Work Text:

"Hello traitor, how's life on the USS Titan? This is Beckett Mariner speaking by the way, you know your friend and mentor you left behind without even bothering to say goodbye? The one you've been ignoring for months? You know I should have should have known that it was going to be like this…you're the type who'd rather spend your time sucking up to anyone higher in the hierarchy, the type who'll do anything to form a relationship with those who can lift you up and then leave them behind like that when they're not useful anymore, you probably don't even listen to these messages right? Just delete them all without listening, because who cares who's left behind right? You want to know the first impression I had of you? Just a random kiss-ass, but then I thought I saw something else, someone who could really be a friend, a companion…I don't know in theory you were so boring, such a stickler for the rules, but I always ended up having so much fun when I was with you, no matter how boring the assignment for the day was I knew it wouldn't be so bad if you were there. And you had fun too, I know you did, it couldn't have been just me. Right? The first few weeks after you left I kept thinking of things I wanted to say to you out of nowhere, silly things like commenting on something stupid Ransom said or some idea I had for my next break, and then I remembered that I hate you and that you're an asshole who won't even answer my calls. And I kept hoping it would stop happening, but no, months and out of nowhere and I kept thinking of things I wanted to say to you. I'm still waiting for it to end. You're an asshole and I wish you were here, it’s so ridiculous, I've never been like this before, not even after breaking up with my exes, and I've dated some pretty attractive people in the past, and you're not even an ex, fuck you're not even my type. You're just the person I want to see every day. And with my exes I was usually the asshole that went away and didn't bother to say goodbye, maybe you're my karma. Anyway I'm calling you today not just to yell at you after drinking too much Romulan whiskey but to tell you that I won’t be calling you anymore, and yes I know I said that before but I mean it this time. I'm tired of yelling at the void, I'm tired of missing you and having it mean nothing."

Boimler was silent for a few seconds after the message ended, then he said for the computer to play the message again.

He did this many times before it was time for his shift at the bridge to start.
