Work Text:

Adora frantically searched the halls of Brightmoon Castle, using She-Ra to keep up with the incredible speed of her target. She had just turned a corner when she heard the scuttling and scraping of clawed feet stop. She looked around and focused on the sounds around her.

It’s no use, I should get Catra. She could hear-

Adora’s thought is interrupted by the unmistakable sound of a child’s sob. She sighed and looked up to find the source of the noise.

Of course, she thought, they went for a terrace.

Using a bit of She-Ra magic, Adora jumped and landed softly on the ledge under the giant windows of the hall. She de-transformed and sure enough, there was Finn, curled up in a ball and trying to mask their sobs.

Slowly, Adora sat across from them with her legs crossed. She leaned over and brushed a strand of Finn’s hair away from their face, causing them to look up.

When their eyes met, Adora could see the red edges and welling tears. Finn turned their head away swiftly.

“Finn, can you please tell me what’s wrong?” Adora sighed.

“You wouldn’t get it,” They mumbled into their knees.

“I escaped the Horde, became a Princess, and defeated an intergalactic warlord. I promise you, whatever it is, I can handle it.” Adora deadpanned. Finn exhaled heavily.

“I just- I’m scared for when you and Mama stop loving me”

Adora looked at them, eyes wide, and realized what had gone wrong.

She and Catra had been preparing their new 3-bedroom suite when Finn had left tutoring. They were in what would soon be the nursery when Finn stealthily peeked around the doorframe.

“Hello, darling,” Adora had cooed into Catra’s growing baby bump while Catra rolled her eyes. “I can’t wait for you to see the room Mama and I are getting ready for you. I already love you so much.”

“You know they can’t hear you, right dummy?” Catra scoffed, affection woven in with the insult.

“Says you,” Adora retorted. Catra laughed. Then, her ear flicked towards the door as she heard Finn dart off. The two shared a look of concern.

“I’ll go find them.”

Here, on a narrow ledge several feet off the ground and very brightly lit by the afternoon sun, Adora smiled, the kind of smile that held concern.

“Is this about the baby?”

FInn said nothing. Adora sighed.

“Finn, can you please look at me?” she asked, a pleading tone entering her voice.

Finn complied, one again meeting their Mom’s eyes. Adora reached out and cupped their cheek, which the young magicat leaned into. She ran a thumb across their collarbones before speaking.

“Why do you think we won’t love you anymore?” She asked.

Finn was silent for a moment. Then,

“‘Cuz you’ll have a real kid.” they whispered, their eyes squeezing shut against their tears. Adora couldn’t bear the pain contorting her child’s face, so she pulled them into her arms as they began to sob into her neck.

“Mama and I will never stop loving you. You’re our real child, just as much as the new baby will be. We’re not replacing you. We’re building on our beautiful, wonderful family.”

FInn’s sobs became lighter and they turned their head away from Adora’s neck to speak.

“But I’m just some kid you found on the street, the baby is actually yours,” they cried, gripping Adora’s blouse in their small hands as their ears flattened.

“Not just some kid , an amazing, perfect kid that the stars sent our way for us to love,” Adora contested. “Mama and I love you because you’re you, not because you’re our blood. Just like we love the baby because of who they’ll be.”

“You mean it?” Finn sniffled, pulling back from their Mom’s embrace.

“I mean it.” Adora promised.

Finn dove back in for a hug, clutching to Adora’s waist and burying their face in the crook of her neck. After a few moments, Adora spoke again.

“Let’s go find Mama, yeah?”

Finn nodded into her neck and Adora transformed once again to take her child back to where they could feel the love of both their moms.

Settled into their mom’s bed, sandwiched between the two as they laughed and reminisced, Finn began to wonder how they could have ever doubted their moms’ love. The warmth of their love filled their chest and they felt the need to voice it.

“I love you guys.”

Their moms replied in unison:

“I love you too.”
