Work Text:

Mary macdonald was never a fan of quidditch herself. She found herself complaining about going to watch it with Lily on the way to the field
“Well maybe you should try to be more interested in your boyfriend and his hobbies I don't know, it probably hurts his feelings when you're ignoring him Mary” Lily said with a wince,m mary knew she didn't believe any of that but then again lily didn't DO relationships for reasons like this, it wasn't a sacrifice she was willing to make, at least not now
Lily was always smarter at knowing what she wanted, and being content. Mary just let herself be dragged around by others and told what to do.
“Ugh fine! Come on let's go watch then, I mean he is kinda hot when he flies.” she admitted, the lie passing effortlessly through her lips
“At Least you’re there for him” she says rolling her eyes with a smile
“Wait, why are you coming?”
“He's on the same team as Em, and Marlene always watches her train, so I thought we could join and watch her as well”
“Okay, Em is always entertaining to watch.” she replied with a smirk
Lily just snorted “definitely”
Mary never fully understood why when watching the Hufflepuffs she was always more drawn to one of her not-very-close-but-she-liked-her friends than her boyfriend. But she was amazing during the games, fast, humorous, strong and nimble. Mary could swore she could watch her for days

PRESENT
“Okay, now that I think of it I may have had a bit of a crush on you since like fifth or sixth year.” mary eventually admits, wine in hand slumped on the arm of one of their couches, leaning on vance not nearly as tipsy
“Really?” she said disbelieving
“Yeah! I think so, do you remember my boyfriend in fifth year, hufflepuff, I don't remember his name-”
“Pff, yeah he was a bit of an asshole, quidditch captain right?”
“Yeah, well when me and Lils went to watch quidditch practice to show our support for him I think i'd always end up watching you. You were just so much more interesting.” she sighed, god she was drunk but when she saw Emmeline she was pleased to find her face was flustered and earnest
“Really?”
“Oh my- yes! Why is that so hard to believe, you were so kind, you never judged, and fucking good at sports! You made quidditch interesting for me, you know." After a moment of silence she then said “ but don’t let Mckinnon know that, she's great you know but like quidditch just- meh!”
“I don’t disagree.” Emmeline mumbled
“What do you mean?” Mary asked, intrigued
“Well back in my old school, in France I mean we didn't really play much quidditch like it was there, but we had a more racing sort of sport on brooms, like what you would do is race on through the grounds and dule others practically it's not as clean cut with rules on like contact and all. Which comes to a surprise to a lot especially because its this posh all girls french school but yeah that's how they do it there. Way cooler, that's why I’m better at flying.” she says with a wink
“Oh wow.” mary utters snarkily, then looks thoughtfully at Emmeline
“I would love to see you play that, it kind of sounds like roller derby.”
“What's that?” Mary took a short intake of breath in, just the way she easily looked at her with the most sincere eyes that was gentle but actually invested, Mary didn't know why she found it attractive (she was a bit ignored as a child, could that be a factor in this?)
“Well, it's sort of like roller skating in 2 teams around a rink and they kind of like try to get past each other?” she started laughing inn embarrassment
“I'm sorry I don't even know why I'm the one explaining the rules, I've never played, only ever watched it a couple times”
“That's fiiiine, it sounds cool though from your” she waved her hand “very descriptive and informative explanation”
“Hey!” she gave her a light shove
“Not all of us are interested enough in sports to remember the rules”
“You're right, fine, I'm sorry. You were probably just too interested in one of the players’ asses instead” she replied with raised eyebrows, Mary fake gasped and shoved her right off the couch, not knowing at one point Emmeline had entangled their feet, dragging her down to the ground as well. Leaving them, in a tangled heap
“You are… not wrong” she eventually said lying on top of Emmeline to pin her down
“At Least i would never fall into one of the towers, ogling my girlfriend of a Month!”
“You're a monster” the other girl replied, low humorous whisper
“Mhmmm”
“That wasn't fair, she was really pretty that day, she did something different with her hair and he dress was like gor-”
Mary shut her up with a scowl and crossed arms, sitting up on Emmelines lap
“Shit.”
She uttered, causing mary to giggle
“What have I done” Emmeline spoke fake solemnly
“I have offended my lady’s honour-”
“Your lady hu?”
That caused Emmeline to start spluttering and turn away, they had been like this for around 5 months now. Mary doesnt remember the change in their relationship but it had evolved from moral support to good friends, to this, flirting, extra touching, sharing beds.
“I mean…”
“What if we went on a date?”
“What! You want to go on a date with me?”
“Emmeline.” she said with s sigh
“I've had a crush on you since school. I mean not the whole 7 years but still, and we both like each other’s personalities, we have also had countless conversations about how we take care of one another . Have you not seen us?” she had now crouched beside Emmeline, holding her hands in her own
“Would you Emmeline Vance, go on a date with me?”
“I mean if you wan-” and that was when, Mary took Emmeline's face in her hands, looking into her eyes before she brought her into a kiss. Almost immediately she was kissed back, and she felt the other girl’s fingers thread through her hair, but eventually she broke away with a smile
“Roller derby?” she was a little dumbstruck, not expecting Emmeline to reciprocate like that
“Wha-”
“Our first date, from what you said it so doesn't sound as classy but it could be fun” she suggests with a tilt of her head
“Definitely” she smiles back, feeling her face spread into a grin
Holy shit, how could she ever think she was into guys!
