Free Day

Summary:

“You wanted a house,” Katsuki reminded her as the elevator chimed, “so Daddy is getting his girls a house.” He pressed a kiss to Ochako’s forehead before kissing his daughter and exiting the elevator.

Notes:

A/N: I can't believe this is the end you all! We did it! At the beginning of last week I didn't have Day 7 and Day 8 done, but we made it. I can look a little less crazy now. Maybe.

Enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Are you sure?”

Katsuki frowned, looking at Ochako as he adjusted the baby strapped against his chest. “Why the hell wouldn’t I be?” he asked quietly as they walked down the street. It wasn’t terribly difficult for them to be anonymous among the crowd.

No one would expect to see Dynamight with a newborn baby strapped against his chest.

Ochako had her hair tucked neatly under a baseball cap. She had on a boring grey shirt dress with old white sneakers. “I dunno. Won’t be terribly exciting,” she shrugged with a slight smirk as they approached the large building, “you don’t have to take paternity leave.”

“I’m not gonna abandon you two.” He looked down at the sleeping infant, rubbing a finger against a chubby cheek. The baby’s lips twitched, pinching together and showing off the little dimple on her left.

Just like her mother.

“The doctor said you’re supposed to be taking it easy-”

“Easy-ish,” Ochako shrugged as they stepped into the building. She looked over at their daughter with a smile. “I have to keep up with the little sweet chili.”

Katsuki grunted, “We are not calling her that.”

“Already have been,” she grinned. “Oh, you’re gonna have to be nice to Yo.”

“Nope.” Katsuki knew he wasn’t a bad guy. He’d been there for Ochako and the baby when he couldn’t. “Not happening.” Even though he’d never be able to say it, Katsuki liked to think that he and Yo had a silent understanding of his gratitude.

She rolled her eyes playfully as they stepped into the elevator. “Well about what I was saying before, it’s okay if you work,” she assured.

“Naw. Some time off will be good.” Katsuki couldn’t remember the last time he’d willingly taken a personal day.“We need to look for a house.”

“I thought we were just gonna stay at your apartment.”

“You wanted a house,” Katsuki reminded her as the elevator chimed, “so Daddy is getting his girls a house.” He pressed a kiss to Ochako’s forehead before kissing his daughter and exiting the elevator.

“Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight,” the receptionist nodded with a tight smile and not giving him a real look over, “nice to see you. I’ll tell Best Jeanist you’re here.” He picked up the phone. “He’ll be relieved to know you’re not missing or dead.”

“Naw,” Katsuki stopped him. “Wanted to surprise him.” He gestured down to the baby against his chest.

The receptionist’s jaw dropped at the sight of the baby. “Oh my god,” he gasped, cooing, “is that-” He paused, pointing at Katsuki, who couldn’t keep the proud grin off his face.

“Wait, dead or missing?” Ochako snapped her attention to Katsuki. “Why would you be dead or missing?”

Katsuki shrugged with a mischievous smirk. “Well, you might have called me while I was having lunch with my parents-”

“Katsuki! Why didn’t you say anything!?” Of course he hadn’t said anything. “You didn- It’s been over a week!!”

“I ran out without really saying much of anything to anyone.” Katsuki hadn’t.

He’d been so focused on Ochako and the baby that he hadn’t bothered with the outside world. The only reason Rumi knew was because she had come to check on Ochako. She’d been surprised to see Katsuki there, but she hadn’t said anything to convey her shock.

She simply grinned and informed him that if he wanted paternity leave that he could apply, and she’d push the paperwork through as fast as she could.

Also that there must have been a miscommunication about him taking a sick day, so that would explain why he hadn’t shown up for his last shift. For now, Katsuki was using his sick and recovery time but Rumi had given him a day free so lighten how much time he used.

“Call your mother,” Ochako gasped. “Now!”

Katsuki laughed, “How are you just realizing this shit?”

“Does she know about the baby?” Ochako’s parents knew their grandchild had arrived and would be visiting at the end of next week, but they didn’t know about Katsuki.

“Eh-”

Bakugo. Katsuki!”

“I was just planning on sitting the kid on her doorstep with a little note,” he grinned, gently nudging her shoulder as they walked toward Tsunagu’s office. “Surprise them.”

Ochako shook her head as she tried not to smile.

He draped an arm over her shoulder.

“We are going to your parents’ house after we leave here,” she insisted.

“Depends how you’re feeling.” Ochako had stayed in the hospital for a few days before they’d gone back to Katsuki’s apartment. The two of them had spent the last couple days balancing a life with a newborn and each other.

They had a lot to figure out.

“Doc said you’re supposed to be taking it easy,” Katsuki reminded her.

She hummed, “They also said that walking was important.” Ochako had been shocked when they got her out of bed twelve hours after the procedure. It had been strange getting up, but it felt good to be on her feet. “I feel good. I think walking helps with the swelling in my legs, ya know?”

