Work Text:

"I am bored."

The turquoise dragon sitting across from you complains. You're still not sure you understand the game on the board before you, or even how long you've been here. You've apparently been keeping up with her somehow, to a tied score through no metrics comprehensible to anyone but Dusk, but despite the apparently close competition, she repeat herself:

"I'm. Bored." This is the third game you've played with her today. She beat you handily in chess by turning all of her pawns to queens with a swipe of a brush, then lost in a record number of moves in Connect Four when you insisted on playing something that she couldn't cheat at. But still, apparently, this all bored her.

"Nian is fortunate that I even agreed to this. 'Enrichment' nothing, I'm bored"  The dragon's tail flicks powerfully across the floor behind her, and the cool autumn evening overlooking a lake outside her pavilion turns into a warm spring day with a vista of blossoming cherry trees stretching for miles around, petals falling in the cool breeze. Some blow into the pavilion, over the board, obscuring it briefly and taking it with them, bringing one more petal out with the breeze

Dusk huffs, tapping her chin with a mint-green finger and meeting your gaze with her cherry red eyes, somehow appearing more inquisitive than threatening despite her ever-present scowl. "You, however, are interesting. In our first bout of wits, you seemed disinterested and weren't engaged, despite the challenge. In our second, winning handily brought you no joy. Curious that your attention became so rapt when engaged with a game foreign to you. Even though the rules forbade me from divulging, you still managed to put up a formidable resistance, and that itself is more curious than any game we could play."

That tail flicks again, and you're back to autumn, once more, and the scenery briefly becomes a beach, then one more time, and the trees lay barren beneath several inches of snow, all without changing the ambient temperature. "I don't get you. I tire of these games, and grow no closer to understanding you mortals."

"Why not just give up ? You have no chance of winning , you don 't even know how to play ! Yet your interest only seems piqued by sheer happenstance ! Not challenge ! Not assured victory ! You just . Take interest in the strangest things . I don 't understand . " She pauses , leaning in . Her tail rises in a coil like a snake ready to strike "Is that just it , though ? That what intrigues you so is the mystery itself ? The lack of understanding ? Is what allowed you to win just now , our game of wills and drive , your determination to unravel its secrets ? "

There's another sharp huff of air as she straightens, pouring tea from a kettle that wasn't there before into a cup that you don't remember being present before. "Mayhap I do have a thing or two to learn from you. Nian was right. Mortals certainly are interesting~"

Notes:

Hi! This is my first published work on Ao3! I do a lot of indie writing, mostly for my partner or to get creative itches out of my system. This one's a bit short, but it came to me at like 3 AM thinking about how Dusk might get indirectly harassed by her sister.

Not tagging Nian because she's not present in this work, even if it is the result of one of her plans.

Any help navigating this site's tagging features is appreciated, and I thank you in advance for your feedback.
