasn’t upset or startled because he nearly got his head blown off, but because he didn’t sense it first. Shaking himself out of it, he followed in the direction of the blast in an attempt to catch up with the other two.
The three had no luck in catching whoever had tried to kill Obi-wan, and knowing whoever the culprit was was still out there didn’t sit well with the rest of them. Obi-wan insisted on staying to finish what he came there to do, however both Anakin and Rex agreed that they would be fine on their own and that it would be safer for Obi-wan to return to the Negotiator.
Somehow, they got him to agree.
Obi-wan boarded a small transport ship that the local politician was more than happy to provide, and Rex made sure to call Cody to inform him of the situation.
Cody was in the general's quarters working on datapads when he received the call from Rex. In any other situation he would’ve been happy to answer a call from one of his favorite brothers, but he knew that Rex was accompanying both of the generals on a mission. A mission that was supposed to be smooth sailing the entire time. Supposed to be being the key phrase. Cody was a natural worrier, especially when it came to his General. So, when Rex called, he was expecting the worst. Still, he answered the call, allowing the bright blue light of the hologram to fill the somewhat dark room.
“General Kenobi is headed back to the Negotiator-”
“Is he alright?” Cody interjected. He could see Rex doing his best to not roll his eyes.
“Physically, yes. But there was an assassination attempt against him. General Skywalker and I agreed that it was safest to send him back.”
Cody nodded along before his brain registered what Rex had just said, “An assassination attempt! Did you catch the culprit?”
“Still working on it. General Skywalker is going to finish up the political negotiations while I continue to look for whoever fired the shot. I’ll update you if I can, just thought you’d like to know about your Generals return.”
“It is appreciated, you better catch that scum.”
Rex nodded on the other line and the call ended.
Cody was pleased that his general was coming home after being gone for an extended period of time. But he never imagined it would be because of an assassination attempt. Everyone knew that Kenobi had enemies, he did have a strange habit of making them without meaning to. But the only ones that were dumb enough to attack him were Darth Maul and Grievous, and neither of them were that good at stealth.
Attempting to focus purely on the fact that the general was returning, he left the room and went to tell the rest of the 212th the situation.
Upon the General's arrival, everyone looked worried but not as tense as usual. Except for Cody who never took his eyes off of the Jedi. Rex had told him that Obi-wan wasn’t physically injured, but he couldn’t help but stare at him like he had just lost a limb.
“Alright alright, everyone out of the way, Medic coming through” Helix’s voice knocked Cody out of his spiraling thoughts, but he still kept his eyes on his general. He watched as Helix walked up to Kenobi and began doing simple tests on him.
“Helix, I assure you that I’m fine.” Obi-wan smiled, oh how Cody missed that smile.
“Sir, with all due respect, you say that even when you’re actively bleeding out so forgive me for not believing you right away. Plus, Cody told us the situation, so I just want to be sure” Helix said flatly as he checked for any broken bones. Obi-wan just let out a soft chuckle.
“Well, this time I mean it. The entire week has been quite peaceful, except for that last bit. But whoever it was is a terrible shot. Barely grazed my face.” Obi-wan pointed to the new but still very small red line that now rested on top of his cheek bone. Helix moved his hand to inspect the General's face.
“Is that seriously the only injury you got the entire week?” Helix asked, not believing it for a second. Obi-wan nodded, making Helix cross his arms with a look that was both skeptical and kind. “I think that’s a new record General. If it really is just that scratch, then you’re free to go.”
“Thank you, Helix,” Obi-wan chuckled lightly at his medic before turning to the rest of the troops that came to see him, “I assure you all that I’m perfectly fine. I do appreciate you all being so concerned but for now I think I’m just going to rest in my room for a while. If anything comes up don’t hesitate to tell me”
And with that he walked off. Cody watched him walk away, and only turned to look anywhere else once the doors closed behind the general and he was no longer in sight. Most of the others had already dispersed, now in high spirits seeing their general back with them and somehow completely uninjured. Cody however, could still feel his whole body tense up.
The culprit was still out there, and he couldn’t do anything about it. For what seemed like the tenth time that day, he tried to focus on the fact that the general was lucky enough to still be alive. That's what was bothering him. He got lucky. What if the culprit wasn’t such a terrible shot. What if something had actually happened to the General. The last time the 212th got news like this, it was when Kenobi had to go undercover and fake his own death. Cody had truly lost a part of himself that day. Eventually he learned that the general was fine, but it put certain things in a new perspective. There may be a day where he hears that same news, and it isn’t just another terrible plan from the council. It would be real. There might come a time where Cody loses his beloved general for real. He couldn’t bear the thought.
Without another word to the remaining troopers in the hangar, Cody headed towards the general's quarters. He needed to see him. He needed to hold him. His worries and thoughts consume him the entire walk to Obi-wan's room. Before he realized it, he was already at the door. On any normal day, Cody would knock before being allowed entry or simply announce his presence as he put in the door code. Today was not a normal day. He put in the key code and stepped through the door, completely unannounced.
As he entered, he was met with the sight of Obi-wan sitting at the desk looking over the datapads that Cody had been working on earlier. Once Cody heard the doors close behind him, he felt his shoulders relax ever so slightly. Knowing that he no longer needed to put up the professional Commander persona.
