Work Text:
Blair and Nate were at a ball organized to raise funds from wealthy contributors for his campaign when he asked her to dance.
She accepted. But as soon as they were far enough away from the other pairs Blair said:
“You should have asked someone else to dance , you know you already have my money and Chuck's.”
“I'll go after…talking about him when will he arrive?”
"I don't know if he'll make it to be honest."
"I understand."
“So it that why you asked me to dance? Because I look pathetic and lonely?”
“You don’t look pathetic.”
“But lonely yes?”
“A little, but I think it was more because I wanted to.”
"Flattery will take you everywhere, I had my doubts but maybe you chose the right career after all."
"Maybe."
“You should get married you know? It is still quite rare to see politicians at the executive level who are not married with two point five children.”
"I don't have a girlfriend at the moment in case you haven't noticed, this is usually a primary requirement for proposing to someone."
“But you've had several in the past. Have you ever thought of marrying one of the women you dated?”
"Yes."
"Who?"
He looked at her in disbelief for a moment. And Blair stared at him for a few seconds before the penny dropped.
“Oh right. I. Sometimes I forget that we used to date, isn't that weird?"
"Yes it is. But I can't blame you, sometimes I forget too."
“Funny to think that if we stayed together maybe I would be on the verge of becoming the first lady of New York.”
"We wouldn't be happy together if it had been like that, I wouldn't have been a good husband to you, I know that."
“Yes, but is that so different from how things are now? I know that I don't feel particularly happy with my life or at least my marriage. Are you happy?"
“Not really, but I don't hate you and even better you don't hate me. That is good."
“Yes it is, but still: Blair Archibald, First Lady of New York. It has such a nice ring to it.”
Nate laughed, and so did she. And he danced with her for two more songs before going back to socializing with potential contributors.
