Chapter Text
Lily's day had been going perfectly fine.
She had woken up at 6 AM to do her skincare routine and do her hair and makeup. She decided to do an all natural look that day.
Then Mary woke up and joined her in the bathroom. Mary started on her (less complicated) skincare routine and took her hair out of the bonet she had slept in. Mary and Lily didn't really talk these mornings, but that was fine. Lily liked it being quiet in the morning.
Then 10 minutes before they had to leave for breakfast they woke up Marlene. Marlene loved sleeping and didn't really bother on getting ready before breakfast. She usually got ready in her first class, if she didn't skip it.
The three girls had walked down to the Great Hall together, chatting and gossiping about anything. Lily didn't really know much, but Mary and Marlene knew everything there was to know and happily filled Lily in.
They had sat down at their usual spot on the Gryffindor table and waited for the boys to arrive. They were always ready before the boys.
When they finally arrived they sat down at the table. Lily smiled up at James and offered him a seat next to her. He smiled back and sat down at the spot.
This was also a thing. Lily Evans, after years and years of love notes and loud love confessions, had fallen for James Potter. And she was pretty confident that James liked her back. He had to. Right?
After breakfast they walked to their first class of the day. Lily had potions.
The rest of the day went on as it normally would, nothing really interesting or special happened.
Until dinner, that is.
Lily had been listening to Mary trying to teach Sirius and Peter how a telephone works when James had walked in holding hands with Regulus Black.
Lily's jaw dropped. 'No, this isn't real. He can't- He likes me!' Lily thought angrily and, if she had to admit it, jealousy. Lily turned her gaze to Sirius, who looked just as shocked as she was.
"What the actual fuck," Sirius said slowly, not taking his eyes of the pair that just walked in.
"I think your brother is dating Prongs," Remus said grinning.
"You knew- My baby brother and- No, stop this! It's not real!" Sirius looked at Remus with murder in his eyes.
"Yes, I knew. I walked in on them making out like two weeks ago. Not fun," Remus rolled his eyes and continued eating his food.
Lily didn't know how to react. She was so sure she had James around her finger, but apparently he had been around Regulus' instead.
She held her gaze on the pair as they walked a little further into the hall. Then something happened that made Sirius gag and Lily to finally look away, James kissed Regulus' cheek.
"JAMES FLEAMONT POTTER!" Sirius shouted at James. James ignored Sirius and said something to Regulus and kissed him on the other cheek as they parted ways to sit at their own house table.
James sat beside Marlene, as far away from Sirius as possible.
Sirius didn't say anything to James, but if looks could kill, James would be lying dead in Marlene's pizza.
It was tense around the table and it made Lily feel really uncomfortable and out of place, and she had just found out her crush's dating someone else, so she left the table and went up to her dorm without saying a word to anyone.
Lily walked fast up to Gryffindor tower, so fast she didn't realise she had walked into someone.
"Oh shit! I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there," Lily said, apologising to the other person.
"It's okay, most people don't," Lily looked down to see the face of the pale, white haired Ravenclaw, Pandora Rosier.
"Please don't say stuff like that. This is my fault, and by the way, if people don't see you, make them see you," Lily said quickly and continued her fast walk to her dorm.
When she reached her dorm she locked the door and slid down the wall right next to it, head in hands. 'Stupid, stupid, stupid,' She thought over and over again. Of course James didn't like her anymore. He had moved on just in time for Lily to actually like him back.
Lily hit her head against the wall and allowed the tears to come.
Her tears were streaming down her face, soundlessly, when she heard a knock on the door.
"Lily! Are you okay?" That voice belonged to Mary.
"Lily, unlock the door and let us in!" That was Marlen's voice.
Lily dried the tears away from her face and unlocked the door. Mary and Marlene attacked her with hugs and Lily felt the tears once more. This time she started sobbing and she didn't know how to stop the tears from spilling out.
The girls hugged each other tightly and for a while until Marlene broke the silence. "I can go down to the kitchens and get us some snacks," she offered.
"Yes, please," Lily sniffed.
Marlene was back with snacks in ten minutes.
"So, you wanna tell us what's wrong?" Mary asked.
"Yeah, you just kinda left in the middle of dinner," Marlene said, stroking Lily's hair.
The three girls were on the floor in the middle of their dorm, Lily's head was in Marlene's lap and she played with Lily's hair, trying to soothe her. It worked a little bit.
"You know James?"
"James Potter? No, never heard of him," Marlene said in a sarcastic tone.