“Obi-wan…” is all that he said as he walked over to stand behind the Jedi.
Hearing his name knocked him out of whatever thought he was invested in. He turned around in his chair and looked up at his commander. “Oh Cody- I’m sorry I didn’t hear you come in.”
“It’s alright, I’m the one who entered your room unannounced. But Obi-wan…” Cody leaned down and placed a light kiss on top of the other man's head. “Didn’t Helix tell you to rest?”
“He said I was free to go-”
“And then you said you were going to rest.”
“Ah. I supposed I did say that...”
Cody stood up straight with a sigh, “Then come rest with me”. His smile was calm and kind, the exact smile that Obi-wan fell in love with. A smile that was reserved for Obi-wan and Obi-wan only. The jedi couldn’t help but smile back.
“Alright you win.”
The jedi stood up as Cody began unclipping his armor. Obi-wan had already changed into his more comfortable robes, so he took no time in moving over to help Cody out of his armor. Their movements were slow and symbiotic. They had done this dance many times before at different speeds. Sometimes it felt like they couldn’t get the commander out of his armor fast enough. And sometimes it took longer to avoid any further injury, almost as if the armor was the only thing keeping the commander's body intact. But tonight, was different, tonight was quiet and intimate. It was strange how soft just helping Cody out of his armor had become.
Once the Commander was fully out of his armor, Obi-wan snaked his arms around his neck. Cody smiled at the gesture and leaned forward, allowing their foreheads to touch as he placed his hands on Obi-wans waist. The pair hadn’t said a word since Obi-wan stood up from his chair. They simply let the presence of the other wash away all their worries and doubts. They didn’t feel the need to fill the empty space with words, just being together was enough.
Obi-wan felt a wave of exhaustion wash over him, and he fell deeper in the commander’s arms. As he rested his head on Cody’s shoulder, Cody moved one of his hands up to play with the Jedi’s hair.
“I apologize for worrying you my dear. I know how upset you got last time something like this happened.” Obi wan finally said.
“You’re alive. That’s all that matters. Yes, I’m happy that you’re not injured, but even if we were having this conversation in the medbay, I would still be grateful that you were still alive.”
“I know that, but I still apologize for making you worry so much.”
Cody carefully pulled Obi-wan out of the hug, just enough to look him in the eyes, placing a careful hand on his cheek. “ Ner kar'taylir darasuum , why do you feel the need to apologize every time you get hurt. This is war and you didn’t ask for this, none of us did. So none of this is your fault.”
The commander knew all too well how quick Obi-wan was to apologize for things beyond his control. He would apologize for the number of missions they got sent on, any injuries (his own or others), for any fallen trooper, for just about anything Anakin did, and even for being emotional in front of no one else by Cody.
Obi-wan just let out a tired sigh and looked down. He knew that Cody was right and was far too mentally exhausted to refute it at the moment. Cody took that as a cue to walk him over to the bed. He laid down first and held the blanket up for Obi-wan to lay next to him. Once Obi-wan was comfortable, Cody moved over to rest his head on his chest. Their limbs naturally tangled together, as if their bodies were molded to fit next to each other like a perfect puzzle. Obi-wan rested his chin on top of Cody’s hair, taking in the smell of his shampoo. The smell was generic but Obi-wan loved it all the same. The jedi allowed one of his arms to rest on Cody’s back, while the other cupped his face. Cody hummed at the touch.
"If you're going to be this affectionate every time I'm nearly killed, maybe I'll have to start doing it more often."
Cody was knocked out of his peaceful thoughts and quickly moved his body up, using his arms to keep him propped up as he hovered over the ridiculous jedi. His face contorted to an uneasy expression. "Please don't-"
"It was only a joke, cyare . I would never want to intentionally worry you, and I know exactly how I can be in the reverse situation."
Cody sighed as he felt his body relax once again. “Not funny”
“Please, you think I’m hilarious” Obi-wan smirked, Cody just rolled his eyes.
“The jury’s still out about that I think.”
Obi-wan feigned an offended look before the pair busted into a small fit of laughter. Cody had the perfect view of Obi-wan's face. He watched as the Jedi's nose scrunch up as he laughed. The lines around his closed eyes became more prominent. He got to feel Obi-wan's chest going up and down as he laughed. Not to mention the sound of pure joy coming from his lips. Cody fell in love all over again.
As Obi-wan opened his eyes and began to come down from his fit of laughter, Cody leaned down and pressed their foreheads together.
"I just can't lose you…Not after everything. I know that missions are rough, and this is war, but please do your best to stay alive."
"I could say the same for you my dear, I don't know what I would do if I lost you."
Cody wanted to refute Obi-wan's words as he often did by bringing up the fact that he was literally created for the purpose of dying in the war. But after the day that they both have had, he thought it was better to not bring it up. Instead, he moved his head down to place a light kiss on Obi-wan's lips.
"Just for tonight...let's pretend that there is no war, no paperwork, no reckless troopers or even more reckless Jedi generals. Just us."
"I'd like that.”
Obi-wan wrapped his arms around the commander's neck before pulling him down for another kiss. Tonight was just about the two of them.