“Just sat down for a minute when we get in there, alright?” he told her, looking back at her.

“Yes, Daddy,” she teased as she followed him inside the office.

He rolled his eyes with a smile. “Oi, Denim,” Katsuki called out.

Tsunagu sighed, not bothering to look up at him. “Katsuki, I swear,” he closed his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose as he tilted his head up. “You know, I am very much looking forward to whatever explanation you have for-” His eyes opened, shock making his body go limp at the sight of his protege with a baby strapped against his chest.

“Hello, sir,” Ochako nodded politely from behind him. She gave a little bow.

He stared in shock, eyes wide as he waited for Katsuki to explain.

“Wanted you to meet my family,” Katsuki grinned cockily. The hand cradling the back of the baby wiggled, making sure he could see the silver ring around the fourth finger of his left hand.

Tsunagu scrambled out of his chair and slowly made his way over.

One thing at a time.

He peered into the wrap gasping at the sight of chubby little cheeks and unruly blonde hair.

“Wanna hold her?”

“No, I-” He wanted nothing more. “She’s asleep, and-”

“She’s milk drunk and will probably be out until the next feed.”

He looked over to Ochako to make sure it was okay.

“You should hold her,” she encouraged softly as she eased down into one of the chairs in front of the desk.

Katsuki carefully pulled her out of the wrap. She was dressed in a simple coral-footed onesie patterned with various flowers and petals.

Tsunagu held out his arm gently, cradling her.

“Her name,” Katsuki started, pulling out a little sheet of paper with three kanji symbols written on it, “is Noriko.”

Tsunagu looked at the paper, seeing the first symbol in the little girl’s name was the same as Shinya’s. “Noriko,” he whispered, looking at the baby as he felt his eyes well up with tears.

“Ah, shit,” Katsuki cursed, trying to laugh off everything that he was feeling as well, “you don’t need to cry about it.”

He chuckled as his tears followed with a nod. “She’s perfect.” Tsunagu looked over at Katsuki and Ochako. “Thank you.”

“We know godparents aren’t traditionally done here, but we would like you to be Noriko’s godfather,” Ochako explained softly.

“Or extra grandpa, whatever,” Katsuki added casually. “We wanted to make sure she knew that you and Edgeshot are the reason I get to be her dad.”

“I-” Tsunagu swallowed as Noriko opened her eyes for a moment, letting him catch a glimpse of gray he hadn’t seen in years. He laughed wetly as he nodded. “I would like to think I’m to young to be a grandfather, but I would be honored to be her godfather.”

“This is cruel.”

“Woman, you waited until after you were out of the hospital to let Izuku know the baby was born. Don’t you dare judge me?”

Ochako laughed as she adjusted the little bow in Noriko’s hair. “No. Can you say Mama was busy?” she cooed softly as the baby slept. “Yeah, Mama was busy. She was. So busy with you.” She looked at Katsuki. “Your mother is gonna kill you.”

“Tch,” he snorted as he carried the baby carrier toward the front door, “once she realizes she gets to spoil Nori, I think all my sins, past, present, and future, will be forgiven.” He placed the carrier on the store step and placed the note in Noriko’s lap. He gently smoothed a couple fingers over her forehead and brushed back some of her hair back.

Years ago he said that he hadn’t wanted children.

“You ready? Ochako grinned, holding out her hand for him.

Katsuki grinned, seeing the plain thin silver band on her finger. He grabbed her hand. “Always.” He promised he’d get her a real ring and more than an appointment at city all.

Ochako insisted it was real because it was him and that she wouldn’t say no to a big fancy wedding cake.

His finger brushed over the band as he hit the doorbell with his other hand.

“Think they’ll be surprised?” Ochako asked as they stepped to the side.

“Yes and no,” Katsuki shrugged as they waited. His parents always knew to expect the unexpected with him. Even though Katsuki was methodical, everything about him was unplanned.

From birth to the appearance of his quirk.

The door creaked open. “Hello, who- oh?” Mitsuki gasped.

Katsuki snorted as he could hear slippers shuffling back in surprise.

His parents had known he’d make waves in high school, but they could have never anticipated how. They were sure of his academic success, but they’d been surprised at the man he’d become.

“Masaru!?” Mitsuki called out loudly. “There’s a baby at the door and-” She picked up the note. “Grandhag?”

“Yep,” Katsuki confirmed as he stepped into view with Ochako.

Mitsuki looked back down at the baby sleeping in the career as Masaru stepped behind her.

“I was free today, so I figured I’d introduce you to my wife and daughter,” Katsuki shrugged, unable to keep himself from smiling.

Ochako nodded, flushed at his parents' shocked faces as she bowed politely. “Nice to see you again, Bakugo-san.”

Mitsuki just stared, clutching the note against her chest. Masaru hadn’t looked away from the baby. He stared at Noriko like she was going to disappear any second.

“Surprise,” Katsuki grinned.

End.