"Marlene!" Mary sent Marlene a strict look. "What about James?"
"So, over the last few months I've kinda realised I like him. And now he's with Regulus and it's awful. I fully thought I had him. That I had him wrapped around my finger!" Lily said angrily and the tears started welling up in her eyes.
"Oh, Lily," Mary said affectionately and joined Marlene in stroking Lily's hair.
"I think that James is stupid for choosing Baby Black over you. You're way more fun than him," Marlene had never been the best at comforting people with her words, and it kinda showed.
"That's the whole fucking point! He didn't choose him over me. He didn't have a choice! He didn't have to choose someone over the other, because he doesn't know I like him!" Lily said, groaning frustrated.
"Well, he got over his crush on you, and who thought he would ever do that, and now he's with Baby Black! There had to be at least one time he had to choose in that timeline," Marlene did have a point, but it wasn't what Lily needed to hear in the state she was in now.
"You know what, Lily?" Mary said dedicatedly and stood up. "We're gonna get drunk and forget everything about boys and girls and drama. The only worry we should have is the fact that it's Thursday tomorrow and we're gonna be hungover in class."
"Mary, I don't think this is a good idea-" Lily started, but Mary put a finger to Lily's lips and continued.
"Yes, it is! Marlene! Do you know where we can get firewhiskey?"
"Of course, babe," Marlene said grinning. "Lily, I'll get up now so I can go get the firewhiskey. Please remove your head from my lap." Lily giggled a little bit before she did what she was told. Maybe getting drunk on a Wednesday wasn't too bad.
Marlene walked in with firewhiskey ten minutes later and the three of them got very pissed.
"But Lily, why do you even like him? He's so loud and obnoxious;" Marlene asked. It was around 11pm and all three of them were on the bathroom floor doing each other's nails. It was very messy, but they had fun.
"It can't have been his charm. If it was that you would've fallen for him a long time ago. And you, obviously, didn't," Mary held Lily's hand and put on some red nail polish, 'To match your hair', she had said.
"I honestly don't know myself," Lily answered, taking the bottle out of Marlene's grip with the hand Mary wasn't holding.
"I guess he's not too bad to look at," Mary said, finishing Lily's hand.
"And he's good at quidditch," Marlene stole the bottle from Lily and downed it in one gulp, "but you don't care about that."
"No, but it is kinda hot when he comes into the common room after a long training all sweaty and-"
"Ew, gross! I do not need to hear about that!" Mary interrupted her at the same time Marlene said offendedly: "Am I not hot enough for you, Evans?"
"Of course you're extremely hot Marlene, but there's something about him that I can't put my finger on," Lily said looking at something behind them with a dreamy look in her eyes.
"Now, I'll finish your other hand and then we're gonna go to bed and tomorrow none of our thoughts will be about boys or girls and just how we'll defeat the crucial hangover that's bound to come," Mary said and took Lily's other hand and dipped the brush in the nail polish.
"Yes, I'll even avoid Dorcas for you," Marlene declared dutifully as she started taking off her eyeliner.
"Don't do that, please. Dorcas will just be mad at me if you do that," Lily groaned. Angry Dorcas was not someone she was dealing with hungover.
"Fine, but can we atleast avoid James and the rest of the boys?"
"Not Remus, he knows I like James," then Lily realised something, "and he didn't tell me! He knew and he didn't tell me! That traitor!"
"So I guess we're avoiding him too?" Mary asked.
" Yes ," Lily said determinedly.
"Okay then," Mary said, finishing the nailpolish on Lily. "Now we're going to sleep, it's not too late and we're all, or probably just Marlene, gonna sleep through our first class," Marlene hit Mary on the arm, "but you'll get through this Lily. Just remember: James Potter is an asshole and he doesn't deserve you."
Lily pulled Mary and Marlene in for a group hug. "Thank you, I love you guys," Lily whispered.
"I'm tired and I'm going to sleep now. Night, babes!" Marlene yawned as she walked out of the bathroom and they could hear the sound of someone passing out on the bed closest to the bathroom. It was Lily's, but she didn't care. She was tired and didn't bother arguing with Marlene (who was probably already in deep sleep).
Lily and Mary took off their makeup in silence and went to bed in silence. Both too tired to talk and Lily was far too pissed at that point to think about staying up to do the potion essay she had due on Friday
But when Lily went to bed that night, she had one last clear thought before falling asleep. She would take revenge on Regulus Black for stealing James from her. And if there's one thing Lily knows, it's how to get revenge. There's nothing she does better than revenge.
